I got a new machine (1 GHz PIII, "ALDI PC") with ASUS board.
The soundchip is <AudioPCI ES1371>
Theoretically it should be supported, but I get this
"ac97 codec invalid or not present (id =3D=3D 0)" message on startup.

Who has currently the maintainer bit set for this driver ?

Hello I am of Argentina and I have a problem 
in the configuration of the Fxtv.
The TV board that I use calls Winfast TV 2000 
with chip bt878.
Here in Argentina PAL-NC is used. Them comment 
that profit to see image with sound but I see it 
in black and white :C(
Try with version 1.02. 
In linux I could to correctly use it with the
program xawtv but linux sucks!
The parameters that use to make it walk in linux
are the following ones (in case they are to them 
useful):

I have an Intel D815EEA motherboard <URL:
http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/ea/ea_inst.htm>.  This has
one built-in audio system (ICH2) and another optional one
(SoundBlaster).  I have the version without the SoundBlaster.

I want to get the audio working; it's not currently supported in
-CURRENT or -STABLE.  The chip is called the ICH2, PCI vendor ID 8086,
device ID 2445.  At boot time the PCI probe sees the device but can't
identify it.  According to Intel it's AC97 compatible.  I have the
Linux driver code for it (i810_audio.c).

I'm prepared to put in some coding time.  Is anyone else already
working on this driver, or shall I start from scratch?  If I should
start from scratch, presumably I should clone one of the existing AC97
PCI drivers, such as es137x.c or cs4281.c.  Can anyone with experience
of the sound drivers advise me here?  Is this even the right mailing
list?

I did tests with the OSS demo. pmidi didnt work, rosegarden was great.
Somebody said, newmidi is in 5 current. Is there an iso for
install/upgrade somewhere ? Would this be a good idea anyway ?

Hmm.  Well, there are some hits in DejaNews/Google Groups (surf
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search and key in exact phrase
"sb_reset_dsp_failed"), but none seem particularly useful for an English
or German speaker.  Maybe this is a Plug-n-Pray issue?

If your card is ISA, have you reserved the SB card's IRQs and DMAs in the
BIOS for ISA?

That looks like it's the Sorensen Video Codec, which is proprietory.

Quicktime movies can use any number of video/audio codecs, and most
authoring tools by default use the proprietory ones, forcing
end-users to use 'licensed' players...

But, some Quicktime movies are 'safe'.  I used 'xanim', even if it
can't play all of them, it tells me what codec it's built with.

voxware is unmaintained.  it will not work with isapnp cards as the isapnp
code disables all isapnp cards when probing for non-isapnp devices.

sb16 support in newpcm has improved massively since 4.2 as you would know if
you cared enough to track -stable or read commit logs/cvs-all.  simply
complaining about a 9 month old release is unhelpful.

Is 4.3 (or any other upcoming release) expected to have better support for
the externel midi port (uart?) on pci cards, paticularly creative cards?

there will be no better midi support in 4.3 than in 4.2.  if there is a 4.4
release it may have newmidi incorporated, otherwise 5.0 is where it's at.

I'm hardly complaining.  Just stating facts for someone else that's looking
for the path of least resistance to get a particular soundcard working with
FreeBSD.

I realize and appreciate that lots of hard work is going into pcm/newpcm
and look forward to the day when I can switch over (when some card-specific
problems are fixed or when I upgrade my system/soundcard someday).  After
all, the driver is cleaner, easier to maintain and extend, and designed for
FreeBSD (unlike Voxware).

And "caring enough" to track the head of a CVS tree is hardly appropriate.
If you're a developer, you know that's asking for trouble if you don't have
the time (or want to devote the time from other things) to working through
the occasional commit bugs.

4.2 is the "current" release (see www.freebsd.org if you don't believe me).
I appreciate and am thankful that some folks want to take each and every
commit done day-to-day by FreeBSD developers and test them with their
day-to-day jobs and data, but I personally would rather spend my time on
tasks other than working through bugs that invariably crop up there.  It
takes me enough time to get everything set up the way I like it when I
upgrade to official releases! ;-)  I'm still massaging 4.2-RELEASE to-taste.

yes, it also works well for me at least playing MP3's with mpg123 and
xmms. It _does not_ work with x11amp though.

Hi,

as somebody already steated out on -multimedia,
this little fix works to get the soundchip with revision 03 to work.
He has a gigabyte board, I have a new asus ..

Could this go into stable ? I assume many manufacturers now use that
chip...

