Then try: tomcatctl start Perhaps I should add an option that makes the script more verbose. I have no idea what the problem could be. Lemme know, and I'll try to fix this ASAP. I'm using the port with JDK 1.3.1 native as well... Ernst On Monday 04 February 2002 16:08, Thomas T. It's actually as simple as grepping for 1.4.5 and replacing it with 1.5.2, and updating the distfile checksum accordingly. There is a more proper suggestion for an www/orion-current port in the PR database. It needs work, where the larger chunk of the Makefile is placed in a pkg-install script. I was going to do this, Ernst, could you perhaps just commit a version of 1.4.5_8 with 1.4.5 replaced with 1.5.2? Version 1.4.5 is way old by now. No, it looks like you haven't allowed that in your policy file. Once you specify a security file, it will override all default permissions, so you need to explicitly grant it. The current port is based on the linux/ source tree (build environment) and it compiles cleanly, but the two major platform specific directories still need to be examined and then need to be appropriately glued to FreeBSD's pthread and signaling layer. It's pretty scary that such a sophisticate compiler is written in C++. I've got a pretty solid hold on what to do overall and I'll keep you folks updated. ;-) bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Feb 7 8:28:56 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mail.net2000.ch (mail.net2000.ch [62.2.252.229]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DBBEC37B41E for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2002 08:28:47 -0800 (PST) Received: from wireless-networks.com ([80.83.36.11]) by mail.net2000.ch (Netscape Messaging Server 3.5) with ESMTP id AAA7039; Thu, 7 Feb 2002 17:26:07 +0100 Message-ID: <3C62AC8B.5010800@wireless-networks.com> Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2002 17:34:19 +0100 From: Cedric Berger User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.8) Gecko/20020204 X-Accept-Language: en-us MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Bill Huey Cc: java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Back from the dead (status report) References: <20020207124001.GA1947@gnuppy.monkey.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Bill Huey wrote: >I took a 2-3 week break after burning out screwing with the light weight >process and signaling framework in HotSpot, but I'm working on it again >as of last night. > Great news! I thought that we had agreed to use the newly created bsd directories for this work. Please do not check in any more changes to the linux directories. If you want, simply copy your current sources from their current locations into the bsd directories and check them in that way. Also, please start using the bsd build system as it operates correctly, unless of course, you can demonstarte that it does not operate. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on the bsd system I set up for this purpose. /Joe To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Feb 7 21:44:34 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from gnuppy.monkey.org (wsip68-15-8-100.sd.sd.cox.net [68.15.8.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E214C37B404 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2002 21:44:27 -0800 (PST) Received: from billh by gnuppy.monkey.org with local (Exim 3.34 #1 (Debian)) id 16Z3pj-0000ub-00; Thu, 07 Feb 2002 21:44:27 -0800 Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2002 21:44:26 -0800 To: Joe Kelsey Cc: java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Back from the dead (status report) Message-ID: <20020208054426.GB3473@gnuppy.monkey.org> References: <20020207124001.GA1947@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15458.48462.282560.685742@zircon.zircon.seattle.wa.us> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <15458.48462.282560.685742@zircon.zircon.seattle.wa.us> User-Agent: Mutt/1.3.27i From: Bill Huey Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Thu, Feb 07, 2002 at 09:45:50AM -0800, Joe Kelsey wrote: > I thought that we had agreed to use the newly created bsd directories > for this work. I was going to originally use that work at your request, but after reviewing the solaris build environment, I decided that it wouldn't be an effective use of my time to do that kind of stuff since the changes would be tedious and it would distract me from the more core issues such as threading/signaling, weird high speed mutex and event call back code. The linux tree, as is, already fully compiles and I've got the platform specific changes largely mapped out in my head. So the functional engineering role change here is that I'd like for you to instead take my changes to the linux port and then refashion it into a bsd specific build system, which I will use for all development once that's finished. That would be consistent to your current role as a build system specialist in this group and it would remove the technical overlap between us currently in relation to HotSpot. ;-) I'm on a roll here and I don't want to stop the momentum which is understandable. bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Feb 7 21:58:25 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from gnuppy.monkey.org (wsip68-15-8-100.sd.sd.cox.net [68.15.8.