I have to recommend Ogle myself. It's the only thing that plays DVD acceptably on my PII-400, and it supports menus. Xine gives me nothing but grief and vlc is just slow. I consider Olge the first truely usable DVD player for FreeBSD. -- \ |_ _|__ __|_ \ __| Jason Andresen jandrese@mitre.org |\/ | | | / _| Network and Distributed Systems Engineer _| _|___| _| _|_\___| Office: 703-883-7755 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Mon Nov 19 8:45:13 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from hotmail.com (oe48.law10.hotmail.com [64.4.14.20]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 36CB637B419 for ; Mon, 19 Nov 2001 08:45:11 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Mon, 19 Nov 2001 08:45:11 -0800 X-Originating-IP: [209.195.212.67] From: "Paul '" To: Subject: Gus Max and pcm sound Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2001 11:41:10 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200 Message-ID: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 19 Nov 2001 16:45:11.0112 (UTC) FILETIME=[8DDA9C80:01C17119] Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Does anyone know what the correct syntax may be to get pcm sound working with my gus max? i had breifly gotten voxware support working with device snd0 device gus at isa? 0x220 irq 11 drq 1 or something very similar.. but it would detect as a gus pnp and work on irq 10. whenever i try device pcm device gusc0 at isa? 0x220 irq 11 drq 1 or various other combinations (irq's, flags, so on) the process crashes and reboots my box. Mine is not much different than some that I've seen. Unfortunately I haven't seen a solution. I'm willing to start digging in the sound code if I can get some pointers about where to start (I've done FreeBSD kernel tinkering before, but not where device drivers were involved). In short, the sound card works fine (AFAICT) when playing, but I get a failure when trying to record. Specifically, when I try: $ cat /dev/dsp >test.wav I get the following back from cat: cat: /dev/dsp: Invalid argument and I get this on the console: pcm0: record interrupt timeout, channel dead I'm running 4-STABLE from yesterday. The sound is integrated on my motherboard, and gives the following at boot: pcm0: port 0xb400-0xb43f irq 5 at device 5.0 on pci2 Curiously enough, ecasound doesn't cause the console error message when I try to record using: ecasound -i /dev/dsp -o test.wav but instead just records silence. Another interesting fact: if I set the KDE artsd to use full duplex, then artsd seems to enter an infinite loop, hogging the CPU and not responding. Any suggestions? Unfortuntly TV-out on video cards has to be "protected" with Macrovision. Macrovision does not allow video card manufacturers to release the specs for the TV-out portion of their cards generally. I know Matrox has released a binary only utility that supposedly allows you to run TV-out on the Gxxx line, but I don't think ATI has followed suit. One thing you might want to try is just plugging in your TV before booting your computer. On my G200 this causes the card to automatically initalize the TV-out at startup. -- \ |_ _|__ __|_ \ __| Jason Andresen jandrese@mitre.org |\/ | | | / _| Network and Distributed Systems Engineer _| _|___| _| _|_\___| Office: 703-883-7755 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Tue Nov 20 9:30:26 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from bunrab.catwhisker.org (adsl-63-193-123-122.dsl.snfc21.pacbell.net [63.193.123.122]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 588D537B416; Tue, 20 Nov 2001 09:30:21 -0800 (PST) Received: (from david@localhost) by bunrab.catwhisker.org (8.11.6/8.11.6) id fAKHUK256146; Tue, 20 Nov 2001 09:30:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from david) Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 09:30:20 -0800 (PST) From: David Wolfskill Message-Id: <200111201730.fAKHUK256146@bunrab.catwhisker.org> Subject: Re: makeing a DVD player from a laptop Cc: mobile@FreeBSD.ORG, multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <3BFA8DB2.DD68DC2A@mitre.org> Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 12:06:58 -0500 >From: Jason Andresen >> I have a laptop with a DVD-drive and one of the ATI video cards with a >> video output. Well, I have been able to display my X server's window(s) on TV, and the video card on my laptop is an ATI Rage Mobility. I was, however, unable to display on both the TV & the LCD panel at the same time. (Running XFree86-4.) And my spouse, who has a slightly updated version of my laptop, but which is only running "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" was able to play a DVD on her machine, but when she tried to direct the output to TV, everthing displayed just fine, except for the window where the image from the DVD was: it remained black. >One thing you might want to try is just plugging in your TV before >booting your computer. I found that I could connect the TV while the machine was up, but I needed to use a sequence of keyboard chords, such as Fn+F7 and Fn+F8 a few times. Cheers, david -- David H. The DVD software is writing directly to video memory (kinda) you can only have it appear in one place. In Windows this is your primary monitor (it's adjustable in the control panel, although the ATI control panel is slightly confusing on this). If she switches the primay to the TV-out, then the image should appear on the TV (although the box on the LCD will be black). > >One thing you might want to try is just plugging in your TV before > >booting your computer. Special video card for TV out? Cards that use the Brooktree harware work. See the bktr man page to get a list of cards that use that. It even supports some of the remotes. If you want output to go to a TV, you'll need a video card that outputs to the TV. I don't know of one of those that's supported by FreeBSD. The ATI cards can be used if you install Windows and configure them for video out. They'll stay in that mode when you boot FreeBSD and run X. Adding more drives (on separate controllers if you're using IDE) will help if the recording software you use can interleave frames between files. A sound card that pcm supports for recording is also required. > 3. What kernel options do I need? See the manual pages for the hardware you're using. > 4. What userland software do I need? I use fxtv. That lets you watch and record the TV. I'm not sure about a player for raw video, but that's what would work best if you've got the disk space. fxtv can automatically convert to a variety of formats, so you can use any player that supports that format. There are two things missing. One is the software to provide a reasonable UI for the VCR you've created. That would include something to record and store a show, as well as something to list recorded shows and play them back. The biggie is the scheduling magic that Tivo provides. Given an internet connection and an account on something like zap2it, you could do that. If that software exists, I haven't found it yet. http://www.mired.org/home/mwm/ Q: How do you make the gods laugh? A: Tell them your plans. Btw, audio/x-mpegurl and video/vnd.mpegurl are now in apaches default mime.types file. And the video/vnd.mpegurl extension mxu is eaten without errors by newer Windows Media Players. Best, H.
