I get a core dump: % ./ide zsh: segmentation fault ./ide A ktrace gives this: 792 ide CALL mkdir(0) 792 ide RET mkdir 0 792 ide CALL getpid 792 ide RET getpid 792/0x318 792 ide CALL getpid 792 ide RET getpid 792/0x318 792 ide CALL obs_vread(0xa,0xbfbfdb20 792 ide RET obs_vread 0 792 ide CALL obs_vread(0xc,0xbfbfdb14 792 ide RET obs_vread 0 792 ide CALL setreuid(0,0xbfbfdb50,0) 792 ide RET setreuid 0 792 ide PSIG SIGSEGV SIG_DFL 792 ide NAMI "ide.core" So I took a look at setreuid (which is not necessary anyway - why not run with the standard ids?). So I wrote this: main() { setreuid(-1, -1); } Runs fine as a BSD binary. I compile it under linux, though, and this happens: % ./lx zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) ./lx Does it look familiar? Looks like the Visual Age problem. And I assume it is a bug, yes? My system looks like this: %uname FreeBSD 3.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 3.3-RELEASE #0: Thu Sep 16 23:40:35 GMT 1999 jkh@highwing.cdrom.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC i386 % kldstat Id Refs Address Size Name 1 6 0xc0100000 277038 kernel 2 1 0xc0a32000 4000 kernfs.ko 3 2 0xc0a4d000 a000 ibcs2.ko 4 1 0xc0a5b000 3000 ibcs2_coff.ko 5 1 0xc0a61000 e000 linux.ko 5 1 0xc0a61000 e000 linux.ko Tail end of kldstat -v: Contains modules: Id Name 20 linuxelf 21 linuxaout So, is this a known problem? If so, let me know how to fix it. If not, can someone give me some help in solving this - I have starting playing around with .ko files, and want to write one to override the setreuid call for linux so that it does nothing. I have just compiled my fist .ko file, and successfully loaded it (the helloworld example). Now, this got loaded at 210, and seems to work fine. Is there I can load this at 70, so that it removes setreuid functionaility? Would I do that by changing NO_SYSCALL in the helloworld example? But of course this is the wrong approach - I really want to override the linux setreuid, don't I. But that is currently mapped to BSD setreuid(). So, how do I override the linux setreuid(), but not the BSD version? Any help much appreciated - and I'll gladly put in time to help improve the emulation - hey, you help me solve the kernel problems, and I'll make a port for the IBM program, OK? The first two can be handled by the linux_base port in the ports collection. The glibc2.1 libraries are in the linux_base port I have in my home-directory (http://www.freebsd.org/~marcel) which I probably need to update to 6.1 anyway :-) > syscall linux_rt_sigaction(0xa,0xbfbfd9a4,0xbfbfd918,0x8) > returns 0 (0x0) > SIGNAL 20 This signal is being catched and simply means that a child has finished. I suggest you use ktrace(1) and linux_kdump (from the ports collection) to see why the child has finished and which child it is. For example: ktrace -i -t usinc ./ide When ktrace finishes, create a readable trace with: linux_kdump -f ktrace.out > kdump.out And start reading kdump.out :-) HTH, -- Marcel Moolenaar mailto:marcel@scc.nl SCC Internetworking & Databases http://www.scc.nl/ The FreeBSD project mailto:marcel@FreeBSD.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Fri Dec 3 11:38:39 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from abc.aaa-mainstreet.nl (abc.aaa-mainstreet.nl [195.64.77.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id E97F014A14 for ; Fri, 3 Dec 1999 11:38:35 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gary@aaa-mainstreet.nl) Received: (qmail 23075 invoked by uid 666); 3 Dec 1999 19:38:59 -0000 Date: 3 Dec 1999 19:38:59 -0000 Message-ID: <19991203193859.23074.qmail@abc.aaa-mainstreet.nl> From: gary@aaa-mainstreet.nl To: emulation@freebsd.org Subject: VA for Java (linux under BSD) Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org OK, The story so far. I can run X programs from linux machines. But can't run VA for Java from IBM. I've done a ktrace, this time tracing children, since the previous problem was do to a signal from a child. I get lots of output. One suspiscous bit of output looks like this: 9540 ide CALL linux_pipe(0xbfbfd704) 9540 ide RET linux_pipe 0 9540 ide CALL linux_clone(0xf00,0x83088a8) 9540 ide RET linux_clone 9543/0x2547 9540 ide CALL write(0x27,0xbfbfd78c,0x94) 9540 ide GIO fd 39 wrote 148 bytes 9540 ide RET write 148/0x94 9540 ide CALL linux_rt_sigprocmask(0x2,0,0xbfbfd8c4,0x8) 9540 ide RET linux_rt_sigprocmask 0 9540 ide CALL write(0x27,0xbfbfd8b0,0x94) 9540 ide GIO fd 39 wrote 148 bytes 9540 ide RET write 148/0x94 9540 ide CALL linux_rt_sigprocmask(0x2,0,0xbfbfd830,0x8) 9540 ide RET linux_rt_sigprocmask 0 9540 ide CALL #179 9540 ide PSIG SIGSYS SIG_DFL 9540 ide NAMI "ide.core" What is this linux_clone() business? Could the program be detecting that it is not running under linux and bombing out? Process 9540 is one of the ones dumping core. In this case, the other process was 9544, and a grep of 9544 on the linux_kdump output gives: 9543 ide RET linux_clone 9544/0x2548 9544 ide RET linux_fork 0 9544 ide CALL getpid 9544 ide RET getpid 9544/0x2548 9544 ide CALL linux_rt_sigprocmask(0x2,0xbf3ffedc,0,0x8) 9544 ide RET linux_rt_sigprocmask 0 9544 ide CALL linux_rt_sigaction(0x1d,0xbf3ff9a4,0,0x8) 9544 ide RET linux_rt_sigaction 0 9544 ide CALL linux_rt_sigprocmask(0,0,0xbf3ffba8,0x8) 9544 ide RET linux_rt_sigprocmask 0 9544 ide CALL #179 9544 ide PSIG SIGSYS SIG_DFL 9544 ide NAMI "ide.core" Other questions: Is the linux /proc filesystem implemented correctly under FreeBSD? Why can't I find any 'exec's in the kdump output - is this program just forking and not exec'ing? (quite possible I assume, I just wanted to check that execs don't appear as something else in kdump output). Any suggestions on where to look now, given the above snippets? I *must* run VA for Java for my work, and if I can't I have to install linux :-( Gary To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Fri Dec 3 12: 6:44 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from dan.emsphone.com (dan.emsphone.com [199.67.51.101]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4A12C14FF9 for ; Fri, 3 Dec 1999 12:06:41 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dan@dan.emsphone.com) Received: (from dan@localhost) by dan.emsphone.