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF31837B404 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2002 21:58:21 -0800 (PST) Received: from billh by gnuppy.monkey.org with local (Exim 3.34 #1 (Debian)) id 16Z42s-0000v5-00; Thu, 07 Feb 2002 21:58:02 -0800 Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2002 21:58:02 -0800 To: Cedric Berger Cc: java@FreeBSD.ORG, Bill Huey Subject: Re: Back from the dead (status report) Message-ID: <20020208055802.GC3473@gnuppy.monkey.org> References: <20020207124001.GA1947@gnuppy.monkey.org> <3C62AC8B.5010800@wireless-networks.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <3C62AC8B.5010800@wireless-networks.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.3.27i From: Bill Huey Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Thu, Feb 07, 2002 at 05:34:19PM +0100, Cedric Berger wrote: > Great news! > Just a couple of questions: > - Have you solved the issues regarding FreeBSD pthread implementation? I haven't looked at the code, but the current work should also apply to 1.4 without conflict. We need NIO under FreeBSD and getting 1.4 is the only way of making that happen. There might be an unknown performance improvements when that stuff is sufficiently ported over to kqueue(), but that can't be exported/benched until the port is useable. The use of this kind of modern async IO mechanism might even get around some of the performance problems I've heard about concerning how the FreeBSD system deals with IO event processing. We can't be sure until this is tested out. > - Why basing the port on the Linux one, when the "Original" code is probaby > the solaris version? The linux is the closest and least trouble free of the build environments available. I got the entire thing compiling in a couple of mad rushes over a 2-3 day period, which is pretty good progress and certainly very comforting that I could duct tape that stuff so quickly. It immediately opens the possibility that other more in depth work can happen and I'd like to continue on that track. The platform/CPU specific directories are a pain in the ass, but I've got my head around it now, so it shouldn't be much of a problem to burn and slash the stuff that's not FreeBSD specific and replace it with stuff that's close to the Solaris light weight threading stuff. It is very close to FreeBSD's pthread system if you've got some tricky access to the per thread structure for internal use, so it's just matter of exporting that stuff so that HotSpot can use it properly. > Cedric That's all. ;-) bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Feb 7 22:20:18 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.deloitte.com.au (mx1.deloitte.com.au [210.11.17.9]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4F6937B41A for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2002 22:20:10 -0800 (PST) Received: from ausyd0490.deloitte.com.au (unverified) by mx1.deloitte.com.au (Content Technologies SMTPRS 4.1.5) with ESMTP id ; Fri, 8 Feb 2002 16:54:08 +1100 Received: by ausyd0490.deloitte.com.au with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id <1CHTSH55>; Fri, 8 Feb 2002 17:05:06 +1100 Message-ID: From: "Shevland, Joseph (AU - Hobart)" To: 'Bill Huey' Cc: "'java@FreeBSD.ORG'" Subject: RE: Back from the dead (status report) Date: Fri, 8 Feb 2002 17:05:05 +1100 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) Content-Type: multipart/alternative ; boundary="----_=_NextPart_001_01C1B066.8DEE6C10" Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This message is in MIME format. There was a two character change required in one file to make it work. The linux build environment is fundamentally broken and should be immediately abandoned. Note that I am not suggesting that you abandon your code fixes, merely the build environment. Anyone who knows makefiles will see the problem with the linux build environment and agree. Well, that's incorrect since the Linux environment is the most similar to FreeBSD because of the GCC compiler and the development tool chain. The solaris build environment has a numerous tweeks that need to be dealt with and it's a not a good track to follow because of this. > Also, there has been no discussion of what exactly you are doing in the > code base. Uh, this is one of those cases where it's probably easier to code and commit then it is to explain. Then some kind of draft will be available for review. I'm not trying to be difficult as much as I'd like to keep doing what I'm doing without external interference. If you have a specific question about the code tree we can talk about it on a more private list. > /Joe bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri Feb 8 16:57:35 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mail.rpi.edu (mail.rpi.edu [128.113.22.40]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9273B37B417 for ; Fri, 8 Feb 2002 16:57:31 -0800 (PST) Received: from [128.113.24.47] (gilead.acs.rpi.edu [128.113.24.47]) by mail.rpi.edu (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id g190u9p65590; Fri, 8 Feb 2002 19:56:09 -0500 Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Sender: drosih@mail.rpi.edu Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <20020208223905.GA2688@gnuppy.monkey.org> References: <20020207124001.GA1947@gnuppy.monkey.org> <3C62AC8B.5010800@wireless-networks.com> <20020208055802.GC3473@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15460.3857.467174.362497@zircon.zircon.seattle.wa.us> <20020208223905.GA2688@gnuppy.monkey.org> Date: Fri, 8 Feb 2002 19:56:08 -0500 To: Bill Huey , Joe Kelsey From: Garance A Drosihn Subject: Re: Back from the dead (status report) Cc: java@FreeBSD.ORG Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.3 (www dot roaringpenguin dot com slash mimedefang) Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org At 2:39 PM -0800 2/8/02, Bill Huey wrote: >On Fri, Feb 08, 2002 at 09:46:57AM -0800, Joe Kelsey wrote: > > Also, there has been no discussion of what exactly you are doing > > in the code base. It is almost always easier to "code and commit" than to explain. However, that doesn't always produce the best results... >Then some kind of draft will be available for review. Well, certainly many people will be excited to see more progress happening in the freebsd-java world. I just hope that when you're done, you won't be hit by a lot of requests for things which would have been easier to handle now. Me, I really *am* happy to see things happening on the java front, so I don't want to sound like I'm complaining about anything. It's just that I also suspect it would be better to hear a bit more about what you hope to do before you have spent the effort to do it. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@eclipse.acs.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri Feb 8 19:25:16 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from gnuppy.monkey.org (wsip68-15-8-100.sd.sd.cox.net [68.15.8.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EBF4337B41B for ; Fri, 8 Feb 2002 19:25:11 -0800 (PST) Received: from billh by gnuppy.monkey.org with local (Exim 3.34 #1 (Debian)) id 16ZO8M-00010b-00; Fri, 08 Feb 2002 19:25:02 -0800 Date: Fri, 8 Feb 2002 19:24:57 -0800 To: Garance A Drosihn Cc: Joe Kelsey , java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Back from the dead (status report) Message-ID: <20020209032457.GA3858@gnuppy.monkey.org> References: <20020207124001.GA1947@gnuppy.monkey.org> <3C62AC8B.5010800@wireless-networks.com> <20020208055802.GC3473@gnuppy.monkey.org> <15460.3857.467174.362497@zircon.zircon.seattle.wa.us> <20020208223905.GA2688@gnuppy.monkey.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: User-Agent: Mutt/1.3.27i From: Bill Huey Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, Feb 08, 2002 at 07:56:08PM -0500, Garance A Drosihn wrote: > Me, I really *am* happy to see things happening on the java front, > so I don't want to sound like I'm complaining about anything. Folks are going to have to trust that I know what I'm doing and not interfere at this point. It's too complicated to really articulate publically and I'm kind of being badgered/micromanaged right now which is rather annoying. If I run into a blockage, then I'll ask the relevant folks for help and I'm very good about that kind of communication. But the only people that can help me are folks that know the internals of pthreads (Dan Eischen and the like) and people that are willing to learn about the internals of HotSpot threading across all three platforms (Win32, Solaris with it's LWP implementation and Linux). bill To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Feb 9 15:38:42 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from plato.webprogrammers.net (plato.webprogrammers.net [204.221.75.12]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0566D37B41A; Sat, 9 Feb 2002 15:38:37 -0800 (PST) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by plato.webprogrammers.net (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g19NbTP26655; Sat, 9 Feb 2002 17:37:29 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from jstepka@webprogrammers.net) X-Authentication-Warning: plato.webprogrammers.net: nobody set sender to jstepka@webprogrammers.net using -f Received: from 24.240.42.215 (SquirrelMail authenticated user jstepka) by mail.webprogrammers.net with HTTP; Sat, 9 Feb 2002 17:37:29 -0600 (CST) Message-ID: <2177.24.240.42.215.1013297849.squirrel@mail.webprogrammers.net> Date: Sat, 9 Feb 2002 17:37:29 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: Port updated: www/orion (again) From: "Justen Stepka" To: In-Reply-To: <200202071053.g17ArSF19378@zaphod.euronet.nl> References: <200202071053.g17ArSF19378@zaphod.euronet.nl> X-Priority: 3 Importance: Normal X-MSMail-Priority: Normal Cc: Reply-To: jstepka@webprogrammers.net X-Mailer: SquirrelMail (version 1.2.4) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Ernst de Haan said: > Upgraded the port to 1.5.2 now. > > Ernst > > > On Monday 04 February 2002 20:42, Justen Stepka wrote: >> Ernst de Haan said: >> > Hi all, >> > >> > Just upgraded www/orion to 1.4.5_8.
