This would mean that essentially our JDK is broken and needs to be fixed (since it should run things the same as the Solaris JDK running green threads). The other issue is that said patches can't be contributed back to the maintainer of the code as Java has no concept of a preprocessor (whether it should have at least one that can allow conditional compilation based on at least the JDK version is another discussion :) and this creates a maintenance hassle for the port maintainer that can never be fixed. - Greg To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Jan 1 7:27:17 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 1 07:27:15 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from bastuba.partitur.se (bastuba.partitur.se [212.209.169.194]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 825E737B400 for ; Mon, 1 Jan 2001 07:27:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from palle.girgensohn.se (c193.150.249.140.cm-upc.chello.se [193.150.249.140]) by bastuba.partitur.se (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id QAA43768; Mon, 1 Jan 2001 16:27:10 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from girgen@partitur.se) Received: from partitur.se (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by palle.girgensohn.se (8.11.1/8.11.1) with ESMTP id f01FR8s21037; Mon, 1 Jan 2001 16:27:09 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from girgen@partitur.se) Sender: girgen@partitur.se Message-ID: <3A50A1CC.425680B8@partitur.se> Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 16:27:08 +0100 From: Palle Girgensohn Organization: Partitur X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.76 [en] (X11; U; FreeBSD 4.2-STABLE i386) X-Accept-Language: sv, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Cedric Berger Cc: Ernst de Haan , "Koster, K.J." , FreeBSD Java mailing list Subject: Re: Port for the Orion Server (J2EE Application Server) References: <59063B5B4D98D311BC0D0001FA7E4522026D7ADA@L04> <20001229144659.A24968@c187104187.telekabel.chello.nl> <3A4E0D67.BF6586CF@partitur.se> <3A4F8F02.4F8CFD51@wireless-networks.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Cedric Berger wrote: > > Palle Girgensohn wrote: > > > > Well, but -in the FreeBSD spirit- we will download the source files, which > > > need to be compiled before we get a JAR. Um, well, there is always pkg_add, so this is really not an issue... I think it must primarily be up to the person porting to decide. It is obvious that porting a java app is easier when *not* building from source, but there might be occasions where building from source is better for various reasons. We should not enforce one way or the other, IMO. Just see to it that java stuff is installed the proper FreeBSD way and don't clutter $PREFIX/. This is much more important. /Palle To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Jan 1 7:44:20 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 1 07:44:17 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mco-d3.ecui.com (unknown [64.182.83.166]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 509D937B400; Mon, 1 Jan 2001 07:44:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from Schneemann [62.155.169.150] by mco-d3.ecui.com (SMTPD32-6.04) id A69F102006A; Mon, 01 Jan 2001 03:58:07 -0500 From: To: hjer@gmx.ch Cc: Subject: 20001 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Message-Id: <200101010359282.SM01128@Schneemann> Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 10:46:27 -0500 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org EUCH ALLEN EIN GESUNDES UND FROHES 2001 _____________________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Jan 1 11:25:34 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 1 11:25:33 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from daedalus.cs.brandeis.edu (daedalus.cs.brandeis.edu [129.64.3.179]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C6AE37B400 for ; Mon, 1 Jan 2001 11:25:33 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (meshko@localhost) by daedalus.cs.brandeis.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id OAA27377; Mon, 1 Jan 2001 14:25:21 -0500 Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 14:25:21 -0500 (EST) From: Mikhail Kruk To: Palle Girgensohn Cc: Cedric Berger , Ernst de Haan , "Koster, K.J." , FreeBSD Java mailing list Subject: Re: Port for the Orion Server (J2EE Application Server) In-Reply-To: <3A50A1CC.425680B8@partitur.se> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: meshko@daedalus.cs.brandeis.edu Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org How about making two ports -- one installs binary (jars) and makes sure they are ready for use and the other one installs source and leaves compilation to the user? Pure java code may be platform independent - however, the deployment of a java application may not be. The candidates for patches are the .properties (and friends) and JNI code. At any rate, this is practically a non-discussion. The ports(7) manpage is very explicit about building from *source*. I would expect a stink on the architecture mailing list if that were broken. Note that exceptions have been made in the past: 1. Non-open software, e.g. netscape communicator 2. Software that benefits from a binary port