These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. So, we redirect stdout to stderr # and then make descriptor 3 go to stdout, and have Ghostscript # write its output there. Exercise for the clever reader: # capture the stderr output from Ghostscript and mail it back to # the user originating the print job. # Your script does not pay attention to the fact that postscript program might mess up stdout, so I guess there is no way around the redirection to fd 3. I'v been thinking about writing one for Free BSD that would go through an install step by step, and make it as easy as the other I did. Dispite using Unix and other operating systems since the late Seventies, I feel once in a while lost because I do not understand the documentation. A documentation you suggest would make it much easier for the user to overcome at least the problem even if he does not understand why he was able to overcome it. I don't have to imagine being a Windows user as I *was* one, and I wanted to try FreeBSD (4.0 at that time). All I got was that handbook. Unix just looked all greek to me. That was the point where my route to FreeBSD began. Or did you mean a *dumb* Windows user? Yes, I'm fed up with the "them poor Windows users" FUD. If you're looking for things to document (better/more), how about the VM system (e. g. the fourth line in top, or process states as shown in ps/top? I actually saw a Samba/AD integration tutorial aimed at Windows users. It went like this: type vi /etc/samba/smb.conf and hit enter type j three times, then O, then ... Needles to say, the result was that I couldn't tell what changes are should do without following it to the letter, which was slow as hell, and was prone to error in case the file I was editing was different from the one they were assuming. Every (other) piece of technical documentation I've seen assumed some prior knowledge, and brains, in the reader. Of course, the level is a matter of discussion, and Matt Dillon is probably not the best target audience of a hypothetical "How NFS works" Handbook chapter, but don't aim the documentation at "dummies". -- FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE-p2 10:46AM up 1:17, 5 users, load averages: 0.02, 0.02, 0.00 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Apr 21 03:50:44 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B7BA16A4CE; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 03:50:44 -0700 (PDT) Received: from baerenklau.de.freebsd.org (baerenklau.de.freebsd.org [195.185.195.14]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 92A0343D4C; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 03:50:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wosch@panke.de.FreeBSD.org) Received: from baerenklau.de.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) i3LAog7B075370; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 12:50:42 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wosch@panke.de.FreeBSD.org) Received: (from uucp@localhost)i3LAogHj075369; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 12:50:42 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wosch@panke.de.FreeBSD.org) Received: (from wosch@localhost) by paula.panke.de.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.9) id i3LAoPG4004772; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 12:50:25 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from wosch) Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 12:50:25 +0200 From: Wolfram Schneider To: Hiroki Sato Message-ID: <20040421105025.GA4727@paula.panke.de.freebsd.org> References: <20040413.042313.70228550.hrs@eos.ocn.ne.jp> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040413.042313.70228550.hrs@eos.ocn.ne.jp> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: doc-committers@freebsd.org cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: HEADS UP: doc/ slush for 4.10R begins on 17 April X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 10:50:44 -0000 On 2004-04-13 04:23:13 +0900, Hiroki Sato wrote: > Hi all, > > Just a reminder; the doc/ slush begins on 17 April. > The purpose of the doc/ slush is to slow down the rate of change > in that tree in order to allow the translation teams time to finalize > their work and to avoid last-minute breakage for the 4.10-RELEASE. > As usual, this is not a real freeze and requires no formal commit > approval procedure for your commit, but you are kindly requested > not to commit large, structural changes during that period. > > Tagging of the doc/ tree is scheduled to take place on 24 April. > Thank you for your cooperation and keep up the good work! will be www/ tagged too? -Wolfram -- Wolfram Schneider http://wolfram.schneider.org From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Apr 21 04:01:54 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2955816A4CE for ; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 04:01:54 -0700 (PDT) Received: from fwall.in.markiza.sk (fwall.in.markiza.sk [62.168.76.18]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B393943D1D for ; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 04:01:53 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from corwin@pleiades.aeternal.net) Received: from pleiades.aeternal.net (pleiades.in.markiza.sk [192.168.13.7]) by fwall.in.markiza.sk (Postfix) with ESMTP id C385423057; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 13:01:53 +0200 (CEST) Received: from pleiades.aeternal.