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id OAA46870; Fri, 3 Dec 1999 14:05:51 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from dan) Date: Fri, 3 Dec 1999 14:05:51 -0600 From: Dan Nelson To: gary@aaa-mainstreet.nl Cc: emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: VA for Java (linux under BSD) Message-ID: <19991203140551.A46341@dan.emsphone.com> References: <19991203193859.23074.qmail@abc.aaa-mainstreet.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0i In-Reply-To: <19991203193859.23074.qmail@abc.aaa-mainstreet.nl>; from "gary@aaa-mainstreet.nl" on Fri Dec 3 19:38:59 GMT 1999 X-OS: FreeBSD 4.0-CURRENT Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org In the last episode (Dec 03), gary@aaa-mainstreet.nl said: > I get lots of output. I solve the problem with new ATA driver. It's has two points. 1. Before open the raw device vmware validated his name. As say my investigation, a name /dev/wdx vmware like. but name /dev/adx don't like. 2. After you were created the raw device in vmware configuration panel, you _can't_ change the name of raw device, even if you entered new name, and will be edit partition list, the name of raw device stay the same. Solutions. 1. Even if you are use new ATA driver enter /dev/wdX device name. VMware also doesn't like character device such as /dev/rwdx or /dev/radx. 2. If you already have raw disk configured with name other than /dev/wdX, try to create new raw device, or manually in the first line of raw device configuration file change the device name. -- Vladimir Silyaev. Right now Debian linux is working within this configuration. > > > Next one dumb question. Did you have unmounted the cdrom drive when you > > are run vmware? It's not so important, I had mounted cdrom in FreeBSD and at the same time mount cdrom and read files from it in the linux session. -- Vladimir Silyaev. I have the linux_base-6.0 port installed and the linux.ko > module installed. I can run linux's ls by copying it onto a freebsd > partition, but it panicked on ext2fs. I've been trying to investigate this further, but unfortunately, I've been unable to get a kernel dump (see below). I've produced several panics, but when it crashes, I don't get the usual "Auto reboot in 15 seconds" message. Instead, I get several panic messages which fly off the console. Then it freezes and I can only read the last message. The instruction pointers are mostly very low, 0x8:350, or very high, 0x8:c45b1153 (with a stack pointer 0x10:0xc45b1234). I'm guessing that it panics, tries to dump core and panics again with a less useful message. One time it panicked just once, printed just one message and gave the the "Auto reboot in 15 seconds" message. This was my first test, before I had dumpon turned on. It had a more useful instruction pointer: 0x8:0xc01f1916. Looking through the kernel name list: % nm kernel | sort c0116c40 T btext c0116c96 t begin ... c01f1850 T generic_bzero c01f186c T i686_pagezero c01f18ac T fillw c01f18c0 T bcopyb c01f18ec T bcopy c01f18f4 T ovbcopy c01f18fc T generic_bcopy c01f1944 T memcpy c01f1968 T copyout c01f1970 T generic_copyout c01f19ae t done_copyout c01f19c0 t copyout_fault c01f19dc T copyin c01f19e4 T generic_copyin c01f1a30 t copyin_fault ... c02527ec B vga_sub_configure c02527f0 B swbuf c02527f4 A _end c02527f4 A end So, maybe generic_bcopy? I'm sorry I don't have more to report. Anything else I should try? Now, on to why I can't get a kernel dump. I have dumpon turned on in /etc/rc.conf.local: dumpdev="/dev/da0b" And sysctl reports that it is turned on: % sysctl -a | grep -i dump kern.dumpdev: { major = 4, minor = 1 } kern.sugid_coredump: 0 machdep.do_dump: 1 Memory is 64 Meg, swap is 160 Meg, minfree is 2048. /var has 75 Meg free, so that should be enough. The swap partition, /dev/da0s2b, is also used as MFS for /tmp. But I'm not getting a kernel dump. On reboot, savecore just reports "no crash dump." When it panics, the disk and scsi controller are quiet, so it must not be writing out the dump. Am I missing a step? Or is the panic so bad that it can't dump core? Any suggestions on how to get a dump, or what to try without one? P.S. I didn't understand this comment in the man page for dumpon under BUGS: "Dumpon currently allows only devices with minor number 1 to be used as dump devices." In /dev: brw-r----- 1 root operator 4, 1 Nov 7 19:14 /dev/da0b brw-r----- 1 root operator 4, 0x00030001 Jul 1 18:51 /dev/da0s2b Does it matter if I set dumpdev to /dev/da0b or /dev/da0s2b? Is minor number 0x00030001 close enough to 1 for dumps? I tried both and neither worked. --Mark Krentel To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message