Hi i'm having trouble with my STB TV/FM Tuner, I'm able to see video running 
from the cable in, but i'm unable to hear any sound.  I am assuming sound is 
supported thru the card and my soundcard.  I've checked with gmixer, and no 
lines (to me) seem to be muted.
I've checked the cord that runs from the AUDIO OUT port of my TV Tuner, into 
the Tuner IN port of my sound card.  XMMS works.  I would really like to get 
this working, since it does work in windows.  Any ideas?  I also get this 
error when it starts (again, video comes up but no sound):

I filed PR 26415 about this problem, and the fix was committed to
-current on last April, 8; however, it has not been MFC'd yet.

You might check with just plain 'mixer'.  Sometimes soundcards have 
wierd mixer controls.  Also, have you tried pluggin your speakers
directly into the audio-out of the TV card?

Your X server or video card doesn't support DGA.  This isn't fatal,
although
you will notice a much higher CPU load while the TV tuner is on (coming
from
X, not fxtv).  Turning on DGA may be trivial for your card (Matrox users
for 
instance just define "WITH_MATROX_GXX_DRIVER" when building the XFree-4 
port), but that's a seperate issue.

That it does not generate output mpeg_musicin likes.

I only changed to WAV, yes.

MPEG I has acceptable quality for low processor speed, although
mpeg_encode is not very quick (ffmpeg captures MPEG-I on the fly,
unfortunately only under Linux.) For offline capture and archieving
purpose, maybe avifile would be nice, but it does not read raw frames..

Try plugging a headphone into the back of the TV card.  If that doesn't
give you audio with Fxtv tuned into a channel, it's probably a tuner config
issue.

As Jason said, you really want this if you can get it (better frame rates
and lower CPU usage).  I'm running 4.0.3 as well (albeit with a Matrox
G200) with DGA support.  You can run Fxtv to check, or here's a quicker
test to let you know when you're configured right:

     > xdpyinfo | grep DGA
     XFree86-DGA

And make sure you "don't" have this in your XF86Config:

     SubSection "extmod"
        Option  "omit XFree86-DGA"
     EndSubSection

You might check with just plain 'mixer'.  Sometimes soundcards have
wierd mixer controls.  Also, have you tried pluggin your speakers
directly into the audio-out of the TV card?

Your X server or video card doesn't support DGA.  This isn't fatal,
although
you will notice a much higher CPU load while the TV tuner is on (coming
from
X, not fxtv).  Turning on DGA may be trivial for your card (Matrox users
for
instance just define "WITH_MATROX_GXX_DRIVER" when building the XFree-4
port), but that's a seperate issue.

Hmm, the bktr driver seems to understand your tuner, or at least it
thinks
it does.

there isn't an audio out for my TV Tuner... there's an audio in tho.  when i 
was saying Audio OUT, i was referring to the internal wire that goes from 
the CD Player, into the TV Tuner, then another wire that goes from the TV 
Tuner into the sound card... these aren't normal headphone wires, they are 
specially modified (you know the kind you see going from CD roms to 
Soundcards).  Sorry i don't know the exact name of it, tho.  i checked with 
just plain mixer, line2 and line3 were muted, so i set them at 75:75.  That 
didn't fix anything along the lines of my Tuner, though.  Do you guys need 
anymore info?

Here is a problem I have had with pcm.
I have a Toshiba 4010CDT with the Yamaha OPL3-SAx sound system.
I can play .au files fine, and other sound seems to work fine.
When I use XMMS, .wav files play, but slowly, and they are clipped at the
end.  This feature (.wav files) has not worked for me since 4.0.

Can you get sound from audio CDs?  If so, there is something is most
likely wrong with the bktr tuner, if not there is something wierd
with your soundcard/cables and you should double check the cables
by plugging the CD-ROM directly into the soundcard and fiddling
with the cables (can you even plug these in backwards?  Are there 
multiple slots on the card?  Is it plugged into a digital audio
slot?)

  ports/graphics/xmovie support QuickTime, but I don't know whather
it support SVQ1 code(?).

No, there are no Sorenson codecs available for Linux/FreeBSD.  This 
is not for lack of trying, between Sorenson's Lawyers and Apples 
Lawyers nobody wants to get within 100' of that codec.  Even if 
somebody were crazy enough to jump into that snake pit, there is
no way you'd ever get the codecs out of Apple/Sorenson.  

The upshot is, you will not be able to play any Quicktimes you download
off of the net, as anything encoded in the past 2 to 3 years has used
the Sorenson codec.  

There is a bright side to all of this, at least you don't have to use
the horrendous Apple Quicktime player under Windows.

    Not to mention that it BSOD's NT4 w/SP4. :-) NT4 under vmware
    complains about something not being implemented. Not sure if it
    is in vmware or Linux emulation.

