Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi! I was contacted to project the link of a medium business office to an other independent office and to the InterNet. The options that I know to exist in the market are based on Cisco routers. I need a Serial(syncronous) link to the other office (this link is permanent), and the link to the Internet is based on dial-on-demand ISDN link. This two links must have independent trafic. The other office must not connect to the Net using the "our side" ISDN link I think this is "simple" using the apropriate rules of routing/firewalling! The question is? Is this possible using a *BSD router? If so, what hardware do I need? Can I use ipf as my firewall software? The serial link is my problem since I don't have this type of link at home! X-Mailer: VM 6.75 under Emacs 20.3.1 From: jan@sparud.net (Jan Sparud) Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org (Sorry for the length of this mail) I think I have found the reason for the LCP loop bug that some people, including me, have painfully experienced. I had heard that the bug wasn't in 0.71 so I took a stab at trying to get the sppp files in 0.71 (sppp/if_sppp.h, sppp/if_spppsubr.c and driver/i4b_isppp.c) to work in 0.90. That went smoothly, and sure enough, the LCP loop bug was refreshingly non-existent. I looked at the diffs between 0.71 and 0.90 but couldn't find anything that looked very suspicious. So I started by included about half the diffs, recompiled and tried again. Didn't work. Removed more parts of the diffs, and tried again. After spending half a day doing this diff-diff binary search I finally found out the one thing that made the difference. *** if_spppsubr.c Sat Jan 8 13:28:48 2000 --- if_spppsubr.c.15 Sat Jan 8 13:20:54 2000 *************** *** 1822,1835 **** sp->lcp.protos = 0; sp->lcp.mru = sp->lcp.their_mru = PP_MTU; ! /* ! * Initialize counters and timeout values. The comment refers to the following section in RFC 1661: 4.6. Counters and Timers Restart Timer There is one special timer used by the automaton. The Restart timer is used to time transmissions of Configure-Request and Terminate-Request packets. Expiration of the Restart timer causes a Timeout event, and retransmission of the corresponding Configure-Request or Terminate-Request packet. The Restart timer MUST be configurable, but SHOULD default to three (3) seconds. Implementation Note: The Restart timer SHOULD be based on the speed of the link. The default value is designed for low speed (2,400 to 9,600 bps), high switching latency links (typical telephone lines). Higher speed links, or links with low switching latency, SHOULD have correspondingly faster retransmission times. Instead of a constant value, the Restart timer MAY begin at an initial small value and increase to the configured final value. Each successive value less than the final value SHOULD be at least twice the previous value. The initial value SHOULD be large enough to account for the size of the packets, twice the round trip time for transmission at the link speed, and at least an additional 100 milliseconds to allow the peer to process the packets before responding. Some circuits add another 200 milliseconds of satellite delay. Round trip times for modems operating at 14,400 bps have been measured in the range of 160 to more than 600 milliseconds. I don't know why it doesn't work at all with the default timeout (3s). However, the RFC says that the timeout must be configurable, and that the default is for slow modems with high switching latency links, and that higher speed links should have correspondingly faster retransmission times. I have tried with a few different values: between 0.1 secs and around 2.1 secs it works, but with the higher values an additional pause, with the same length as the timeout, slows down the connection. With higher values than 2.1 secs it doesn't work at all (it loops). So in my setup I now use a timeout of 0.1 secs, which gives me a total connect time of about 0.8 secs. I have modified the ioctl routines in if_spppsubr.c to accept setting the lcp timeout value. I modified sppp_params to accept setting values when the interface is in state ESTABLISH too (i.e., not just in DEAD phase). I also modified spppcontrol to accept a new option "lcp-timeout" that takes an integer as argument, which is the new timeout value in milliseconds. Spppcontrol now also displays the current setting of the timeout value. Diffs are included below. When the remote site dials me and tries to connect, I can now change the timeout value instantaneously. The following tcpdump output shows a session when the timeout value is initially 3 s (the default value). After having looped for a while, I changed the timeout (using spppcontrol) to 0.1 s. While I'm at it: your question doesn't really belong on -stable (nor on -isdn I think). -- Bart To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Sun Jan 9 13: 2:17 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from eh.est.is (eh.est.is [194.144.208.34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8F7B215B64 for ; Sun, 9 Jan 2000 13:01:47 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from totii@est.is) Received: from toti.est.is (toti-mx.est.is [194.144.208.17]) by eh.est.is (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id VAA13072; Sun, 9 Jan 2000 21:01:35 GMT (envelope-from totii@est.is) Received: from est.is (asus.est.is [194.144.208.242]) by toti.est.is (8.9.3/8.9.1) with ESMTP id VAA79726; Sun, 9 Jan 2000 21:01:32 GMT (envelope-from totii@est.is) Message-ID: <3878F14A.CC974B@est.is> Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2000 20:36:26 +0000 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?