In my case, I was still having abysmal throughput with Drive Image 5.0, even though the DOS copy command was (finally!) able to transfer data quickly. I was able to fix this using a buffer size of 4096 (8192 did not work), such as (in smb.conf): socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=4096 (I should have tried, but did not, increasing SO_RCVBUF to locate the threshold where the throughput drops.) -- Darryl Okahata darrylo@soco.agilent.com DISCLAIMER: this message is the author's personal opinion and does not constitute the support, opinion, or policy of Agilent Technologies, or of the little green men that have been following him all day. Maybe this is completely unrelated, but I've seen gzip report "broken pipe" when extracting .tar.gz files like "gzip -dc foo.tar.gz | tar xf -". This happened to me on recently updated machines, so my guess is that something must have changed in gzip/gunzip. By the way, the exracted files are perfectly OK and complete, so it seems to be just cosmetic, apart from the exit code that indicates failure (which is a lie). Recently I've installed a snapshot of FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE. While making custom kernel I noticed that no one part of documentation says that ed(4) now requires device miibus. I keep one some of my machines STABLE using cvsup and read /usr/src/UPDATING, so I quickly detected that I forgot to add miibus when compilation of my custom kernel failed. However, there is no UPDATING when user installs only kernel sources, LINT does not mention that ed(4) depends of miibus and even ed(4) man page does not do so. I think one of the fears that many organizations have is that they cannot get support for Open Source systems as easily as they can get it for Windows. Yes, there are many consultants out there and many great resources on the net for FreeBSD and LINUX. But this type of self support doesnt always work for every organization out there. With Microsoft, if you have a problem you can buy your way out of it with a phone call and a credit card. So if your MS-SQL server is crashing and you dont know why, for $250 they will fix it. For a lot of organizations this type of support is very important. Whether its right, efficient or the best way to approach the problem is another issue-- but it is a common sentiment I have come across with many of the hundreds of clients I have dealt with in our little corner of the world. ---Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Tancsa, tel +1 519 651 3400 Sentex Communications, mike@sentex.net Providing Internet since 1994 www.sentex.net Cambridge, Ontario Canada www.sentex.net/mike To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Sun Oct 7 17:15:57 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from warez.scriptkiddie.org (uswest-dsl-142-38.cortland.com [209.162.142.38]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AC18137B405 for ; Sun, 7 Oct 2001 17:15:53 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [192.168.69.11] (unknown [192.168.69.11]) by warez.scriptkiddie.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35E8F62D01; Sun, 7 Oct 2001 17:15:53 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 7 Oct 2001 17:16:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Lamont Granquist To: Cc: Evan Sarmiento Subject: Re: FreeBSD and Active Directory In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20011007170055.Q6509-100000@coredump.scriptkiddie.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG On Sun, 7 Oct 2001 uid0@catastrophe.net wrote: > On or about Oct 7, 2001 at 15:17 [-0400] Evan Sarmiento proclaimed: > ; I have indeed taken it to his superior, which is the Systems [...] > Unfortunately, you've just put yourself in a situation that makes your life > more difficult than it was to be. It doesn't sound particularly like this guy is one to worry about having his trust. It does put you in a situation where you need to worry about coming into future conflict with him. If you were ever thinking of doing any security or networking investigation on this network you better think again. Just don't do anything out of the ordinary on his network and if he tries to blame some network outage on you, make sure to patiently and resposibly take the issue up with his superior again. Sometime between 1-4 years from now you'll be out of this school and won't have to deal with him (on the other hand, he's stuck with the impression of him that you've made with his superior for as long as he's at this job =) > Candidly, I hate Novell and Microsoft products as they're crap. The thing is that while there is a business need for Microsoft and Novell, and there could even be a business need for homogenous networks, these kinds of policies have no place in an education institution. If anything in an educational institution there is a better (albeit still flawed) argument that closed source operating systems should be banned from the network in favor of open source ones. This administrator needs to go find himself a small office somewhere where he can implement his policies. Someone's law office or an insurance agency would be much more amenable to these kinds of policies. In an educational institution he is instead completely out of touch with the needs of his clients. Also, chances are good that this may be due to a problem with memory allocation in -stable. orm0:

When I attempt to use static_routes in /etc/rc.conf I = get an error message indicating an invalid argument.  I am using a = private netid and the gateway is on my internal network.  I have a = default gateway pointing to my external interface.  After the = system starts and I do a 'route add -net netid gateway' it works = fine.:

static_routes=3D"route_whatever"
route_whatever=3D"-net netid = gateway"

The errors I get are as follows:

route : writing to routing socket : Invalid = argument
add net : Invalid argument

I have looked everywhere I can think of to find an = answer to what might be causing this and still don't have a = clue.

If anyone else knows I could sure use some = advice!

