If you are currently not a TLD site (ftpX.freebsd.org, as opposed to ftpX.CC.freebsd.org) but feel your site would make a good TLD site please send a message to "mirror-admin@freebsd.org" to say you are interested. It wouldn't hurt to say you're interested no matter where you are but the final decision will be based on: - Non-US based site slightly preferred, the one being replaced is non-US and I am still interested in having the TLD sites not be US-centric as they had been in the past. - Full mirror, should carry everything. - Good network connectivity on a global basis, relatively high limit on bandwidth consumption and number of user connects. - Sync with one of the master sites at least twice a day. - Existing and well established official mirror sites preferred. The other times we have needed to do this I got several offers from excellent sites so the final decision was difficult and was more or less done by tossing coins... :-) So, please do not be offended if you say you are interested but your site is not chosen - it should not be taken as any reflection on the quality of your site. Thanks. Well, I am sure ftp.gwdg.de is an "excellent site" within your stated aspects, but from a "german" view, ftp.gwdg.de (Daniel Lang) should qualify before ftp.gwdg.de because his server is running FreeBSD. Iam running Linux "only" in the sense of some participants here.. ;-)) Anyways, ftp.gwdg.de is ftp2.de.freebsd.org. Location: Germany Mirror: full Internet Connection: 1 GBit/sec Limits: ftp 8192, http 2048, rsync 333 These limits are merely to detect race conditions, not to limit anything; the real limit is I/O per seconds from the filesystem, but ftp.gwdg.de has 12 GB RAM and by this a huge buffer cache; the current total output rate is 50 TB/month. sync: 2 times a day with ftp-master.cz.freebsd.org (which probably would qualify better, if interested). Existing and well-established: yes. ;-)) Cheers -e -- Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org) From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 23 00:10:05 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DA3A416A4CE for ; Fri, 23 Jul 2004 00:10:05 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mailer.gwdg.de (mailer.gwdg.de [134.76.10.26]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A012C43D55 for ; Fri, 23 Jul 2004 00:10:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from emoenke@gwdg.de) Received: from gwdu05.gwdg.de ([134.76.98.95]) by mailer.gwdg.de with esmtp (TLSv1:DES-CBC3-SHA:168) (Exim 4.34) id 1BnndU-0007as-N6; Fri, 23 Jul 2004 02:10:05 +0200 Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2004 02:10:04 +0200 (CEST) From: Eberhard Moenkeberg To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: Message-ID: References: <20040722152448.GB21666@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-Spam-Level: / X-Spam-Report: Content analysis: 0.0 points, 6.0 required X-Virus-Scanned: (clean) by exiscan+sophie cc: Konrad Heuer cc: kensmith@cse.Buffalo.EDU Subject: Re: New TLD mirror site X-BeenThere: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Distributions Hubs: mail sup ftp List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2004 00:10:06 -0000 Hi, On Fri, 23 Jul 2004, Eberhard Moenkeberg wrote: > On Thu, 22 Jul 2004, Ken Smith wrote: > > > I was given a heads-up that one of our current TLD mirror sites will > > be cutting back on their services so we should find a replacement. > > > > If you are currently not a TLD site (ftpX.freebsd.org, as opposed to > > ftpX.CC.freebsd.org) but feel your site would make a good TLD site > > please send a message to "mirror-admin@freebsd.org" to say you are > > interested. Unfortunately ftp.leo.org has suffered severe instabilities in the period from mid-June to mid-July. The issues have been resolved now and we are stable for over a week, but I still need to run ftp.leo.org with WITNESS and INVARIANTS enabled, resulting in a severe performance loss. I expect to be able to remove these options soon, but I guess Kenneth should be aware of that. Our FreeBSD mirror is up to date, though. Further, ftp.gwdg.de is a bigger machine, with at least an equal good connection. So it's up to the mirror coordinator.
