This works for RedHat as they use rsync only, will cvsup save the permissions the same way as rsync does for us that use cvsup for mirroring? If I remember correctly the answer to that question is no, so that would make this impossible. /Oli -- Olafur Osvaldsson Systems Administrator Internet a Islandi hf. However, I'm not sure if a decision was ever made. Is > this still a reasonable goal? Can it be done using unix file > permissions? Hello, I think that it would be great thing, too. However, there are some issues with permissions. Imagine ftp-master.cz on the way ftp-master =cvsup=> ftp-master.cz =rsync/cvsup=> ftp.cz with some security considerations, where I want that service server (cvsupd or rsync --daemon) could not in any case overwrite or corrupt data storage maintained by cvsup client mirroring from ftp-master. There are rw-rw-r-- permissions on ftp-master. Cvsup can just exactly mirror the permissions (if not, please correct me! - rsync is probably the same category), so I have on ftp-master.cz rw-rw-r-- too and I have to use different user and different group for cvsupd/rsync --daemon, than for cvsup client mirroring from ftp-master. In this case, chmod o-rx and/or chmod go-rx on ftp-master means, that ftp-master.cz can (I hope :o) still download files, but it is impossible to service them to the primary ftp servers. If there are rw-r--r-- permissions, which are probably unacceptable on ftp-master, or if there is possibility to reduce permissions from rw-rw-r-- to rw-r--r-- with cvsup (rsync) method, I can have rw-r--r-- on ftp-master.cz, so I can have different users for cvsup client and cvsupd/rsync --daemon and just one common group, so permissions for others are free subject to change, how to control access to the files on the Tier-1 mirrors, when they are configured in the way, that ftp/... service servers can give files just in case there is o=r bit set. > If so, how do we propagate out the file permission change > quickly? I think there is just one safe way without some push-programming (ftp-master sends some information, that mirrors would start mirroring): Say, that permissions are released at exact time, so everybody can plan start of mirror update process. Or do you want self-updating cvsup mirroring chain, where one of files is repeatedly executed on mirror sites? ... :o) PS: Maybe it would help, when umask=n is not ignored in preserve case: umask=n Causes cvsup to use a umask value of n (an octal number) when updating the files in the collection. This option is ignored if preserve is specified. ??? -- Rudolf Cejka http://www.fit.vutbr.cz/~cejkar Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Information Technology Bozetechova 2, 612 66 Brno, Czech Republic From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 2 14:43:25 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8AB9B37B41D; Mon, 2 Jun 2003 14:43:25 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns1.xcllnt.net (209-128-86-226.BAYAREA.NET [209.128.86.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 69B0443F3F; Mon, 2 Jun 2003 14:43:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from marcel@xcllnt.net) Received: from dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net [192.168.4.201]) by ns1.xcllnt.net (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h52LhOwk003856; Mon, 2 Jun 2003 14:43:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from marcel@piii.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: from dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h52LhOfA001403; Mon, 2 Jun 2003 14:43:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from marcel@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: (from marcel@localhost) by dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h52LhNA3001402; Mon, 2 Jun 2003 14:43:23 -0700 (PDT) Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2003 14:43:23 -0700 From: Marcel Moolenaar To: hubs@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <20030602214323.GA1345@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.4i cc: ia64@FreeBSD.org Subject: 5.1-RC1 for ia64 in the works X-BeenThere: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Distributions Hubs: mail sup ftp List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2003 21:43:26 -0000 Gang, This is an advance notice that ia64 will be joining the 5.1-RC1 circus if all goes well. A release is currently being built and I expect it to be finished this evening. This means that if all goes well, I can have the ISOs uploaded some time tomorrow. As for ia64 packages: the machines that build the packages lock up every couple of hours for reasons yet unknown. Unless Kris decides differently: no packages. I'll send out a final notice when the ISOs are uploaded (to hubs@) or when I give