e.g. cvsup. In this case, you see a port "cvsup" that builds from source, *and* "cvsup-bin" that downloads prebuilt binaries from an arbitrary site. Signed jars fall into this category and one would create a separate port for a signed jar. Like any properly paranoid sysadmin, I like to build from source whenever possible. Java under FreeBSD is already fraught with pitfalls - let's not make it less attractive! - J To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Jan 2 3:25:21 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 2 03:25:13 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from heinz.jollem.com (c104187.upc-c.chello.nl [212.187.104.187]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0EE9837B400 for ; Tue, 2 Jan 2001 03:25:09 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ernst@localhost) by heinz.jollem.com (8.11.1/8.11.1) id f02BNxS00904; Tue, 2 Jan 2001 12:23:59 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ernst) Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 12:23:59 +0100 From: Ernst de Haan To: FreeBSD Java mailing list Cc: Sebastiaan van Erk Subject: Java ports Message-ID: <20010102122359.A786@c187104187.telekabel.chello.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Sender: ernst@heinz.jollem.com Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org First of all, a very happy New Year to all of you! Considering all the discussion on the subject of binary versus source-based Java ports, it is clear that there are two camps. So perhaps there is room for both. Let's get all pros and cons of the different options lines up. BINARY VS SOURCE-BASED Correct me if I am wrong, but I think these are the pros and cons of both approaches: * Source-based Typically involves downloading source and build files, compiling .java files to .jar file(s) using either a Makefile or an Ant build file. * Binary Typically involves downloading one or more .jar files. Oh, and IMO, a .jar file is definitely a binary distro, it's *not* half-way between source and binary, it's simply a binary. But one *some* systems (on all FreeBSD systems, but not one Java processor-based systems, which I happen to have one of too) the processor-code (which bytecode is) is converted to different processor-code, either using a normal interpreter, a JIT or some other mechanism. Note that Java programs are not *by definition* portable, and that they are not guaranteed nor supposed to run the same on all platforms. Most are, and all "100% Pure Java" programs should. Java programs may make assumptions w.r.t. path separators, file locations, screen size, locale, character set, etc, they may contain native code (JNI) etc. * Pros of source-based: [1] You can always check the source code before you run the code, one of the major advantages of FreeBSD over Windows [2] The choice of the compiler can be left up to the port maintainer and/or the user (compilers get better and produce better-optimized code) [3] The choice of the JDK to compile with can be left up to the maintainer and/or the user. [3] Source is always readable for reference purposes (no separate download) [4] Operating-system specific settings can be used when building (yes, this is possible, even Ant supports this, using the "os.name" property) [5] System-specific settings can be used when building (perhaps the suggested "bsd.ant.mk" is a good idea?) * Cons of source-based: [1] May be time-consuming to compile the .java files, especially if jikes is not used. [2] May be memory-consuming to compile the .java files, this is especially a problem on a system which is low on memory (like the mentioned 32 MB system) [3] Needs a compiler to be installed, some systems may only require a JRE and some .jar files. At this moment you can't just install a JRE, but we may consider making this an option, too. [4] A binary .jar file may be signed by the author. LOCATION OF JAVA PORTS Now there was a discussion about where the Java ports should go, too. IMHO this depends on the port. A simple library, distributed as a single .jar file would go to ${PREFIX}/share/java/classes/, while a complete application with a lot of different kinds of files, like the Orion Application Server, should IMO have it's own subdir under ${PREFIX}. It should not be treated very differently from any Application Server written in C++, IMHO. The application might *expect* files to be in a certain location, like the jars in the main application directory, the config files in config/ or etc/, etc. EXAMPLES Let't take a few examples and see what would be the optimal solution to make everybody happy (or at least most ppl): * Orion (http://www.orionserver.com) A closed-source Java application, supposed to be portable. (other applications in this category are BugSeeker and JBuilder) * Ant (http://jakarta.apache.org) An open-source Java application, supposed to be portable. The build process involves running shell scripts. * JUMP (http://members.xoom.com/_XMCM/znerd/java/jump/index.html) An open-source (LGPL) Java library, supposed to be portable, can be downloaded as a JAR, or using the source code. (other libraries in this category are JDOM and Xerces-J) The port for "Orion" has to use the binary .jar files, since there is no source available. We could attempt to split the standard distribution so the .jar