Alternatively, you can download the PAO tarball and add PAO to an existing install. It unpacks into a source directory and has patches for the system kernel. You need to have the sources to the kernel available and you need to rebuild the kernel as well as the PAO utilities. The instructions in the PAO/release dir are very straightforward. Be sure to get the PAO release for your version of FreeBSD. There is a version for 2.2.7 on the ftp site still, I believe. 2.2.8 is on the web page. 3.0 is unnecessary (?). Cheers, -Oly "Eric I. I seem to have two problems: First, if I compile PCIC support into the kernel and enable PCCARD support in /etc/rc.conf, I end up with a system where the kernel has PCIC support AND I load the PCIC kernel modules at boot time. Both modules seem to detect my PCMCIA controller just fine, except only the loaded module seems to work. It detects cards in slots 2 and 3. Slots 0 and 1 are apparently allocated to the built in kernel driver. If I compile a kernel without PCIC support, the module load fails at boot time (Invalid exec format). On to the second problem. If I decide to ignore the fact that freebsd thinks my laptop has 4 PCMCIA slots and that only slots 2 and 3 work, I can start pccardd. pccardd tends to be unhappy because my PCMCIA ether card uses the ep driver, which I have compiled into the kernel. For some reason, neither it nor the sio driver are detected at boot time as valid PCMCIA drivers (not that I care about the sio driver). The ed driver is detected fine, but I have no need for that driver...*sigh*. So, any ideas? I had this all working a month ago... -Matt To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu Feb 11 05:52:53 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id FAA18232 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Thu, 11 Feb 1999 05:52:53 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from scotty.masternet.it (scotty.masternet.it [194.184.65.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id FAA18213 for ; Thu, 11 Feb 1999 05:52:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gmarco@scotty.masternet.it) Received: from suzy (modem02.masternet.it [194.184.65.12]) by scotty.masternet.it (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id OAA04403; Thu, 11 Feb 1999 14:51:51 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from gmarco@scotty.masternet.it) Message-Id: <4.1.19990211145825.0097c100@194.184.65.4> X-Sender: gmarco@scotty.masternet.it X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.1 Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 15:00:14 +0100 To: Michael Robinson From: Gianmarco Giovannelli Subject: Re: PCMCIA Question: Toshiba PDR-2 Digital Camera Cc: mobile@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <199902090224.KAA00414@netrinsics.com> References: <3.0.3.32.19990208124746.00e43f08@207.86.113.200> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >PAO supports wdc, but FreeBSD 3.0 doesn't. It's more than one year I am asking here and there in the hope of seeing it, but till now I only see a lot of patches arise to fill the lack of an "official solution". It's a pity that our mobile support is soo weak in a so growing device market ? Compact flash are now everywhere, from Digital Camera, to Palmtop passing from mp3 player (like Rio). The last time I ask why noone commits the patches it was told to me two groups (PAO and -current developers) were trying to find an arrangement on how proceeded the development (obviusly they don't agree each other :-) and so time passes ... So in the meantime why not "promote" one of this unofficial patches that usually live till the next cvsup in the official tree (in 4.0 obviusly) ? I don't think they can break anything of important and perhaps in this way they can updated and supported from others. Any comments ? Odd. My Libretto 50CT works great with 4.0 -current as of a few weeks ago. apm and zzz both work w/o a hitch. What's the stack traceback on the kernel panic message? Can you enable DDB in your config file? : Before moving to 4.0-CURRENT my notebook run 2.2.8 wit PAO w/o problems. : Also now shutdown -p (PAO's -x opt) is not working too. Works for me. Well, I should say that halt -p works for me. I've never used shutdown on my libretto. The only time I've had it fail was when I had a bogus patch to the halt code... : So, incorporating PAO into 4.0 will be good , I think. This does not follow from what you have reported. Much of PAO has been incorporated into -current a long time ago (like months before 3.0 was released), although Nate has rewritten much of it to more closely conform to FreeBSD's goals and to cleanup the code. Much work of integration does need to be done. It isn't a binary either/or sort of thing either, since PAO and FreeBSD have different goals, standards, etc. Parts of PAO will likely continue to make their way into the base FreeBSD distribution. A big problem that I have with integrating more of their stuff is that I don't have all the hardware that is supported by PAO, so I can't test/play with it before putting it into -current/-stable. BTW, what laptop are you running? Look in the FreeBSD mail archives for libretto and floppy. This will lead you to David Horwitt's patches to 2.2.8ish which I used when I integrated it into then 3.0-current. Since I don't have any 2.2.x machines, I didn't commit his patches to that branch. I don't think that PAO supports this device in 2.2.8, but I could be wrong.