=DE=F3r=F0ur=20=CDvarsson?= Reply-To: thivars@est.is X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: David Wetzel Cc: ISDN-List Subject: Re: Cisco Loop-bug? I know it is not related to I4B but it is related to "Cisco". User dials in via Cisco 2500 router to my Zyxel/Livingston dial in pool, and gets into some Connect/login/username/nothing? state. Cheers!! Thanks alot! I tried the diffs, and they got me going (Well almost - I had to play with the lcp-timeout, but your patch to spppcontrol was very very useful). Well, now that I'm passed the lcp part, I'm in the ipcp part :b. I can't really check if my connection is working, because I need some IP to ping, and I don't have my DNS servers, so I can't check domains. I'll check that later. But anyways, after the lcp part passes painlessly (thanks to Jan here), I get around 10 ipcp messages per sec with the debug option set on for isp0... tcpdump shows this message: 14:45:50.012088 ID-162 IPCP: IP-Address=10.10.10.10 03a2 000a 0306 0a0a 0a0a Now, I configures isp0 this way: ifconfig isp0 inet 0.0.0.0 10.10.10.10 mtu 500 netmask 255.255.255.0 So 10.10.10.10 is the address I gave to my ISP. After I pass the LCP part, spppcontrol isp0 shows I am in the "network" stage, and ifconfig isp0 shows "inet (my newly assigned IP) -> 10.10.10.10". Should I have known by this time my ISP's IP too? I have 0.0.0.1 instead of 10.10.10.10 ("man sppp" says to use 0.0.0.1 as a magic address to use when one doesn't know the ISP's address). Also, you have to set the default route to point to the ISP. In NetBSD you do "route add default 0.0.0.1". I guess it's something similar in FreeBSD. /Janne To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Mon Jan 10 6: 1:19 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from mail-in-02.piro.net (mail-out-01.piro.net [194.64.31.11]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6464B15007 for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2000 06:01:15 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from pherman@piro.net) Received: from pums01.piro.net (pums01.piro.net [194.64.31.19]) by mail-in-02.piro.net (8.9.3/8.9.3/PN-991208) with ESMTP id PAA06909 for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2000 15:01:13 +0100 Received: from xhost.piro.net ([195.135.190.64]) by pums01.piro.net (Netscape Messaging Server 3.6) with ESMTP id AAA6C5D; Mon, 10 Jan 2000 15:01:12 +0100 Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 15:01:11 +0100 (CET) From: Paul Herman To: Oren Sarig Cc: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Subject: Re: LCP loop problem fixed In-Reply-To: <000a01bf5b70$a3183280$0a4119d4@asmodean> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi Oren, On Mon, 10 Jan 2000, Oren Sarig wrote: > Well, I figured I might add the debug output I got, so here it > follows. I don't know if you've tried this yet, but if you are getting dynamic IPs use 0.0.0.1 instead of 10.10.10.10 for his address. Sometimes the other end is OK with rejecting addresses like this, and sometimes not. 0.0.0.1 is "supposed" to work always. Just to keep you alerted: My patch is a workaround, not a solution. Like "kicking the TV", violating the PPP protocol. It might probably break the system for ppp over other media, but is ok for us users who simply want to connect to a internet provider until the real issue gets fixed. Because of its fishy nature I don't know how to sell this change to the send-pr database. Maybe as "PPP_RELAXED_PROTOCOL" option in the kernel config? I'm using -current where the timeout is set to 3*hz and I've *never* experienced a problem using sppp to my ISP. [lots snipped] This is great stuff and I'm glad you took the time to find and fix the (apparent) bug. I only have one comment - where you define HZ as 100. This information can be obtained from the kernel using sysctl. There's a good example in /usr/src/lib/libc/gmon/gmon.c where clockinfo is used. It would be nice to get this into the CVS tree, but I'm not sure that will be possible :( --- Gary Jennejohn / garyj@muc.de garyj@fkr.cpqcorp.net gj@freebsd.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Mon Jan 10 17:39:27 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from awfulhak.org (dynamic-112.max4-du-ws.dialnetwork.pavilion.co.uk [212.74.9.240]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B80A6153E0 for ; Mon, 10 Jan 2000 17:39:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from brian@Awfulhak.org) Received: from hak.lan.Awfulhak.org (root@hak.lan.Awfulhak.org [172.16.0.12]) by awfulhak.