files could be placed in ${PREFIX}/share/java/classes, but I wonder if we should attempt this. Why would we? The port for "Ant" could download a .jar file, or it could build the .jar from the source. There are advantages to both, as pointed out. We *could* create 2 ports: * "ant" (categories: java, devel) Uses the source code and the shell scripts to build the .jar file(s). This port would require a JDK (1.1 or higher I think) to build (BUILD_DEPENDS). * "ant-bin" (categories: java, devel) Just downloads a .jar file, so it's much faster. This port would only require a JRE to _run_ (RUN_DEPENDS). Both would, however, need to install an "ant" shell script so it can be run from a shell by just invoking "ant". While the .jar file could go into ${PREFIX}/share/java/classes/, the ant shell script would need to go in a different location, either in ${PREFIX}/bin (yuck!) or in ${PREFIX}/ant/bin/ or in ${PREFIX}/share/java/ant/bin/ or something. Perhaps we could _start_ with an "ant" port and then provide an "ant-bin" port, as I still prefer the build from source code. After that we may create the "ant-bin" port (which would actually be easier) and perhaps a JRE too, so we could make "ant-bin" depend on (JRE || JDK) (1.1 || 1.2 || 1.3). Finally the open-source libraries, like JUMP, JDOM and Xerces-J. We could take the same approach as we used for Ant and the like. Now, let's stop discussing and let's get some real work done! ;) -- Ernst To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Jan 2 3:25:25 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 2 03:25:23 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mco-d1.ecui.com (unknown [64.182.83.200]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B2E8537B698; Tue, 2 Jan 2001 03:25:13 -0800 (PST) Received: from gesundes neues [217.80.21.80] by mco-d1.ecui.com (SMTPD32-6.04) id A86934B0050; Tue, 02 Jan 2001 12:15:53 +0100 From: To: merlyewn@gmx.ch Cc: Subject: ein gesundes Neues 2001 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Message-Id: <200101021217586.SM00960@gesundes neues> Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 12:22:42 +0100 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org EIN GESUNDES JAHR 2001 WIR WÜNSCHEN ALLEN EIN GESUNDS JAHR 2001 ! _______________________________________________________________________________ Versand mit PS@mail.exe http://www.aquadrat.de/download/psmail.htm _______________________________________________________________________________ http://www.selfproducer.de http://www.stripline.de ------------------------------- mit der Registrierung dieses Programmes entfallen alle Werbeeinblenungen und Fusszeilen --------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Jan 2 3:28: 5 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 2 03:28:04 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from heinz.jollem.com (c104187.upc-c.chello.nl [212.187.104.187]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4E4D037B400 for ; Tue, 2 Jan 2001 03:28:03 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ernst@localhost) by heinz.jollem.com (8.11.1/8.11.1) id f02BQs300933 for freebsd-java@freebsd.org; Tue, 2 Jan 2001 12:26:54 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ernst) Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 12:26:54 +0100 From: Ernst de Haan To: FreeBSD Java mailing list Subject: KDE 2 and JDK 1.2.2b10 Message-ID: <20010102122654.A922@c187104187.telekabel.chello.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Sender: ernst@heinz.jollem.com Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Did I mention that JDK 1.2.2b10 runs perfectly in Konqueror, the KDE 2 web browser, under XFree86 4.0.2/FreeBSD 4.2-S? First of all, remove the downloaded tar file: # rm /usr/ports/distfiles/jdk1.1.8_ELF.V1999-11-9.tar.gz Ignore any error messages. and then try making the port from scratch: # pkg_remove jdk-1.1.8 # cd /usr/ports/java/jdk # rm -rf work # make install Ignore any error messages. If there are no error messages, then that's okay too, ofcours :) Now if this process fails, send a detailed description of the error messages back to the list. -- Ernst jesse reynolds wrote: > Hi > > I'm having awful problems trying to get any sort of java functioning > on FreeBSD. I've said it's half-way source/binary for the following reasons: 1) James Gosling said that he designed the java bytecode to match the often stack/tree-based intermediate representation you find between the front-end and the back-end of a compiler toolchain. 