VTK is a scientiic vizalization tool. Demands there are not necessarily the same as for computer games. And game playing is the driving force behind present consumer cards. It could be original Laser Disc format. Most people have the 12 inch (30cm) Laser Disk movies but you could also get short videos on CD sized disks with a mix of Laser Disc Video and Music tracks. My friend has one of these by a UK band called "The Mission" It is a CD sized disk, 3 music tracks and a Laser Disc Video CD track. Laser Discs store uncompressed video. MPEG was not even invented whem Laser Discs went into production. So, the only way to get the video is a Laser Disc player. I do not know of any way to use a CD ROM drive to play Laser Discs. So, me and my friend have never seen the video on his Mission CD. There are three parts to this 1) identifying the hardware 2) installing the hardware 3) creating a new kernel 1) exactly what make and model sound card do you have. Is it a real sound blaster, or a 'sound blaster compatible card' 2) Does the card have jumpers to set the IO address and the IRQ, or is this a plug a play card. Make a note of any IRQ and IO address (base address) settings 3) once you have these details, you can make a new kerel. Have you made a new kernel before? If you tell me more about your hardware, I'll advice on that to put in your kernel settings. That's not "strange", but pretty standard. You can mix audio tracks with other tracks on a single CD. For example, Moby's ``Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?'' maxi CD contains three audio tracks and an ISO9660 track that contains a Quicktime video file (unfortunately in a format that cannot be played under FreeBSD or converted to some- thing usable). It's also perfectly possible that there are audio tracks and video tracks (standard VCD format) on a single CD. Example: Matrox card's have a very nice driver for 3.3.x that can't be just plugged into XF 4.x without modification. So far I have not heard someone putting the hw driver into the new architecture. (A question to the utah glx list could clearify that) > > And game playing is the driving force behind present consumer cards. > > Very true and very sad. BTW: seems to > address the same audience. *} Uhm, I am the culprit for that page. :-) The actual focus on games is due to time restrictions on my part. Games are the most catchy demos for a general audience. We have such a good Linux emulation and the differences under the hood of XFree86 are not that distant. I really hated it that Linux was perceived as that great gaming/multimedia platform and FreeBSD not. So it was a must to crank out some demos quickly that show that if it runs under Linux it will run under FreeBSD with few modifications too. BTW I was very happy to read the recent Loki/BSDI press release that supports my opinion. The 3d page is far away from the 3d portal I hoped to realize there. I sit on a huge pile of half finished ideas, links and snippets I never found time to put up there. It is also a bit problematic that I have only access to nvidia cards. So I depend on feedback from Matrox, 3dfx etc users. And that feedback is rare. On the other hand it was better than nothing. Last year it was a rather esoteric topic among BSD users, now many people seem to poke at that stuff. I hope the situation will improve now as hobby and job align again. I need to do a lot of 3d vizualization of DNA and protein structures under the XFree86/nvidia combo in the near future, so I am likely to be challenged by the same problems like you do. (The VTK 2nd edition manual lies here on my desk too.. :) If you have some 3d related information that you want to publish on that web page I will integrate it. Serious stuff is as welcome, as fun one. After all most BSD users know that BSD is a superb working horse for serious tasks. What needs a bit of propaganda is that it is also a nice multimedia system. > Well, the question stands whether a GeForce would give recognizably > more than the current TNT2. Yes, like Randall suggested, it is possibly a Laser Disk track, because these two CDs are quite old (~10 years). I doubt that the firmware in my SCSI CD-RW or SCSI DVD drive will allow me to read it. On the other hand I have on CD Extra disc by Xavier Naidoo, that has a second session in CD-ROM format that contains some video file in its file system (Quicktime or mpeg, can't remember). It certainly can't do that, because LaserDisc is not covered by Red Book. It's not even digital data. LaserDisc video is analogue. You definitely need a real LaserDisc player for this. Those were analog. The "Laser Discs" that just look like large 12" CD's are indeed fully digital, both audio and video. Laser Discs are still big in the education area because they are used to hold a humungous number of easily accessable still pictures (when used with a special Laser Disc player with bar-code reader and barcoded image index), video clips (of course), and other neat interactive stuff. -- Chris Dillon - cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us - cdillon@inter-linc.net FreeBSD: The fastest and most stable server OS on the planet. I have in my kernel config: device pcm device gusc0 at isa? port 0x240 irq 11 drq5 flags 0x0 since this card is a non-PnP card. I reserved these settings in the BIOS for ISA (PnP OS is turned off, but turning it on didn't make a difference). Also, I installed the card in DOS and verified that it works using these settings. When I boot in FreeBSD with boot -c, the gusc0 device is listed with the correct settings, no conflict. However, there is no message anymore during startup that shows that pcm is recognizing the card, and consequently the card cannot be accessed. A SB16 card works perfectly in this machine with pcm, and for a long time I had both this SB16 and a PCI128 working with pcm - no problem at all. Any idea how to get the good old Gravis going?? Thanks, Karel.
