This device is essentially a small processor that sits on the PCI bus as a device and has access to a private ATA host adapter. It can act on the PCI bus as a sort of proxy for the ATA host adapter, but it doesn't do that very seamlessly. I hacked it into the FreeBSD 4.10 ATA driver by defining its PCI vendor and device IDs and got it to do non-DMA I/O with an ancient hard disk that did not support DMA. When I connected it to a modern CD drive that did support DMA (no modern hard drive was available), it locked up. There were other glitches. I eventually gave up. I exchanged some email with a Mark Lu at ITE who was working on a FreeBSD driver that plugged into the SCSI CAM subsystem. If you feel ambitious, you might try to contact him at Mark.Lu@ite.com.tw. He was able to give me a technical document describing parts of the PCI interface to the ITE 8212. (Unfortunately it left far to much undescribed.) I have the version with an AMD 64 chip, and would like to dual boot. I've been a long time user of FreeBSD, but never on a laptop. Currently it will start to boot off the cd, load the kernel, and I can drop to the /boot/loader command prompt. However once I run the command boot from there, the cursor spins a few times, stops, and about 15 seconds later the machine powers off. I have tried turning acpi off, even the full safe mode as /boot/loader calls it, but all yeild the same result, spin cursor and power off. Any Suggestions would be great! I'm looking for controllers with (preferably) 16 or more ports, but it is feasible to fit 2 8-port controllers into the machine. This is a 1U machine with the ability to fit 2 PCI cards, so low-profile is a must. At the moment, I'm not requiring it to be set at any price -- all suggestions are heartily welcomed. I've seen a couple of miscellaneous controllers in the archives; it would be nice to hear experiences you've had with these. Kind regards, Devon H. One thing you may want to consider is this interesting gadget: http://www.bwct.de/multi_serial.html it's a six port serial USB adapter and the man behind the company is tisco@freebsd.org I havn't tried it myself, (indeed I may even have broken the driver for it :-), but it looks a lot more sensible to me than PCI serial ports since you can locate it closer to the machine and only have to run a USB cable over to it. To make it 100% ideal for me, it would have a reed-relay output next to each serial port, so that I can use it as a remote reset as well. -- Poul-Henning Kamp | UNIX since Zilog Zeus 3.20 phk@FreeBSD.ORG | TCP/IP since RFC 956 FreeBSD committer | BSD since 4.3-tahoe Never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence. Thanks, PHK. This indeed looks very interesting, and might be ideal as I do live in Holland, so it won't be a big hassle to ship things. Interestingly, I took a look at their site, and they appear to have a ready-made 1U, 18-port console + relay solution for only 567EUR, which might be ideal for me. The kernel has been built with vlan support. There are 2 vlan's on rl2. The kernel has been built with ipfilter default deny. Both ipfw and ipf are in use. PC is a new 2.4ghz P4 on a VIA chipset. When I put this in place of the box it is "temporarily" replacing, I can ping out to the world on rl0, I can ping to the other server on vr0. I get no love from rl1, and I've just realised, I don't think I tried to get any love from rl2. Pinging devices that are on the network that rl1 serves, I get no route to host. I check the firewall rules, and find that we seem to be blocking packets. Ok, I set the first rules in ipfilter to be pass in quick from any to any pass out quick from any to any and for ipfw ${fwcmd} add pass all from any to any Now I get response timed out, and there are no indications of any packets being blocked. However, arp -a shows me MAC addresses for machines on that network. Didn't try tcpdump, that might be my next option. Can anyone thing of any reasons the cards might not work? They all show up in ifconfig, it's not that the drivers are limited to one card only are they? Other than device vlan, is there anything I need in the kernel for vlan support? Both getting my thoughts in order, and checking that I didn't leave out something stupid. Yes, forwarding is turned on. Matt. -- Matthew Wallis. Systems and Networks Administrator. Cybersource.