2) With any of the free java decompiler available, you can very very accurately recreate the full source code of any non-obfuscated jar file. You don't get the comments, but you have *everything* else. Boy, that's useful when, like me, you sometimes lose your sources. So "paranoid" sysadmins like Joshua can review the code. BTW a think the code should always be shipped along with the jar file. 3) You can patch it easily with jardiff or any basic zip tool. I'm not sure what your problem is, but I've never seen a failing build of jdk1.1.8 from the ports before. I wonder why you don't have an MD5 checksum file. When was the last time you updated your ports tree? Perhaps there is a version mismatch here. If the version of your port is different from the port system version, then that might explain it. Try updating your ports tree using cvsup. You should execute something like: # cvsup /etc/cvsupfile If you don't have a cvsupfile, then check the examples (somewhere under /usr/share/doc I think) or privmsg me, I can send you one. I'll have to try it after installing the compat3x libs. As a minor nit, I tried installing OpenJIT yesterday, and although I have linux jdk1.2.2 installed, OpenJIT insisted on pulling down 1.1.8 and trying to build it, which is when I smacked into this problem. Is there a way to tell OpenJIT to use what I have installed? -- Chris BeHanna Software Engineer behanna@bogus.zbzoom.net Remove "bogus" before responding. It's available as a port. First make sure your ports tree is up to date. You can use CVSup for this. If you don't know how to do that, let me know and I'll give you some simple instructions. After that, download the Linux JDK version 1.3.0 from the following location: * http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download-linux.html Move the file to /usr/ports/distfiles (as root): # mv j2sdk-1_3_0-linux.bin /usr/ports/distfiles/ Then execute as root: # cd /usr/ports/java/linux-jdk13 # make install You now have an installed Sun Linux JDK 1.3.0. But it will probably freeze since HotSpot doesn't really like the Linuxulator. So you should modify the jvm.cfg file. This is what it will contain after you downloaded it: # cat /usr/local/linux-jdk1.3.0/jre/lib/jvm.cfg | tail -4 -client -hotspot -server -classic Move the -classic option to the top: -classic -client -hotspot -server When you try to run the JDK, you should set JAVA_HOME to /usr/local/linux-jdk1.3.0. And perhaps, when executing Java programs, you may want to increase the initial heap size from 1 MB to 2 MB using the following command: $ java -Xms2048K And check out the following page: * http://www.kjkoster.org/java/ Good luck, Ernst Thomas Runge wrote: > > As I have a huge demand on Java 1.3 on FreeBSD, I tried the latest > sun jdk for Linux using our linuxulator. > I patched .java_wrapper as stated in some mails. In this case "expr" is not given an absolute path and the regex portion of the commands (in the single quotes following the colon character) begin with a circumflex character ('^') but are otherwise the same as in the .java_wrapper script. This works correctly as is; a backslash before the forward slash is not required. It's interesting that the man page for expr says, "The regular expression is anchored to the beginning of the string with an implicit ``^''." Hmmmmm. The "jpda" port I just submitted uses the proposed schema, so the JAR file goes into /usr/local/share/java/classes/jpda-1.0/jpda.jar while the rest goes to /usr/local/share/java/jpda-1.0/. At the moment I am not sure where to put the files installed by the "bugseeker" port I am working on. Perhaps I should just put everything under /usr/local/bugseeker1.0.2 or perhaps I should put the JAR file(s) in /usr/local/share/java/classes/bugseeker-1.0.2/ and the rest in /usr/local/share/java/bugseeker-1.0.2/. Notice that under /usr/local/share/java there is a dash-sign, because that's what the JFC port does, but in /usr/local there is no dash. * Where should we install applications like Orion and BugSeeker ? * Should we use dashes under /usr/local/share/java/ (if not, then we should change at least the jfc port) -- Ernst To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jan 3 19:15:43 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 3 19:15:42 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from heinz.jollem.com (c104187.upc-c.chello.nl [212.187.104.187]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5580037B400 for ; Wed, 3 Jan 2001 19:15:41 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ernst@localhost) by heinz.jollem.com (8.11.1/8.11.1) id f043EU942503; Thu, 4 Jan 2001 04:14:30 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ernst) Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 04:14:30 +0100 From: Ernst de Haan To: Patrick Gardella , FreeBSD Java mailing list Subject: New port: BugSeeker for Java 2 Message-ID: <20010104041430.A42481@c187104187.telekabel.chello.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Sender: ernst@heinz.jollem.com Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi Patrick and all, Just submitted a PR for yet another Java port: BugSeeker. For example, the version > number of FreeBSD, JDK and the JIT is very useful to > track the bug. I supplied all this information except the FreeBSD version and shujit version. It is FreeBSD-STABLE 12-29-2000. The JDK is 1.2.2 patch level 10 - native for FreeBSD. The shujit version is unknown to me - but it is whatever was newest at the time of compilation (09-05-2000). The program ran tonight without a JIT and no problem so far. But, as I stated, it has run many times without the dump, only occassionally does it happen, and it appears to be random. I can run it with the same data, exactly, and not trip the error a second or third time. > > If you can write up the process to reproduce your > problem, the developers will be able to debug even > though they don't have the source code. I just run the class in the jar file once for each stock and it loads the data into a postgresql (7.0.2) database. The class is run from a script