While I'm sure that this will come as a disappointment to many, the simple truth is that there is no longer enough community interest nor developer interest to fix critical bugs and assist in the development of new features. We've struggled with this for several years, and it's time to set the proper expectations before we enter 5-STABLE. Being Tier-2 does not mean that Alpha support will actively be removed from the tree. It does, however, mean that ISO images might not be produced for upcoming releases, pre-compiled packages might not be produced and more (in fact, this already stopped several weeks ago), and future security advisories might not be issued for it. This only applies to FreeBSD 5.3 and beyond; existing alpha releases are still supported by the security team according to their schedule, and future 4.x erratas and releases will still support it also. Demotion is also not a terminal condition. If in the future there is an renewed interest and the existing problems can be fixed, it can be re-considered for tier-1. Alpha was a very important platform for FreeBSD. It paved the way both for 64-bit cleanliness and for being able to support multiple architectures. It was also a nice and refreshing architecture in a world of bland and hackish i386 systems. Thanks to Doug Rabson for porting to it in the first place and thanks to everyone who supported it afterwards. I'd intended to write up my experiences, but never quite got around to it. But basically, to get the binaries, I mounted the boot-only iso on box. There you'll find the "netboot" file as well as the kernel. Good luck! There you'll find the "netboot" file as well as the kernel. Thanks, thats exactly what I needed. I used vnconfig to mount the ISO and copy out the files that I needed. I regularly netboot netbsd install kernels on our DS10Ls and CS20s, so it was really just a matter of getting the loader files in place. I've not gotten it to boot on the DS10L, but a same request by a CS20 will get me further, both with varied results (I'll included below) I'd like to hear from folks running with more than 10 NFS clients with a single NFS server using a YP master with a couple of slaves regarding performance (mostly) and reliability. If you don't use NFS+YP, then don't bother ;-) You're system has probably been up for years... the few NetBSD machines that I have that don't use NFS run for as long as I let them. However, through NFS in there and you get to see funky behaviour. Speaking of which, did the darwin NFS fixes get introduced into FreeBSD? I didn't find a kernel with full symbols on the 'bootonly' ISO. On the DS10L .. now at first, you'd probably just assume this was a bootptab syntax error .. but its using the same netboot and layout as what the CS20 just tried to boot. The NetBSD install kern I use for 1.6.2 is also in the tftpboot directory so when I point to the NetBSD netboot file, the DS10L boots as expected. However, again with the same setup as the CS20, I get this: Server is on same subnet as client. .... bootstrap code read in base = 200000, image_start = 0, image_bytes = 363e0(222176) initializing HWRPB at 2000 initializing page table at 3ff2c000 initializing machine state setting affinity to the primary CPU jumping to bootstrap code Console: SRM firmware console VMS PAL rev: 0x1005300010162 OSF PAL rev: 0x100490002015c Switch to OSF PAL code succeeded. Do we already have a way for loading hints in case of netbooting? Otherwise the netbooting kernel needs hardcoded hints. AFAIK my last netbooting alpha was still 4.x so I never run into that problem myself. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 18 00:13:16 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0904C16A4CE for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 00:13:16 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail-in-03.arcor-online.net (mail-in-03.arcor-online.net [151.189.21.43]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37EAC43D53 for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 00:13:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mailnull@mips.inka.de) Received: from kemoauc.mips.inka.de (dsl-213-023-057-185.arcor-ip.net [213.23.57.185]) by mail-in-03.arcor-online.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id BCE5FC3F9D0 for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 02:13:04 +0200 (CEST) Received: from kemoauc.mips.inka.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) i5I0D4Se001074 for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 02:13:04 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from mailnull@kemoauc.mips.inka.de) Received: (from mailnull@localhost) by kemoauc.mips.inka.de (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i5I0D3Yd001073 for freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 02:13:03 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from mailnull) From: naddy@mips.inka.de (Christian Weisgerber) Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 00:13:02 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: Originator: naddy@mips.inka.de (Christian Weisgerber) To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: -CURRENT lockup X-BeenThere: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Alpha List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 00:13:16 -0000 Running "/usr/sbin/periodic daily" reliably locks up my PC164 with 5.2-CURRENT from June 13. I've not tried using the 4.x stuff, but its probably just to stick with 5.2.1 if we could get a net-bootable install kernel. There is a device.hints file, but I'm not sure that it does any good. After reviewing your original boot log it seems that you manualy booted the kernel - under normal conditions netboot should read his configuration including kernel and device.hints. Taking advise form another freebsder, I grabbed the boot-only ISO, copied the 'kernel' file and the 'netboot' file, thinking that was all I needed. When that didn't work, I cp -Rp'ed the mounted ISO into my tftpboot (bootp's dir) and tried that. So, netboot gets loaded, but it can not find a kernel unless I either do a boot kernel/kernel or boot ./kernel (if I place the kernel file in the current directory and rename the kernel directory). $ On host 10.0.0.1, which acts as the router, firewall, and general server, I've set up dhcp to do bootp. Add the line "allow bootp;" to /etc/dhcpd.conf, and add a section like the following: group { option broadcast-address 10.0.0.255; option domain-name "example.com"; option domain-name-servers 10.0.0.15, 10.0.0.16; option routers 10.0.0.1; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; host hostname.example.com { hardware ethernet 00:00:F8:f3:3F:88; fixed-address 10.0.0.46; option host-name "hostname"; filename "netboot"; option root-path "/local/freebsd-5.2-alpha-install"; next-server 10.0.0.1; } } Note that "next-server" parameter indicates the nfs server the client will contact to mount the filesystem. Make sure that the nfs server is enabled and /local is exported on host 10.0.0.1; to /etc/exports, add a line like: /local -alldirs -network 10.0.0.0/24 and in /local/freebsd-5.2-alpha-install, put the contacts of the boot-only iso. # ls /local/freebsd-5.2-alpha-install boot # ls /local/freebsd-5.2-alpha-install/boot boot defaults loader loader.help modules boot1 device.hints loader.4th loader.rc netboot cdboot kernel loader.conf mfsroot.gz support.4th Enable tftpd; uncomment the line for tftp in /etc/inetd.conf, and modify the directory specified, for example: tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/libexec/tftpd tftpd -l -s /local/tftpboot Copy the netboot file to the tftp directory. At this point, you should be ready to boot the alpha. Hope this gets you up and running. regards, Andrew From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 18 17:58:05 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5560A16A4CE for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:58:05 +0000 (GMT) Received: from egsner.cirr.com (egsner.cirr.com [192.67.63.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5B0143D49 for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:58:04 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from smj@egsner.cirr.com) Received: from egsner.cirr.com (smj@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by egsner.cirr.com (8.12.11/8.12.10/$Revision: 1.21 $) with ESMTP id i5IHvgiF016338; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 12:57:43 -0500 (CDT) Received: (from smj@localhost) by egsner.cirr.com (8.12.11/8.12.11) id i5IHvfUc007671; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 12:57:41 -0500 (CDT) From: "Stephen M. Sorry for my confusion and thanks!
