From: Dejan Lesjak To: freebsd-gnats-submit@freebsd.org, granted14@yahoo.com Cc: Subject: Re: ports/75133: x11-server/xorg-server is missing dependencies to x11/xorg-libraries during compilation Date: Thu, 16 Dec 2004 00:42:49 +0100 xorg-server port does depend on xorg-libraries through use of USE_XLIB variable. Running commands from 'How-To-Repeat' section (with a small fix of x11-server -> x11-servers of course) first installs xorg-libraries and then proceeds with building and installing xorg-server here. Also ports build cluster doesn't seem to complain about missing dependencies (you can check for a build log here: http://pointyhat.freebsd.org/errorlogs/i386-5-full-logs/) The proposed workaround would indeed cause havoc as you say as there is no xorg-libraries executable installed by either of X11 libraries ports. Thus every port that defines USE_XLIB would try to reinstall chosen X11 libraries and fail if they would already be installed. All in all it seems that there is something wrong with your environment. You can see on which port xorg-server depends by using pretty-print-build-depends-list and pretty-print-run-depends-list make target as descibed in ports(7). Both outputs should include xorg-libraries. I know most of us are quite busy this time of year, but out of curiosity, is there any chance at all of Xorg 6.8 making it into the tree before this release? 6.8.0 came out during the 5.3 release cycle and obviously couldn't make it into that release in time. Is there a reason that 6.8.0 and now 6.8.1 have been held off? There is a seriously annoying bug in 6.7.0 and earlier that prevents Xv from correctly allocating offscreen video memory for pixmaps. It essentially breaks every video app in existence. The problem can be worked around by specifying the XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps option in XF86Config, but this is an inefficient way to draw video and also requires the end user to understand the bug and track down the workaround. More information on the bug is here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=474 Does it help if I point out that NetBSD has already beat us to the punch with Xorg 6.8.1 by over a month? Come on, they've got a tiny little ports tree. ;-) Thanks, Brandon -- Pseudo-Random Googlism: xmas is so common in advertising most likely because xmas and sale have the same number of letters From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Dec 18 06:38:54 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E5CCD16A4CE for ; Sat, 18 Dec 2004 06:38:54 +0000 (GMT) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (CPE0050040655c8-CM00111ae02aac.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [69.194.102.143]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 89D6843D5C for ; Sat, 18 Dec 2004 06:38:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 5AF82512CB; Fri, 17 Dec 2004 22:38:53 -0800 (PST) Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 22:38:53 -0800 From: Kris Kennaway To: "Brandon D. Is there a > reason that 6.8.0 and now 6.8.1 have been held off? No, the 6.8.1 update has been in testing for a few weeks now. There were a number of problems that needed to be fixed before committing, but it's almost ready now and should go in within the week. > Does it help if I point out that NetBSD has already beat us to the punch > with Xorg 6.8.1 by over a month? The default X Window System for 4.x is XFree86 anyway - and given how near = 4.x=20 is to its EOL, that won't change anymore. Xorg on 4.x actually isn't much of a safe bet - packages are not built for = it=20 (or against it) and any combination FreeBSD4 + Xorg + receives= =20 few to zero testing. I've already seen one report of KDE "not working right= "=20 on 4.x with the Xorg 6.8.1 patches that have been floating around - and sin= ce=20 nobody from the current KDE team has time to maintain a 4.x + Xorg system,= =20 this combination will most likely become unsupported. So, cut short, you should think twice before deploying 4.x systems with Xor= g,=20 it will greatly increase your support overhead one way or the other - if fo= r=20 the only reason that you will need to build your own packages for them. =2D-=20 ,_, | Michael Nottebrock | lofi@freebsd.org (/^ ^\) | FreeBSD - The Power to Serve | http://www.freebsd.org \u/ | K Desktop Environment on FreeBSD | http://freebsd.kde.org --nextPart1192816.XLVa0Xlt49 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBBw/BnXhc68WspdLARAin1AKCMlxy50GljgGG0DNKYD4z+4R2rUACghSEu LtPgbdSV0iBe0XvFau3PJjI= =/KLt -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart1192816.XLVa0Xlt49--