From my (completely unscientific) observations, the Sorenson Codec is
somewhat better than Indeo 5, especially at the high bitrates everybody
uses when they encode the Quicktimes.  Compared to MPEG2, I'd say they
are pretty similar, with the edge going to Sorenson (as the bitrates
invovled are usually a little low for MPEG2).  Quality is better than
your average MPEG1 however.  MPEG4 beats Sorenson pretty handily though,
although most peopel use poorly written a buggy MPEG4 codecs (DivX), so 
you may get better results from Sorenson.

Hello,

I am a relatively new FreeBSD user (I just installed FreeBSD 4.3-RC3) and tried to compile the port that is supposed to support my soundcard. However, I can't find the file to compile in order to get the files that are given in the documentation. Hence, my sound doesn't work. I have a Turtle Beach Montego II A3D card. I have gotten OSS to work under FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE. However, I can't get it to work under FreeBSD 4.3-RC3 (release date: April 10th, 2001). Can anyone give me any suggestions as to how to proceed, or give me the link to the actual source code with Makefiles so I can compile it myself from source? I would really appreciate anything that you can do to help. -- Thanks.

I'm attempting violate the DMCA and exercise my fair use rights
(amazingly, in a single act) on my laptop.  What I was trying to do, just
for fun, was play a DVD (The Matrix in this particular case) on my root
window.  The problem comes in trying to read the .vob from the DVD itself.
I get the following errors:

acd0: READ_BIG - ILLEGAL REQUEST asc=6f ascq=03 error=00

I can boot Win2k and play the movie, but damnit, that's not the point.

Here's the dmesg info on the DVD ROM drive:

acd0: DVD-ROM <TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-C2402> at ata1-master using UDMA33

I can mount the filesystem just fine, and it accesses audio and data CDs
with no problems.  It's just reading the .vob(s) where I have problems.
Anyone have a clue?  Laptop is a Dell Latitude CPx.  Have people seen this
on desktop systems or other laptops?

Trying to cat or copy the *.vob(s) always produce this error.  My next
step is to attempt to dump | restore on the device, but I suspect the
error will not go away, if dump will even access a CD/DVD device anyway.

check out the xine project...I'm not sute if they've gottent the dvd codecs
working for encrypted dvds yet but it's worth a shot...also look into
opendvd.org and advocacy group for opening the dvd encryption...

dump/restore only works on UFS so that won't work.  You need the css-auth
program with freebsd patches to unlock the disk.  It's pretty easy to
find on the net.

So what's going on here, is that I need something else just to read the
scrambled vob off the disc, beforce efdtt can unscramble it?  I can only
assume the title key the the long string in the disc.id file.  If someone
has an actual reference on how to use this, I'd really appreciate a
pointer.

Yup, you're confused. ;-)  There's hardware locking in the driver you
must circumvent.  That's what css-auth is for.  I believe you just need
to use css-auth to get the data off the disk and then any player will
play it.  The title key is actually encoded on the disk using player
keys (many of which are unassigned).  The player uses it's key to decode
the title key which is used by code like efdtt to decode the stream into
an MPEG2 stream.

One of the things that the MPAA was pissed about in decss is that it
stole a player key from XING (who violated their license agreement with
the DVD-CCA by not hiding the key at all).  It turns out that you don't
need a player key though because the crypto used is so totally lame that
you can just break it in a couple of minutes.

Folks,

I don't have any "ins" with Yamaha but I sure could start poking around.

I do have a CD in my hand that I burned on 31 January 2001 with 4.2-STABLE
that was no more than a few days old.  This was with the same firmware
that Matthew has and the 4.2-STABLE would not have been more than 2 or 3
days old.  (I buildworld a whole bunch).  Now I did not get 16x out of the
drive, but backing off to 12x or 10x resulted in a successful CD burn.

First and foremost - ignore the README that's included with the driver
tarball. It's outdated (I will make sure it gets removed with the next 
update). You don't actually need to unpack and poke around it yourself.

Second - if you could be more specific about the "files that you can't
find" etc, it would allow me to promptly resolve any problems you have.

Now, I'm assuming you do have the kernel sources under /usr/src/sys ?
If you do, all that's left is to do the following as root:

1) cd /usr/ports/audio/aureal-kmod
2) make deinstall clean install
3) cp /usr/local/etc/rc.d/aureal.sh.sample /usr/local/etc/rc.d/aureal.sh
4) possibly making any modifications to aureal.sh to fit your taste
5) sh /usr/local/etc/rc.d/aureal.sh start

If you have any problems doing 2), please post the _entire_ and _complete_
output from make that you're getting, including all error messages. Same
for any other step that fails to work for you.

