Apache didn't give me too much trouble for simple stuff, but for more complicated stuff like cgi's and what not, do be prepared to read the manual 4 or 5 times, check permissions, reconfigure and rinse repeat as necessary. (tip: Do make a backup config copy of the config file) As for samba, in my experience, most misery is caused by win9x clients. I've not had any serious issues with NT clients, and the samba docco is really extensive and included step by step trouble shooting instructions should shit happen... :) Do be prepared to burn retina while reading said extensive docco. (which lives in /usr/local/share/doc/samba, IIRC) Go forth and conquer... *snip* _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Any how-to on upgrading would be appreciated! I prefer upgrading from source, and the handbook has lots of info on this. If you don't want to build from source, you can use your current sysinstall if you first set the correct release name in the options screen. Ask this question on -questions as well. You find many more people there with experience in upgrading. There may be numerous tarpits they can help you avoid that we newbies have never encountered simply because we're newbies. When viewing the CD contents and comparing them with the table on page 27 & 28 of the manual, I found that the View.exe file and the Setup.exe along with the Install.exe files were missing from the CD. There were numerous other files missing from the CD that the table showed. I returned the software to the store and when they looked at another box, they found the same problem. Needless to say, I was very disappointed that I had spent all that time and effort and never got off the ground. (Thank goodness the Patriots won the Super Bowl that night). I am at this point completely disillusioned with FreeBSD. I hope that someone takes the time to look into the possibility that other stores may have been delivered the same packages. However, I have never had a problem with any of the FreeBSD "normal" 4-CD sets. However, I seem to recall an issue about the view.exe, setup.exe and install.exe files being the property of Walnut Creek CDROM. The 4.2 Power Pack was not a Walnut Creek release, but a BSDi release. I suspect that the documentation didn't get updated as thoroughly as the CDs. Slackware Linux had the same problem. These files are *not* required to install FreeBSD. They are not a part of the official FreeBSD release. The Handbook will give you all the installation instruction you will need. > I am at this point completely disillusioned with FreeBSD. > I hope that someone takes the time to look into the possibility > that other stores may have been delivered the same packages. Don't be disillusioned over something so trivial. The Power Pack was originally a Walnut Creek packaging, and not an official FreeBSD project. FreeBSD had nothing to do with it. I recently got a copy (or more precisely got the time to read my copy), and I've found it quite useful. Admittedly, I've been playing with FreeBSD for about a year and a half now, but I wouldn't consider myself an advanced user. The nice thing about the CNG is that Mittelstadt (sp?) explains a lot of the whys and wherefores of the system. This has been somewhat more helpful to me than some other books. I'm also pretty fond of The Complete FreeBSD (Lehey). I've heard good things about Annelise Anderson's book, but haven't picked it up. HTH Marci ===== Marriage, n. First, do you have a cd burner or know someone who does? - find a high speed Internet connection, go here. www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/mirrors-ftp.html Notice at the top of the page you are 'in' the FreeBSD Handbook. The ftp BSD link (about 4 inches down the page from the top) will take you to where you can download FreeBSD for nothing. follow ISO's , then ISO 386 then 4.5 - here click on the install iso. you will be prompted to download the iso Try to create a folder ahead of time to hold the iso - check your free space the iso is quite large 600+ Megs there is plenty contained in this one iso, it will give you a fully functional machine If you don't have DSL or Cable or don't know anyone who does Go here http://www.bsdmall.com/ and buy a cd set. These are the same iso images as from the web. Most important -- read the FreeBSD Handbook ( from the link above) at least the first 3 chapters. The networking code of FreeBSD is similar to that of 4.4BSD (that the book describes). The src/sys/net, src/sys/netinet and src/sys/sys directories are those that you'll be mostly interested to. Searching to find things with cvsweb is an awful thing though. Having a local copy of the sources, on a FreeBSD installation will help you a lot. I use a local copy of the sources and find/grep combinations to look for files where a function is defined or used. For instance, to look at the headers to find which one defines the ip_output() function (in case you forget where it's defined), you can use the simple (but kind of slow) command: $ find /usr/src/sys -type f -name '*.h' | xargs grep -n ip_output - Giorgos To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Feb 6 13:47:34 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from psmtp2.dnsg.net (psmtp2.dnsg.net [193.168.128.42]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 63A8937B419 for ; Wed, 6 Feb 2002 13:47:29 -0800 (PST) Received: (qmail 7522 invoked from network); 6 Feb 2002 22:47:28 +0100 Received: from frnk-3e3574eb.pool.mediaways.net (HELO there) (62.53.116.235) by psmtp2.dnsg.net with SMTP; 6 Feb 2002 22:47:28 +0100 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-15" From: Heiko Scheib To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Official 4 CDROM-Set - ISO-IMAGES lacking lot of software ??? He claims, that the content is identical with the iso images on the ftp-server. I do belive that because I frequently buy CDs from him and never had any problems. Now I`m suffering a serious disappointment, because the included PACKAGES are only a very small part of what is shown in the packages-tree of the ftp-server. For example kdenetwork, XT and XP and dozens (no apparently hundreds) of packages are only listed as packages on the ftp-server. They are not included in