up on it (to both hubs@ and ia64@). Whichever comes first. As for the contents: the ia64 release will come from the official 5.1 branch, with kernel patches applied. The patches will allow the release to be usable on both Intel and HP machines (among other things). Hello, am I the only one, who has problems with automatic cvsup update since your changes? Here is error from cvsup, which stops cvsup from data synchronization: Symlink FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5-current -> packages-5.1-release Updater failed: Cannot install "/usr/local/etc/cvsup/prefixes/FreeBSD-archive.all/FreeBSD/ports/i386/#cvs.cvsup-42024.384" to "/usr/local/etc/cvsup/prefixes/FreeBSD-archive.all/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5-current": Is a directory It seems that you have replaced packages-5-current directory to the symlink in a very short time? I think that this is the case which cvsup (and maybe rsync too) does not handle very well. Atleast on ftp-master.cz.FreeBSD.org I had to rm -r FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5-current by hand. Please, who is responsible about ftp-master.FreeBSD.org hardware? Does anybody plan disk capacity upgrade on this server this/next year? We want to upgrade ftp.cz.FreeBSD.org this year and it would be great to know, what disk capacity we should buy and install. Sorry this is causing problems, but I didn't have much choice..as I reported earlier ftp-master does not have enough space available to hold 4 new sets of packages (about 15GB) in addition to what was already there. There are several large volumes sitting there that need to be cleared out for use as archive storage. I hope one of the ftp-master admins will find the time to do this soon. Alpha and sparc64 will happen over the next 2 days. We are scheduled to make the announcement and press release on Monday, June 9. So, it's time to decide on how to push out the bits to the mirrors without allowing public access, how to quickly grant public access, and what, if anything, should be done about BitTorrent. 1. Distributing to the mirrors. The easiest approach seems to be to use a permission setting of 0660 on the files and 0770 on the directories. However, this will exclude the second-tier mirrors that mirror off of others using anonymous access. What should be done about this? 2. Granting anonymous access. If I publish an exact time, will everyone be able to tweak their mirrors by hand? If not, will rsync'ing the permission change be fast enough and not eat up too much bandwidth? 3. BitTorrent. I personally like this idea. We only need a few mirrors to act as seeds. Once the release happens and people start using these seeds, they'll become seeds themselves and the load will quickly flatten out. However, it's up to you guys. Please let me know what you think as soon as possible. Well, it's thursday afternoon for me. I only work on the mirror workdays (well, I don't, anymore, but that's not really the point :). There is no time at all to go after BitTorrent, learn how to install and use it, configure it, and get ready for the mirroring before I leave for the weekend. Secondary mirrors should not be using anonymous access to begin with, if someone is providing access for those he should use a seperate rsync process with different permissions. > 3. BitTorrent. I don't know anything about BitTorrent but I don't think it is wise to be doing this with such short notice, probably is better to wait untill this release is behind us. /Oli -- Olafur Osvaldsson Systems Administrator Internet a Islandi hf. Hmm, I don't know how BitTrront works and has good performance for us. It seems we should continue the duscussion about this (and we should not use it for 5.1-R yet). Anyways, it is difficult to coordinate with mirror maintainers for new configuration/installation in few days. If 0770 dir can works, doing such for few days (for tier-1 mirrors) may work... -- Jun Kuriyama // IMG SRC, Inc. // FreeBSD Project From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jun 5 16:20:43 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 41E0337B401; Thu, 5 Jun 2003 16:20:43 -0700 (PDT) Received: from khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu [18.24.4.193]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7FADA43F3F; Thu, 5 Jun 2003 16:20:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wollman@khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu) Received: from khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (localhost [IPv6:::1]) by khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h55NKfjp026151 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=OK); Thu, 5 Jun 2003 19:20:41 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from wollman@khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu) Received: (from wollman@localhost) by khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h55NKekP026148; Thu, 5 Jun 2003 19:20:40 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from wollman) Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2003 19:20:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Garrett Wollman Message-Id: <200306052320.h55NKekP026148@khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu> To: Scott Long In-Reply-To: <3EDF7E79.3000501@freebsd.org> References: <3EDF7E79.3000501@freebsd.org> X-Spam-Score: -19.8 () IN_REP_TO,QUOTED_EMAIL_TEXT,REFERENCES,REPLY_WITH_QUOTES X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.33 (www . roaringpenguin . com / mimedefang) cc: re@freebsd.org cc: hubs@freebsd.org Subject: It's time for 5.1-R bits X-BeenThere: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Distributions Hubs: mail sup ftp List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 05 Jun 2003 23:20:43 -0000 < said: > 1. It only takes one box to get the ball rolling. I'm sure you can find a couple people to toss it up. I'd run with it Scott, even if you decide not to make it public in the official release. Just jump on irc and pass the word. It'll spread fast enough, and then you'll know how well it works for next time. -tbaur From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jun 5 21:52:56 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5971537B401 for ; Thu, 5 Jun 2003 21:52:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rwcrmhc52.attbi.com (rwcrmhc52.attbi.com [216.148.227.88]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B7F6343F93 for ; Thu, 5 Jun 2003 21:52:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from bmah@employees.org) Received: from bmah.dyndns.org (12-240-204-110.client.attbi.com[12.240.204.110]) by attbi.com (rwcrmhc52) with ESMTP id <2003060604525505200mtudae>; Fri, 6 Jun 2003 04:52:55 +0000 Received: from intruder.bmah.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by bmah.dyndns.org (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h564qt9c029154; Thu, 5 Jun 2003 21:52:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from bmah@intruder.bmah.org) Received: (from bmah@localhost) by intruder.bmah.org (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h564qtV1029153; Thu, 5 Jun 2003 21:52:55 -0700 (PDT) Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2003 21:52:54 -0700 From: "Bruce A. It seems well suited for transfering large hunks of stuff that don't change (such as *.iso files). It can handle directory hierarchies, but not if the files contained within might change. (I was thinking that our package trees might not work well with this, since we always need to tweak these with last-minute fixes.) 2. The tracker process (rendezvous point for the clients) needs to run somewhere. I'm not sure if a project-sanctioned torrent would need to have its own tracker or whether it's OK to use some existing tracker. Anyone know the convention for this? 3. Because there's no access control (well, none that I can see), using BT as a method for staging bits on mirrors (before a release) isn't ideal because anyone with the *.torrent files can download the *.iso files or whatever. I think it makes more sense to use it as a mechanism for distributing to end-users and mirrors after the release is announced. Should not. I have changed permissions, so that cvsup+ftpd/rsyncd/cvsupd all run in the same group, so people mirroring from ftp-master.cz.freebsd.org (including me on ftp.cz.FreeBSD.org) should be able to mirror all bits correctly. I hope you don't mind if I disagree. Actually I don't think "it's time". It would have been time for this a few weeks ago. Now it's a little late. > 1. Distributing to the mirrors. I'm using FTP to mirror from the master server (using omi), so any permission modes are ignored. However, it's up to you guys. I know zero about BitTorrent, and I think it's much too late now in the release process for 5.1 to introduce it. Especially because things tend to fail on the first try. ;-) Regards Oliver -- Oliver Fromme, secnetix GmbH & Co KG, Oettingenstr. 2, 80538 München Any opinions expressed in this message may be personal to the author and may not necessarily reflect the opinions of secnetix in any way. It looks like the chmod trick is working well. I apologize to the second-tier mirrors that cannot access the bits yet. If we keep this model, you'll have to work out arrangements with the first tier mirrors for special access. IMPORTANT: The official 5.1 announcement and press release will go out at 1000EDT (1400GMT). I'd like to unmask the release bits about an hour before the announcement, which would be 1300GMT 9-June-2003. Please set your at(1) jobs accordingly! Thanks a lot!