Can you get sound from audio CDs? If so, there is something is most
likely wrong with the bktr tuner, if not there is something wierd
with your soundcard/cables and you should double check the cables
by plugging the CD-ROM directly into the soundcard and fiddling
with the cables (can you even plug these in backwards? Are there
multiple slots on the card? Is it plugged into a digital audio
slot?)

from the CD.  But if i had that, it would work.  I remade my bktr driver by 
downloading it and remade my kernel, i also upgraded fxtv to the latest 
version. I know i have the cables right because it works when i reboot into 
win2k.  it uses Aux 2 in windows *shrug* but that doesn't say anything about 
what fxtv uses.  Is there anything i'm overlookign?  How about a device i'm 
missing? Anything at ALL???

Couple of minutes?  I've never seen it take more than 5 seconds to crack
on my machine.  Not that it means much, I still can't get DVDs to play
reliably on my machine.  The MPEG2 tracks are fine, but without the IFOs
(for the always track switching subtitles!) it just doesn't work.  Worse
I've never been able to stream directly from the DVD, I always have to
dump
the huge vobs onto my HD and decrypt them first.

Downloading it?  The Bktr driver is part of the kernel sources by
default 
now, you should be able to take a stock -STABLE kernel and stick a 
"device bktr" to get it to work.  

My only other thought is the tuner chip changed subtly at some point
in a way that doesn't break the chip probe but still prevents it from
playing sound.  That sounds a tad farfetched (why wouldn't they
increment
the chip id?) but I guess it could happen.  Another option is that the
bktr driver just has a bug in it, and you might be able to get it
working
again by doing a little debug work and talking to the developer.

That's the _title_ key.  Each VOB file has a title key.  But the
DVD itself has a key as well, and that's what the cssauth programs
do; find that key and 'unlock' the drive.

Then, when youve' mounted it, you can just puruse the filesystem
(with certian restrictions.)

I, for one, have specifically gotten 'The Matrix' to play on my
desktop under 4.1-RELEASE.

Adjust for your system, and I assume you can find the right software
off of the net, and patch if neccessary.

What I'm doing (and I certainly would appreciate input from folks
doing things differently.

As root:

  mount_cd9660 /dev/acd0c /mnt
  /usr/local/dvd/bin/tstdvd /dev/acd0c

This'll print out magic numbers, and end with 

  Received Session Key:   XX XX XX XX XX
  Authenticated
  Received Disc Key:      XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
  Authenticated

if it works.

As a user, get a list of vob files.

  % find /mnt -name \*.vob

This combination of tools works best for me:

In a simple script ( I call mine 'vob_play'):

  FindKey $1 | DecVOB $1 | mpeg2player -vob -f -

Which you'd call with:

  ./vob_play <vob_file>

You can play it off of disk directly.  I can even pull it (choppily)
off of my laptop via a PCMCIA DVD-ROM.

Hint: the start of the movie is vts_02_1.vob.

YMMV.  My tools are months old.

I have found several difficulties:

- the sound doesn't always syncronize well.
- tstdvd can't guess every disc's key.
- the bottleneck is not the decryption, but the playing; I don't
  know a UNIX mpeg player that will take advantage of any MPEG
  hardware, so you're trapped to what you're CPU can do.
- with some tools, your X display has to be set to 16 bits.

Hence, some disks / titles won't work with these tools.

When I have time, I want to check out the lastest-and-greatest
tools, but, hey.

flagrantly.

Speaking purely hypothetically, it is possible for someone like me, from a
purely theoretical standpoint, to outline the steps one might need to take
to play an encrypted DVD on a FreeBSD machine.

First, you'll notice that any drive you buy nowadays is region-locked. This
means that when you get it from the store, it does not have a region
selected. It, therefore, will petulently refuse to play any encrypted
content. I believe utilities exist to set the region on *nix, but the last
time I encountered such a drive, I just plugged it into a handy Windows
machine, played a DVD on it, thus forcing it to set the region. Beware that
without certain other (arguably illegal) actions you may be limited to
changing the region on your drive a certain number of times.

I have had no trouble at all playing unencrypted (pr0n) DVDs using the xine
port (aviplay from the avifile port also works well, but has nothing to do
with DVDs). I've had no end of problems with xmps, mainly because I use kde
and want to build it without gnome (that is, without loading a dozen extra
ports for no other reason), and the non-gnome version won't resize the skin
for different sizes of video window. xine is still in its infancy, but
hopefully it will be ready for prime time just about the time the courts all
decide that the DMCA is nonsense. :-)

One could theoretically postulate that searching google for +xine +dvd
+plugin might yield the location of a version of the dvd plugin for xine
that has DeCSS built into it. One might speculate that using this plugin
would make encrypted disks function exactly like unencrypted ones for the
purposes of playing them back with xine.

Last time I looked, the kernel support for this had been fixed for SCSI
devices, but ATA devices still needed the patch given.