that is called by cron each night to download the latest stock information of what I am looking for. If you need, I can make the jar available to you, as well as the core that was dumped (70MB -> ~1MB compressed). Okay, I'm not new to FreeBSD, everything is quite up to date on this machine. But thanks anyway! The problem with the port is, that it fetches an old package, there is a jdk1.3.0_1 now. Without that I get the infamous "cannot uninstall alt signal stack" error. Shouldn't that go to the port patches? > When you try to run the JDK, you should set JAVA_HOME to > /usr/local/linux-jdk1.3.0. Thats not needed. At least on this machine. But now something strange. I installed the jdk manually into my $HOME, actually into /usr/home/runge/java/jdk1.3.0_1. I made all changes to .java_wrapper's and jvm.cfg. Still core dumps. But as quiet a few guys have success running it on FreeBSD, there must be something wrong with my setup. I moved the directory to /usr/local/linux-jdk1.3.0 and without any additional changes it worked! Don't know why, maybe it's a problem, that both are on different partitions? These are the JPDA shared libraries. You can build them from the code Sun did release at one point under the SCSL. However, they've since taken the code down. If you're adventurous, there are patches and the code to do so on my web site. However, the patches on the web site miss one key patch which I posted to the group a while back (should be in the archives). It seems what really needs to happen is for patchset 11 to come out, with JPDA support included. Let me talk that over with the porting team, it may make your life easier (especially for ports that depend on JPDA). - Greg To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Jan 4 5: 4:11 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 4 05:04:10 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ds-01.itg.discovery.com (ops.itg.discovery.com [198.147.13.130]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 64A9937B400 for ; Thu, 4 Jan 2001 05:04:09 -0800 (PST) Received: by ds-01.itg.discovery.com; id IAA06989; Thu, 4 Jan 2001 08:03:20 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <3A547469.1AAD5CBE@freebsd.org> Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 08:02:33 -0500 From: Patrick Gardella Organization: Mindbank Consulting Group X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.76 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Greg Lewis Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: New port: BugSeeker for Java 2 References: <20010104041430.A42481@c187104187.telekabel.chello.nl> <20010104195001.A2504@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Just to get things clear (for me at least), are you suggesting that patchset 11 will have JPDA with it, or that it will be capable of running the JPDA? I don't think there is such a thing as "running the JPDA". Its a specification which is either implemented or not :). So, I'm suggesting that patchset 11 will contain a JPDA implementation. We have SCSL'ed code for it, so there are no barriers to releasing it. This will mean that applications using the JPDA API for debugging will run with the native port. - Greg To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Jan 4 17: 4:23 2001 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 4 17:04:21 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from heinz.jollem.com (c104187.upc-c.chello.nl [212.187.104.187]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0EEC537B400 for ; Thu, 4 Jan 2001 17:04:21 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ernst@localhost) by heinz.jollem.com (8.11.1/8.11.1) id f0513BV31987 for freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG; Fri, 5 Jan 2001 02:03:11 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ernst) Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 02:03:11 +0100 From: Ernst de Haan To: FreeBSD Java mailing list Subject: Re: JFC Dependency missing for jdk12-beta ? Is hotspot use under FreeBSD a distant goal, or something we are likely to see soon? As a very remote note I wonder if that explains some random quirks with the latest Quake III as well, they also use some kind of VM technology. What is the technical problem with the JAVA VM under the Linuxulator? IIRC, hotspot needs kernel threads, which are rudimentary available on -current. So, we have to wait for 5.0 at least. So, we have to wait for 5.0 at least. Maybe for 6.0 :-( Ok, I'm confused, I've seen lots of mail on this list, saying hotspot doesn't work with Stable at all, because it needs Kernel threads. However, I've had the linux-jdk-1.3.0 installed for a while now (never changed the cfg file), and I can run with java -hotspot just fine. I'm cvsup'ed on 4.2-Stable as of Dec 10 or so. I think by default it uses the hotspot code, because top reports many java processes when I run one java program. Any ideas why it is working for me? I get a blank AWT window and then it dies with a SIGILL for any application or demo that I've tried. This is easy to replicate: cd $JAVA_HOME/demos/java3d/HelloUniverse java HelloUniverse It complains about a ton of fonts not found, detects my CPU, thinks awhile, displays the blank window, and dies. I've tried recompiling the source, and I still get the same error.