the iso-images and therefore in the 4 cdrom-set. I would have to load them down (with my very slow connection). IS THIS RIGHT OR IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY CD-SET? There's no way the 4 CD set can contain all of the packages. There's simply not enough room. If you have the ISO images from -4.5, then most of the KDE stuff will be missing, due to an unfortunate series of miscommunications. kdelibs and kdebase will still be there, but the other stuff needs to be downloaded separately. This *may* get corrected on some distributors' sets, but it's still too early to know. You shouldn't have any problems with KDE on earlier releases. I don't know anything about XT and XP. If the Handbook is confusing (section 3.4), then the following might help: http://www.daemonnews.org/199811/newbies.html This is an article about mounting and using floppies, but most of the principles apply to mounting other file systems, such as the CDROM or a Windows/DOS partition. In a nutshell, here is the "why" of mounting. Back in the days of the dinosaurs (even before PDP-11's) harddrives and tape drives were very expensive and very big. You didn't insert a floppy or CD, you physically mounted a platter or tape spool. "mount" was a very appropriate name. You also needed to tell the computer somehow that you had changed the platter or spool. Nowadays the drives are much, much smaller and hold much, much more information, but the process is still the same. Every operating system of any sophistication has mount and unmount, or analogous actions. Windows still does this, but it does it for you automatically. There is a daemon program for FreeBDS that will do this automatically as well, but it isn't the easiest thing to set up (although it isn't rocket science either). Here's how you mount under FreeBSD (and all other unices). You take a filesystem (CD, floppy, harddrive partition) and splice it into the Grand Unified Directory Hiearchy. The filesystem is represented by a device (/dev/acd0c) and the splicing point is the directory it gets mounted at. mount also needs to know what kind of filesystem it is (native freebsd, native windows, CDROM iso9660 format, etc). You can also pass it miscellaneous options, such as read-only. Now that you know the "why", the "how" of the Handbook should be understandable. Hope this helps, David To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Thu Feb 7 19:24:18 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from idscc05.onewest.net (idscc05.onewest.net [199.104.81.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 57A6F37B404 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2002 19:24:12 -0800 (PST) Received: from terry (du212.idfl-223.onewest.net [12.7.223.212] (may be forged)) by idscc05.onewest.net (8.12.0/8.12.0) with SMTP id g183K3K8026408 for ; Thu, 7 Feb 2002 20:20:03 -0700 Message-ID: <001101c1b057$a819f000$0400a8c0@terry> From: "Terry Thomas" To: References: <20020207180208.18401.h011.c021.wm@mail.dignons.com.criticalpath.net> Subject: Re: mount faq Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2002 20:18:25 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Are you just trying to mount a floppy so you can access it... mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt then cd /mnt to ls, cp , mv, etc. make sure you umount it other than do a search here... http://groups.google.com/groups?group=mailing.freebsd.questions or here is the freebsd site with mail archives and doc search... http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html Have fun, freebsd is great! Are you running XFree86 4.x or 3.3.6? The X wrapper is only for 4.0 and higher. You don't ever run the wrapper. It is executed automatically. you just have startx fire up KDE in the normal fashion with the contents of .xinitrc. (I run Gnome, so I don't remember the command to start kde.) The wrapper is not used/needed for xdm (and, I assume, kdm) logins. It is specific to startx. R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. " Now, I was told by several freebsd people (who know a hell of a lot more than I) that upgrading from 3.x to 4.x using binary snapshots is cake and can be done safely and easily remotely, without console access. My problem is that I can't find information regarding this.... whatsoever. Everywhere I look it just has the same line from a mirror of the FAQ. Does anyone have step-by-step instructions for upgrading 3.x (or 3.4-REL specifically) to the latest 4.x.....remotely/safely/with-minimal-downtime? Your best bet is probably to install to a second box (as similar as possible to the remote box), set everything up, and then replace the disk of the remote machine with the new disk. I feel a lot safer when doing remote upgrades this way, and it only requires a single reboot to swap disks :) Giorgos Keramidas FreeBSD Documentation Project keramida@{freebsd.org,ceid.upatras.gr} http://www.FreeBSD.org/docproj/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Sat Feb 9 15:31: 9 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from smtp03.mrf.mail.rcn.net (smtp03.mrf.mail.rcn.net [207.172.4.62]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DB6BD37B404 for ; Sat, 9 Feb 2002 15:31:07 -0800 (PST) Received: from 208-58-224-6.s6.tnt1.clmb.md.dialup.rcn.com ([208.58.224.6] helo=ljgms2k) by smtp03.mrf.mail.rcn.net with smtp (Exim 3.33 #10) id 16ZgxW-0000qu-00 for freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org; Sat, 09 Feb 2002 18:31:07 -0500 Message-ID: <000501c1b1c1$ee6d4eb0$06e03ad0@ljgms2k> From: "leegold" To: Subject: upgrading X has been nasty Date: Sat, 9 Feb 2002 18:30:56 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4522.1200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4522.1200 Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Do you think you could take a look at my x problem on the questions mail list? Imo, I've really been busting chops trying to figure out what deinstall does (I don't even have a man pg for it but see it mentioned as a command(?), what delete_pkg does, what setnev FORCE_PKG_REGISTER does (an env. variable?), what the heck was going w/the ports, then when it's installed it called apparently a pakage(?) It's way complicated imo.
