When sysinstall was extracting the bin distribution (both from CD and via FTP), it would hang rather than tell you that the file was missing. This took several attempts to debug correctly. Adding the file solved the problem. I have not tested this against prior versions. Some validation by others might be nice to make sure I'm not in the twilight zone. -Brian To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-qa" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-qa Mon Nov 6 12:33:49 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org Received: from smtp1.sentex.ca (smtp1.sentex.ca [199.212.134.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6170637B4E5 for ; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 12:33:47 -0800 (PST) Received: from simoeon.sentex.net (simeon.sentex.ca [209.112.4.47]) by smtp1.sentex.ca (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id eA6KXf061879 for ; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 15:33:41 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <5.0.0.25.0.20001106152638.08148e40@marble.sentex.ca> X-Sender: mdtpop@marble.sentex.ca X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.0 Date: Mon, 06 Nov 2000 15:27:17 -0500 To: qa@FreeBSD.ORG From: Mike Tancsa Subject: ISO Snapshots ? I am just a lowly admin I assure you :-) However, I do have time this week to install any ISO snaps on 3 machines I am sending out to customers, including 2 different RAID cards (mylex as well as 3ware). I normally would do it off releng4 and floppy, but I would be happy to try off an ISO and be a little more 'documentationish' throughout the process. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mike Tancsa, tel +1 519 651 3400 Sentex Communications mike@sentex.net Cambridge, Ontario Canada www.sentex.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-qa" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-qa Mon Nov 6 14:19:11 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org Received: from winston.osd.bsdi.com (winston.osd.bsdi.com [204.216.27.229]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0072837B479; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 14:19:09 -0800 (PST) Received: from winston.osd.bsdi.com (jkh@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by winston.osd.bsdi.com (8.11.1/8.9.3) with ESMTP id eA6MFJI66292; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 14:15:23 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jkh@winston.osd.bsdi.com) To: "Brian J. The problem is that the Alpha build is broken at the mometn and I have no machine on which to build such a release. I gave my own Alpha to FreeBSD.org some time back and, in retrospect, that was a mistake since I now have to rely on the kindness of others where any sort of release engineering is concerned for the alpha. I can't build an alpha ISO image right now and beast.FreeBSD.org, the machine in question, appears to be completely dead right now so even a remote build is not an option. - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-qa" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-qa Mon Nov 6 14:36:33 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org Received: from spoon.beta.com (064-184-210-067.inaddr.vitts.com [64.184.210.67]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B564E37B479; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 14:36:27 -0800 (PST) Received: from spoon.beta.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by spoon.beta.com (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id eA6MaBF09927; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 17:36:11 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mcgovern@spoon.beta.com) Message-Id: <200011062236.eA6MaBF09927@spoon.beta.com> To: Jordan Hubbard Cc: "Brian J. You can use rawhide.osd.bsdi.com. It's the 4100 and should be running 4.1. Actually, it's running 4.2-BETA already. You probably want to coordinate with O`Brien on using it though. That doesn't get in the way of an x86 ISO though. :-P > - Jordan -- John Baldwin -- http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ PGP Key: http://www.baldwin.cx/~john/pgpkey.asc "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-qa" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-qa Mon Nov 6 17:24:52 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org Received: from spoon.beta.com (064-184-210-067.inaddr.vitts.com [64.184.210.67]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21EE337B479; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 17:24:50 -0800 (PST) Received: from spoon.beta.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by spoon.beta.com (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id eA71OfF10249; Mon, 6 Nov 2000 20:24:42 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mcgovern@spoon.beta.com) Message-Id: <200011070124.eA71OfF10249@spoon.beta.com> To: Jordan Hubbard Cc: Mike Tancsa , qa@FreeBSD.ORG, jkh@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: ISO Snapshots ? JKH has an AS4100 for use in # this. Speaking of an Alpha ISO... The packages are still building on my Alpha box. They won't be exactly the same as the i386 packages because I only have a single box so I have to start the whole process many days before the ports freeze goes into effect. The biggest difference being that we won't have GNOME for sure and maybe not KDE because several of those packages don't currently build on the Alpha. Unless... Here are the logs again if someone wants to send me fixes for any the broken ports. :) http://bsd.planetwe.com/~steve/alpha/4-latest/ There are currently 3156 successfully built. It should be done soon because it is in x11-servers now. Give me a couple of more days to get the bits up where they should and get the packages split up and we should be good to go. -steve To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-qa" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-qa Wed Nov 8 16:36:53 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org Received: from winston.osd.bsdi.com (winston.osd.bsdi.com [204.216.27.229]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DF6337B479; Wed, 8 Nov 2000 16:36:49 -0800 (PST) Received: from winston.osd.bsdi.com (jkh@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by winston.osd.bsdi.com (8.11.1/8.9.3) with ESMTP id eA90agI16504; Wed, 8 Nov 2000 16:36:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jkh@winston.osd.bsdi.com) To: mjacob@feral.com Cc: Warner Losh , stable@FreeBSD.org, qa@FreeBSD.org, developers@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: 4.2-BETA release candidate #1 ISO installation image available In-Reply-To: Message from Matthew Jacob of "Wed, 08 Nov 2000 15:26:32 PST." I had no idea you were waiting on resources. You should have said! What do you mean 4100 limping along? What do you mean falling over? How? As far as I know, it works just fine for 4.2 (5.0 is something different && broken)- it sure is working fine at NASA/Ames (I still haven't quite got enough power to fire up the 4100 you loaned me- that should happen next week). How can I help? Should I drive out and assist? Can't until Monday- but could do so then. Should I set up some auxillary machines for you to get to at Feral? I can throw an XP1000 or PC164 at it for you. If you can help me if 'make release' fails I can also do some of this at Nasa Ames (can't let you directly in, but I can use any one of an 8200, 4100, AlphaStation 600) to build on- as I sort of said earlier I didn't do so until now because it was my experience during 4.1 that I had problems myself running 'make release' and I thought I'd leave it to the authors of that crime spree to work with it- but if you've been blocked, I can marshal some time && resources to help. -matt To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-qa" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-qa Wed Nov 8 17:49:33 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org Received: from spoon.beta.com (unknown [64.184.210.67]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AC11437B4C5 for ; Wed, 8 Nov 2000 17:49:30 -0800 (PST) Received: from spoon.beta.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by spoon.beta.com (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id eA91m9F16456 for ; Wed, 8 Nov 2000 20:48:15 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mcgovern@spoon.beta.com) Message-Id: <200011090148.eA91m9F16456@spoon.beta.com> To: qa@freebsd.org Subject: sysinstall issue (minor) Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2000 20:48:08 -0500 From: Brian McGovern Sender: owner-freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG It appears that when doing a custom install, and selecting distributions, the "All" button does not select all of the distributions (ie bin, the compat*s, src, man pages, ports, etc). It appears that Netscape depends on the XFree86 a.out libaries being installed as a dependency. Ok. However, the package that supposedly has them won't load, claiming: "There do not appear to be any a.out libaries on this machine. Please install the compat22 distribution via /stand/sysinstall...." In short, it appears that this package needs an update to let it know how to find the a.out libraries correctly. This has a large user impact, as Netscape can not be installed via the package system (and it generates a bunch of dependency errors to boot!). -Brian To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-qa" in the body of the message