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id BAA28418; Tue, 11 Jan 2000 01:15:03 GMT (envelope-from brian@lan.awfulhak.org) Received: from hak.lan.Awfulhak.org (brian@localhost.lan.Awfulhak.org [127.0.0.1]) by hak.lan.Awfulhak.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id BAA07184; Tue, 11 Jan 2000 01:19:04 GMT (envelope-from brian@hak.lan.Awfulhak.org) Message-Id: <200001110119.BAA07184@hak.lan.Awfulhak.org> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.1.0 09/18/1999 To: Martin Welk Cc: Christoph Kukulies , freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG, brian@hak.lan.Awfulhak.org Subject: Re: one slight glitch in i4bispp In-Reply-To: Message from Martin Welk of "Fri, 07 Jan 2000 07:20:31 +0100." <20000107072031.F2765@theatre.sax.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 01:19:03 +0000 From: Brian Somers Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > On Thu, Jan 06, 2000 at 03:46:06PM +0100, Christoph Kukulies wrote: > > > Well, "Ich bin drin - ja", but when I connect for instance over isp0 > > once and i4b times out, the session isn't awoken again when I > > type something in the respective xterm (or vty). > > > > Opening a fresh session in another xterm (vty) works fine. > > > > It looks to me like the old connection doesn't get informed about the > > new routes. I knew about getting hz in NetBSD (via sysctl), but after looking at the tons of code in the ntp source to get hz, I thought that was no portable way of getting it, and since I didn't know if this was of any use to anyone else I chose the least portable way of all ;-) If this goes into the tree, that must obviously change, therefore the comment on the preceding line. Here goes anyway: a friend of mine has two PCs with ISDN cards (1 Fritz PCI, the other Fritz ISA) connected to a private exchange (TK Anlage here in Germany) "Telenet". When he has one machine on and surfs and then turns the other machine on, he immediately loses the connection on the first PC. This is *NOT* under i4b!! I know it´s off-topic, but he asked me whether it *should* work or not and as far as I understand things, it definitely should. When he plugs both PCs into the NT (ie. NTBA here in Germany) both work OK. It´s just the TK exchange that mucks things up. *Theoretically*, the setup should work ok, or have I misunderstood something? No, well not if the initial telnet packet caused the ``ppp -nat'' process to dial. Because it decides based on the unNATd packet, it brings the link up and then (after IPCP has agreed another IP number) sends the packet through the NAT engine. telnet.domain.com only ever sees packets from the new IP number whereas the telnet process is bound to the old IP number. > Regards, > Marc. > > > -- > ---------------------------------------------------- > Marc van Kempen BowTie Technology > Email: marc@bowtie.nl WWW & Databases > tel. +31 40 2 43 20 65 > fax. +31 40 2 44 21 86 http://www.bowtie.nl > ---------------------------------------------------- -- Brian Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour ! Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Well, I'm still suffering from the loss of quality I'm experiencing since the fixed IP address solution at our campus is down. (BTW, Marc or Brian I believe were asking in a previous mail about ascend max and using a fixed address pool by shifting the range of the dynamically assigned addresses - I suggested this to the admins in the campus computing center as well and they refused because they were using RADIUS to maintain the 18,000 users and it was not possible for administrative overhead reasons). When logging in over the fixed IP address solution I automatically set PRINTER= depending on the source from where I was logging in so that I always could say lpr file... Now, since my address changes dynamically, I'm thinking of a way to establish a default printer dynamically. Anyone knowing a recipe for this? -- Chris Christoph P. U. I think I can actually help developing the driver as long as I won't have to take the lead for now. How do we get this ball rollin'? I'll be looking forward to hearing from you. And I guess you can use userland PPP also with only one channel but with the improved functionality, although I'm not sure how it can really work, but that's another problem :-) Regards, Martin -- /| /| | /| / ,,You know, there's a lot of opportunities, / |/ | artin |/ |/ elk if you're knowing to take them, you know, there's a lot of opportunities, Freiberg/Saxony, Germany if there aren't you can make them, mw@sax.de / mw@theatre.sax.de make or break them!'' Sure, rc.local would probably be the place for that *but* I'm using an I4BTel answering machine which at some point executes metasend to mail me the recorded message. Meta- send does not work when isdnd (as the parent process) is started from there. Metasend simply does nothing. My guess is that some Environ- ment variable (e.g. mailer or whatever) is not defined at the point isdnd is launched and thus won't work. I have to start isdnd manually to make my answering machine behave correctly. Anyone has ideas on where to start isdnd so that it gets called with the correct environment? Thank you!