This might well fix it, but my ThinkPad works quite well with PCI interrupt routing. This explains why it's in polling mode. I'd try removing the hw.pcic.* items and adding the machdep.pccard.mem_start="0xd0000" or sysctl -w machdep.pccard.mem_start:0xd0000 I suspect that this will fix it and will free up an IRQ for you as all PCMCIA cards and the controller will share a single interrupt. Recently I upgraded my good FreeBSD = server from=20 3.5-STABLE to 4.4-STABLE and

Before upgrading I never have had unexpected kernel panics = - now=20 the box

I suspects the new ata-driver = since the=20 panics seem to happened when there

The panic could = look like=20 this - here stangely in an inactive RealServer
(but seem to happen in = any=20 running process not nesserily the one causing=20 the
diskactivity):

Nice joke. :-) Much of the release process is I/O-bound, such as checking out all the sources and running installworld. A fast disk (or better yet, multiple fast disks) will help more than a fast processor. It takes about 3 hours on my Athlon-850 with a (not so fast) IDE disk, _including_ ports and docs, but with a specially optimized release makefile. Just one more question: You said to put disc1 in a directory called FreeBSD. Mt question is: where do I put the disc2 contents: in some directory or in the root of cdrom? This is an excerpt from the script that I use to make the "combi" disc tree (CWD is $CHROOT/R/cdrom), maybe this gives you an idea: echo "" echo "Creating \"combi\" cdrom." mkdir -p combi/FreeBSD echo "Hardlinking dist files ..." (cd disc1; find . -depth -print | cpio -dumpl ../combi/FreeBSD) ln combi/FreeBSD/kernel combi echo "Hardlinking live files ... (this will take a while)" (cd disc2; find . -depth -print | cpio -dumpl ../combi) echo "Creating filename.txt ..." (cd combi; make_filename.txt) echo "Done." Then perform the usual steps to make a bootable ISO image (see /usr/share/examples/work/makecdfs.sh for an example). You might also want to grab the "XF86336" and "tools" directories from some FTP site and add them to the CD. Maybe you remember my several postings in the past, I found out some strange things happening to sshd when migrating from FBSD 4.3 to 4.4. Now I have results, and results I can reproduce! But first I will explain the history. In the early days, before FreeBSD went towards 4.4-RC2, sshd worked perfectly on our systems. SSH is on all systems started in the normal, recommended way by the /etc/rc.conf.local config file. The first symptomes were that sshd stated after reboot or not, while moving tighter towards 4.4-RELEASE and now to 4.4-STABLE, sshd never started after rebooting, it always reports this error in thelog: Oct 12 22:23:25 klima sshd[289]: fatal: rsa_generate_private_key: key generation failed. The only way to start sshd was to telnet to the appropriate host and start the daemon manually. And this manual start does not produce any problem! The I started sshd via rc.local - not problem. It seems, that it depends on __when__ sshd starts in the rc-triggered startup process. I administer at this moment a core of four servers around here: three SMP machines, one UP machine. The failing start of sshd is watched on two SMP machines - both systems has Pentium PIII Coppermines! The other SMP system has two older PII CPUs. The UP machine is based on an Athlon TBird 850. Today I tryed to find out what the difference could be between the SMP machined that fail, the one MP machine that fails not and the UP system. Well, the ENABLE_SSE switch in the kernel causes the problems in conjunction with a real SSE capable Intel PIII CPU! I have no chance to test this on an PIII/SSE UP machine, but on both SMP machines using PIII and enabled SSE switch in kernel sshd is not starting with the normal rc script, but it starts the normal way if ENABLE_SSE is commented out! On the PII box, this switch has no effect. This is the same on the UP machine. ENABLE_SSE gives us several performance benefits (we use PGI and Lahey Linux Fortran and they seem to run about several percent faster on boxes with enabled SSE, doing scientific calculations) and I do not want to miss it. It is curious that the starting order of sshd is depend whether sshd starts or not. Maybe someone capable to do that should start sshd later in rc. Please, someone out there should test and confirm my experiences and if it is not SSE specific (but I presume it's a fact), I have to look for other problems within my configuartions (but this is logicaly very unlikely ...). Could anyone test this with an PIII UP System? Thank you for your help. -- MfG O. This sounds very much like it doesn't get enough entropy (randomness) right after reboot. When it is started later, more randomness has been accumulated, which then might be sufficient to generate the server RSA key. Do you have set "rand_irqs" to reasonable values in your /etc/rc.conf? The occurence of IRQs are used, among other things, to feed entropy to /dev/random and /dev/urandom. Try changing the values, maybe it helps. Note that the allocation of IRQs on an SMP/APIC machine is much different from a UP machine. This might be the reason why the problem does not occur on UP boxes. However, I have no idea what the SSE setting could have to do with it. Yes (I recently bumped into something similar). You probably have something unresolved in your module (that is, you need some other module before this one). Check your syslog for stuff like: /kernel: link_elf: symbol blahblah undefined Then find that module (I used grep in /modules, there is probably some better way) and kldload it first. Succes !
