As myself and several of my comrades on #FreeBSD/Undernet told you just 15 minutes ago, YES, it does run on a "PC" such as a Compaq Presario. That question and the rest of those are ALL answered on the FreeBSD website - http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/. I mean, then we need to update the handbook/faq on the double. Another aside, if you document CURRENT you are going to confuse people who follow STABLE. We don't want people to just start using CURRENT for the fun of it, it should be a concious choice. I think that the best way is to make a CURRENT/STABLE split of doc. I see no other easier way at this point. I would gladly hear ideas saying otherwise of course. >n Wed, Apr 21, 1999 at 11:36:35AM +0530, A Joseph Koshy wrote: >> Docbook has some features to handle versioning of text (using one of >> the common attributes of all the elements if I remember right). > >Do you mean the OS attribute? Just take a look at every commercial related Operating System out there. They all have handbooks and other documents which evidently describe only the version you just bought/acquired. Of course it may have something akin to a migration guide [which might be a good idea for us as well btw] but otherwise they don't document the different versions all in one document. Documenting -current is not the issue here. We are looking at ways to keep ONE set of documentation sources that could be used to generate OS release specific versions of processed documentation. This is primarily aimed at serving multiple -STABLE branches, and not -CURRENT, if I understood Nik correctly. Today, in those places where there was a change, our documentation is correct for either FreeBSD 2.X or 3.X, but not both. We currently don't have the infrastructure in place to handle text which is slightly different depending on the OS version. Think of tutorials that attempt to explain PPP setup, or e-mail configuration. Most (99%?) of the tutorial could be common to all FreeBSD releases, with a few version specific differences. asmodai> I think that the best way is to make a CURRENT/STABLE split of doc. This may not be a good idea, because: (a) In most cases the changes between the -STABLE-1 and -STABLE-2 will not be extensive (a few filenames will change etc). Branching the FDP source just because descriptions are slightly different is IMO overkill. (b) A lot of documentation is only loosely dependent on the exact OS version or branch. (c) Other side effects on the FDP build infrastructure (tracking content reorganizations or tool changes across multiple CVS branches, for example). nik> 3. Use parameter entities; [snip] asmodai> How does DocBook know where to get the appropriate OS version asmodai> from then? As part of the document build process, we would define the appropriate entities to be either "INCLUDE" or "IGNORE", (e.g:- from the command line). This technique as provides a simple (crude?) way to conditionally include portions of the document into the processing run. asmodai> Just take a look at every commercial related Operating System out [snip] asmodai> but otherwise they don't document the different versions asmodai> all in one document. True, the final product typically is about one version only but internally they could be using a common set of documentation sources to generate the version specific documentation. Why not ? Please take a look on src/libexec/rtld-aout/rtld.1. Pay special attention to first ".Nm" directive. It says that rtld(1) and ld.so(1) are same utils and, depends on my output "locate ld-elf.so", I sure that ELF variant of rtld.1 manpage (ld-elf.so.1) will be added into FreeBSD source tree. 2John Polstra: Am I right ? -- /* Alexey Zelkin && phantom@cris.net */ /* Tavric National University && phantom@crimea.edu */ /* http://www.ccssu.crimea.ua/~phantom && phantom@FreeBSD.org */ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Sep 27 6:46:30 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mtiwmhc02.worldnet.att.net (mtiwmhc02.worldnet.att.net [204.127.131.37]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EF74014D9F for ; Mon, 27 Sep 1999 06:46:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Thrumbar@Worldnet.att.net) Received: from 148.neworleans-15-20rs16rt.la.dial-access.att.net ([12.73.251.148]) by mtiwmhc02.worldnet.att.net (InterMail v03.02.07.07 118-134) with SMTP id <19990927134628.ISZM7282@148.neworleans-15-20rs16rt.la.dial-access.att.net> for ; Mon, 27 Sep 1999 13:46:28 +0000 From: Thrumbar Pathfinder To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 08:45:05 -0500 Organization: OmniCorp Interstellar Message-ID: X-Mailer: Forte Agent 1.6/32.525 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org auth 81d010b0 subscribe freebsd-doc Thrumbar@Worldnet.att.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Sep 27 11: 0:16 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.ORG [204.216.27.