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by pleiades.aeternal.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD29B1703D; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 13:03:04 +0200 (CEST) Received: (from corwin@localhost) by pleiades.aeternal.net (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i3LB3470003111; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 13:03:04 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from corwin) Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 13:03:04 +0200 From: Martin Hudec To: Roman Neuhauser Message-ID: <20040421110304.GE2638@pleiades.aeternal.net> References: <4085F03F.4050904@pacific.net.sg> <20040421091343.GB1051@isis.wad.cz> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040421091343.GB1051@isis.wad.cz> X-Copyright: (C) 2004 Martin Hudec X-Operating-System: FreeBSD pleiades.aeternal.net 5.2.1-RELEASE-p5 i386 X-PGP-Key: http://www.aeternal.net/corwin_aeternal.asc User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: user-opinion poll?! The dummies are the other end. But there are a lot of people who could operate and would like to operate FreeBSD but they are just not able to overcome the problem of installing it. They do not need all the things a server needs. They just need the things to get their very own PC up and running with the help of a handbook they understand. Are all windows users smart? That doesn't look very likely from the statistics point of view. Note that I didn't assert *all* windows users were dumb. There are smart people, there are dumb people, and both groups use computers, both groups use Windows. I'm not going to pretend it is not so. I remember a post on questions@ in which someone reported this problem: he tried to install FreeBSD several times, but all attempts failed; the thing rebooted the computer, and left him with a screen of crap ending with "Login:", which he couldn't get past because it insisted he must give it some password (he had no idea what password). Now, I of course don't know/remember whether the person was a Windows user, for what it's worth he could be completely new to computers. It doesn't matter. The post suggested the person wasn't particularly inteligent. I don't want the project to cater for such people. -- FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE-p2 1:14PM up 3:45, 5 users, load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Apr 21 09:55:12 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04D2016A4CE for ; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 09:55:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: from fwall.in.markiza.sk (fwall.in.markiza.sk [62.168.76.18]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 900ED43D5D for ; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 09:55:11 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from corwin@pleiades.aeternal.net) Received: from pleiades.aeternal.net (pleiades.in.markiza.sk [192.168.13.7]) by fwall.in.markiza.sk (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4A07522F97 for ; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 18:55:12 +0200 (CEST) Received: from pleiades.aeternal.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by pleiades.aeternal.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8059F1703D for ; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 18:56:24 +0200 (CEST) Received: (from corwin@localhost) by pleiades.aeternal.net (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i3LGuODh005557 for freebsd-doc@freebsd.org; Wed, 21 Apr 2004 18:56:24 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from corwin) Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 18:56:24 +0200 From: Martin Hudec To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040421165624.GS2638@pleiades.aeternal.net> References: <4085F03F.4050904@pacific.net.sg> <20040421091343.GB1051@isis.wad.cz> <20040421110304.GE2638@pleiades.aeternal.net> <20040421162152.GA2088@isis.wad.cz> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040421162152.GA2088@isis.wad.cz> X-Copyright: (C) 2004 Martin Hudec X-Operating-System: FreeBSD pleiades.aeternal.net 5.2.1-RELEASE-p5 i386 X-PGP-Key: http://www.aeternal.net/corwin_aeternal.asc User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i Subject: Re: user-opinion poll?! You mentioned statistic point of view :), well when I was returning from London, UK, I found a nice quote on a sandwich paper :).. "Statistics are like bikini, what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is vital" So much for statistics.. As far as -questions list is concerned, well it looks like FreeBSD might be receiving more and more attention from users of other operating systems, like linux has and is receiving from Windows users. They've migrated from Windows to linux (generally mainly because it was/is IN, it was/is actual, it was/is something prestigeous, and it allowed/s someone to refer to other Windows users as BFU, lamers etc etc), just to experience the feel and function of Unix like system, and when they started to want more and more (and to get rid of dependency hell as is usual on poor maintained rpm based systems for example) they found BSD Family.. And they are oriented in the basics at least.. but what about Windows user going straight to BSD? Well maybe someone like this posted that question to maillist. I, personally, do not want the project to cater that kind of people too, but let's assume that they are capable of learning new things.. and that one day, they will be much more experienced and they will become more valued part of community. No, there is no such branch for the present. Currently, the only 5.x branches available are HEAD (the bleeding-edge -CURRENT itself) and the release branches (or security branches) RELENG_5_0, RELENG_5_1, RELENG_5_2, RELENG_5_2_1. None of them has the semantics of a stable branch because, well, 5.x is not yet deemed stable. When the transition to 5.x-STABLE is made, a new RELENG_5 branch will be created and it will then have the same 'stable branch' semantics as the current RELENG_4. This will most likely happen with the release of FreeBSD 5.3 in a couple of months. > Similarly, http://www.freebsd.org/releng/ should be updated (the > HEAD comment says 5.2 is not yet announced). For the present, yes, there is only the release branch RELENG_5_2, which only carries security fixes. Thus, there doesn't seem to be anything that would need updating on the above URL's, except the updates that have already been done as things progressed with the release of 5.2.1 and the upcoming 4.10 :) G'luck, Peter --=20 Peter Pentchev roam@ringlet.net roam@sbnd.net roam@FreeBSD.org PGP key: http://people.FreeBSD.org/~roam/roam.key.asc Key fingerprint FDBA FD79 C26F 3C51 C95E DF9E ED18 B68D 1619 4553 If I had finished this sentence, --cQXOx3fnlpmgJsTP Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFAiTLt7Ri2jRYZRVMRAn+HAJ4kWLLNdhZh/faBHs2GsRyEbDDPrACgtmEZ 0V4TaANTRHUjjjrjnom3JCo= =FyRx -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --cQXOx3fnlpmgJsTP-- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 23 10:52:24 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 189B916A4CE; Fri, 23 Apr 2004 10:52:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp.eos.ocn.ne.jp (eos.ocn.ne.jp [211.6.83.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9AC9A43D5D; Fri, 23 Apr 2004 10:52:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from hrs@FreeBSD.org) Received: from delta.allbsd.org (p1160-adsau12honb4-acca.tokyo.ocn.ne.jp [220.97.138.160]) by smtp.eos.ocn.ne.jp (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0779B276B; Sat, 24 Apr 2004 02:52:20 +0900 (JST) Received: from localhost (alph.allbsd.org [192.168.0.10]) by delta.allbsd.org (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i3NHptA2090870; Sat, 24 Apr 2004 02:51:55 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from hrs@FreeBSD.org) Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 02:51:47 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <20040424.025147.23021827.hrs@eos.ocn.ne.jp> To: rushani@FreeBSD.org From: Hiroki Sato In-Reply-To: <20040423.163438.78787869.rushani@FreeBSD.org> References: <20040413.042313.70228550.hrs@eos.ocn.ne.jp> <20040423.163438.78787869.rushani@FreeBSD.org> X-PGPkey-fingerprint: BDB3 443F A5DD B3D0 A530 FFD7 4F2C D3D8 2793 CF2D X-Mailer: Mew version 4.0.64 on Emacs 21.3 / Mule 5.0 (SAKAKI) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Multipart/Signed; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1; boundary="--Security_Multipart(Sat_Apr_24_02_51_47_2004_337)--" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: doc-committers@FreeBSD.org cc: doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: HEADS UP: doc/ slush for 4.10R begins on 17 April X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 17:52:24 -0000 ----Security_Multipart(Sat_Apr_24_02_51_47_2004_337)-- Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hideyuki KURASHINA wrote in <20040423.163438.78787869.rushani@FreeBSD.org>: rushani> > Tagging of the doc/ tree is scheduled to take place on 24 April. rushani> rushani> When is it tagged?
