From: "fbsd_user" To: Cc: Subject: Re: kern/60790: IPFW loadable module is useless as released Date: Thu, 1 Jan 2004 14:37:23 -0500 You must have miss-read the problem description. The ipfw loadable module is useless as it's currently distributed with the FBSD operation system software. You need to correctly compile it with all the options and make it part of the new 5.2 version of FBSD when you release the next stable production 5.2 release. How does telling me to do my own kernel compile including IPFW fix this problem? This does not fix the problem for all the other users of the FBSD software. It has to be fixed at your end an made part of the next software release. It's not a good idea. People should be able to add their own variables to rc.conf, as billf has stated. rc.conf.local is deprecated in favour of rc.conf, and therefore, you are in the wrong. > Lets point this problem out to the real people who are in the > position to fix it. The way this works is that if you want something that nobody else can see value in (or are telling you that it's a bad idea) is to implement it, then send the patches for review. "I want a broken system" is not worthy of a PR. > it's not your call to make. You are just front door admin person. We don't have any "front door admin" people. All your settings are stored as environmental variables. All of them are processed by shell script. Do you want to see your system unbootable, since no table of settings will tell booting process, working like you're describing, that PATH is a "good" setting? PATH don't turn anything on or off, but it's required, and it's always exist from system-wide defaults. Remember, there is no seatbelts here if you're root, and it's a Bad Thing (TM) to blame developers for YOUR mistakes. Anyway, current ftpd code allows them to delete existing files, provided that access rights are correct. This is, in effect, very much like allowing to modify. Combining SUIDDIR and -M flag to ftpd is not a good workaround. >How-To-Repeat: run /usr/libexec/ftpd -ADllS (may be other flags, but not -m). create mode 1777 incoming directory in appropriate location. The system in question uses a VIA C3 Samuel processor running at 800Mhz. Reboot results in a system hang after fully halting and printing "Rebooting" to the console, just as reported in the original PR. I have two identical machines with the same problem. This occurs with both generic and customized kernel configurations. > > Copyright (c) 1992-2003 The FreeBSD Project. > Copyright (c) 1979, 1980, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 > The Regents of the University of California.