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8AA8514BE9 for ; Mon, 27 Sep 1999 11:00:10 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.9.3/8.9.2) id LAA68304 for freebsd-doc@freebsd.org; Mon, 27 Sep 1999 11:00:10 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 11:00:10 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199909271800.LAA68304@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. There's been more than one discussion about this in the mailing lists, a search of the web site should turn them up. I can't decide whether this is frightening or just silly. FreeBSD is an operating system. The idea that someone 'shouldn't' use itbecause they think a feature or two could be more simply implemented or more accessibly documented is absurd. It's also bad for FreeBSD, and it's antithetical to the notion of an open-source project. And is there anything more wrongheaded than a Unix freak saying "Well if you want something simple to use, then go back to Windows"? Simplicity is not a sign of lameness. LACK of simplicity is a sign of lameness, and laziness, and technical bigotry. And what's such an anti-FreeBSD-documentation sentiment doing on the FreeBSD documenation list, anyway? Sheesh. I'm not exactly sure if this is the correct address to send tidbit updates about the Handbook to, but you can probably send it on to whomever it should go to. I wanted to offer a little info for the tape drive section: Chapter 9, section 9.1, "Tape Media." 4mm DAT drives are now up to 24 GB capacity using the DDS-3 tape format. These tapes are around $25 each from HP. Exbyte now has the "Mammoth" model out, capable of puting up to 24 GB onto an 8mm tape. From what I've read, the Mammoth's cost roughly double what the standard 7/14 GB drives do, at about $3000. DLT tapes now come in up to 70 GB (with compression) capacity. the DLT 7000 drives from Quantum are capable of getting the most out of these DLT "Type IV" tapes. These tapes cost around $100 each, though. AIT, a new format from Sony, can hold up to 50 GB (with compression) per tape. The tapes cost about $100, but have memory chips on them to keep an index of the tape's contents. This index can be read quicly by a tape drive, instead of taking minutes, like an 8mm drive might, to read the TOC using tar or something similar that has to actually read the tape itself. Software such as SAMS:Alexandria can operate 40+ tape libraries of AIT tapes, communicating directly with the tape's memory chip to display the contents on screen, and to make it easy and relatively fast for users to scan a database of what's backed up into the library, switch to the tape needed, and then pull the data off. Libraries like this cost around $20,000. Hope this is useful. It is probably already well-known by some, but it could be nice to see it ni the handbook. Ideally, the one source text can contain information for any and all releases of FreeBSD. I don't want to be put in a position where we have to say "That's a great explanation of the kernel architecture, but it only applies to -current, and we're documenting -stable, sorry, can't accept it". We should have a way of building a -current version of the docs that only contains the common content + the -current content. Similarly, a way to build a -stable version, that contains common content and -stable content. Agreed. One of the reasons the docs are in their own repository hierarchy is so that we don't have a -stable/-current split. Nice - one nit, maybe we should leave indexing the handbook and FAQ, since (at least) I intend to set up an index of local documents separately (which would then link to your docindex.html). What do others think? Maybe you could index that instead later, when it appears, and keep your current indexing of handbook and FAQ. > Well, I've been quietly working away on this, and I'd like some opinions on > what I've done so far. Looks great, definite value-add. We will need to teach ports, pkg_add and pkg_create to use it properly - I'll handle it if you don't (I'm playing in there anyway). Are you saying that you are also planning to do an index of standard installed documentation, and we should limit the remit of my script to simply the documentation installed by the ports/packages system? >> Well, I've been quietly working away on this, and I'd like some opinions on >> what I've done so far. > > Looks great, definite value-add. I'm going to look at pkg_add and pkg_create, but I'm afraid I actually now little about the ports system except 'make', 'make install'! :-) It'll be a learning experience for me anyway, so I'll have a look around and see what I can find out. I remember a few months ago, when I tried to copy your tutorial one page at a time; however due to the speed (snail-speed) of the internet acount i'm using, i fail to down load everything i need. Unfortunately, the diskette where i transfered the files got corrupted. Since then i haven't got the time to copy the html pages once more. Anyway, that's my story... I was wondering if you have a FreeBSD COMPLETE tutorial (even in text format) that I could download in one piece. I'll highly appreciate it if you do and it will definitely help me a lot in learning FreeBSD. Looking forward for your response. Thank you and more power to continue your good work.
