Well, in fact a quick look at x11-toolkits reveals that there are indeed a lot of options :-) My very humble opinion on some toolkits: GTK+ : It's written in C, it works pretty well, version 2.0 just came out. The obvious choice for people who prefer writing in C. I coded the Fish with it and I really like it. You can use Glade to create UIs. Motif: It's still a standard in some places. It has very good (and very expensive) tools for development, it's now semi-free, but it's real PITA to work with if you don't have some tool to help you (e.g. RapidApp) Forms: It has been discontinued, but it's a simple and easy to use toolkit. Lyx uses it. Comes with a form editor too. FLTK: A C++ toolkit, don't have any experience with it. Qt: Trolltech's famous C++ toolkit. IMHO, the best choise if you are into C++ programming, also comes with a forms editor. If you are going to use C, I'd recommend you GTK+, if you are going the C++ way I'd go for Qt. There are also C++ bindings for C++ (gtk--). Both libraries are pretty good. A number of FreeBSD users have reported good luck with the Protege 3480CT. I am not as sure about the IBM machine. FreeBSD will support much more of the hardware on this machine than Solaris will. In fact, there will not be an Intel port of Solaris 9 (they are re-focusing solely on SPARC). Unfortunately, the sound card and internal modem are cheap-proprietary devices that will only work with Windows. However, you can choose from any number of PCMCIA modems and network cards for your machine. #################################### 3.From: "M. Warner Losh" I know that the IBM x20 is a little better supported for the pccards that you can insert into it. There is an irda stack for freebsd, but no bluetooth one. There's great 802.11b support in FreeBSD. The portege has a few minor problems with using multiple cards at the same time. I have no experience with Solaris on intel, so I can't help you there. God knows what direction things are going. Java has some advantages and if you use Swing it's not that bad. There are some nice tools for java too. I've only used Forte, so I can't really give my advice in that. If you use java , you'll have portability and a OO design in your program. It really depends on what your needs are. The same applies to .net. Knowing java won't hurt, and, if you already know C++, it's not that different. Parts of the API resemble the NextStep API too. There's also a project (gcj) to make a java compiler that targets a specific cpu and generates native code. Don't know what the real advantage of that would be, but it's there. .Net gives you a choice of languages you can use. It really depends on what you want to program, wether you need platform independence or not, and what language you feel more comfortable with. If you want something that's not copyleft, look into IV Tools at http://www.vectaport.com/ivtools/ and if you also care to experiment with something with some interesting modern concepts but which stopped development before getting lots of widgets, etc., check out Fresco at http://www.eupedia.org/fresco.html (The introductory treatises and docs are well-written and interesting even if you ignore the code.) (I'm guessing that UNIX would be in a much better state if the X people had not stopped work on Fresco. We probably wouldn't have had most of the mostly wasteful competitions between CDE/GNOME/KDE and C/C++ and X11 toolkits. Or at least better competitions between better designs. And it would have been long ago available for M$Win/UNIX cross-platform application development. The experimental version has been since at least '98.) Why do I just feel that this is the start of a Language vs. Language war? Perhaps if you wrote it in a simple shell script you may get 400.2 per second. # mount_lamefs /dev/idiotusers /stupidppl # cd /stupidppl # ls -l | wc -l 25994876 # rm -rf * There.. no python needed.
