These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. OK, this one is really for me (sorry about the delay in commenting on the thread)... The main problem here is, what exactly is worth documenting? In general almost all ATA chipsets will just work (note ATA RAID is a different issue) so most of the time you don't really need any hardware notes for ATA. If we ignore that for a moment, I see the follow options: - Document all supported chipsets. Pro: It's probably possible to keep this more or less up-to-date by following ata(4) commits. Con: It's not really useful in most cases since you often do not know, and can't find out, which chipset is on some motherboard or controller card before purchasing the device and looking at which chip really is on the card. - Document all supported motherboards and cards. Pro: You get a usable list. Con: It would be impossible to keep such a list up-to-date and it would be huge. As you probably see neither option is really good, which is why nothing has really been done about it. I actually did convert ata(4) when doing the original automatically generated hardware notes so it had a HARDWARE section and had automatic generation of the Hardware Notes for ata(4), but I did not commit it since it did not really seem useful. Basically I'm not really sure what's the best thing to do and neither are the people I have disussed this with, e.g. brueffer and joeld. Hence the current status-quo. If someone has a good idea on how to handle this please speak up. I encountered a momentary issue, easily fixed, when I set up rc.conf and rc.conf.site as discussed here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/configtuning-core- configuration.html The problem was that I set up the first executable line of rc.conf as . rc.conf.site not realizing that the FreeBSD startup code does not consider /etc to be the current directory at that moment. In effect, I had splunged rc.conf. I then looked up the commands for mounting the appropriate filesystems read-write and edited the fateful line of rc.conf to read . /etc/rc.conf.site Restarting the system worked beautifully. As such, I would like to suggest that the appropriate Handbook page be changed to reflect the use of the full pathname of the rc.conf.site file within the rc.conf file. I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you that I don't think I've ever laid eyes on a finer piece of documentation than the FreeBSD online Handbook. Really, I mean it - clear, concise, helpful - written by people who really care about what they're doing. Bravo/Brava. Please let me know if this has been helpful. Thank you. Oh, I see I think. So, basically, you're saying that dirname() and basename() trigger false positives in the memory leak detection tools you used. I think the reason `bname' is not declared as: static char bname[MAXPATHLEN]; is to avoid actually allocating this array in the BSS area of programs that link with libc (practically every dynamic/shared executable on FreeBSD). This is exactly what the rationale for the change was, according to the CVS log of src/lib/libc/gen/dirname.c (rev. 1.6). AFAICT, there isn't an easy/clean way to have this automagically deallocated on program exit, which would let us keep both the malloc() call *and* make your memory leak detection tools happy :-/ From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 1 18:27:47 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EB88A16A41C; Fri, 1 Jul 2005 18:27:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: from mail.freebsdmall.com (ns1.freebsdmall.com [69.50.233.146]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CF61A43D48; Fri, 1 Jul 2005 18:27:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: by mail.freebsdmall.com (Postfix, from userid 2074) id C344B1CE54; Fri, 1 Jul 2005 11:27:47 -0700 (PDT) Date: Fri, 1 Jul 2005 11:27:47 -0700 From: Murray Stokely To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <20050701182747.GC55968@freebsdmall.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i X-GPG-Key-ID: 1024D/0E451F7D X-GPG-Key-Fingerprint: E2CA 411D DD44 53FD BB4B 3CB5 B4D7 10A2 0E45 1F7D Cc: re@FreeBSD.org Subject: FreeBSD 6.0 Documentation X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 01 Jul 2005 18:27:48 -0000 There is a lot of information in the FreeBSD Handbook that needs to be updated for FreeBSD 6.0. For example, the DHCP client has been changed and so configuration is different. There are also a lot of wireless networking changes to support WPA. If anyone is looking for a doc project to work on, this is an area that would be really helpful. We also need to update the FreeBSD 6.0 Migration Guide. One place to start there would be to look through src/UPDATING for the disruptive changes, perform some upgrades of 5.X to 6.0, and start documenting the process. Any takers? - Murray From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jul 2 03:19:43 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E6FA016A41C; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:19:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dannyboy@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BD01C43D48; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:19:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dannyboy@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (dannyboy@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j623JhmC031657; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:19:43 GMT (envelope-from dannyboy@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from dannyboy@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j623JhEB031653; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:19:43 GMT (envelope-from dannyboy) Date: Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:19:43 GMT From: Daniel Harris Message-Id: <200507020319.j623JhEB031653@freefall.freebsd.org> To: victor@bsdes.net, dannyboy@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/82584: Update UID list in the porters handbook X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 02 Jul 2005 03:19:44 -0000 Synopsis: Update UID list in the porters handbook State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: dannyboy State-Changed-When: Sat Jul 2 03:19:31 GMT 2005 State-Changed-Why: Committed, thanks. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=82584 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jul 2 03:41:35 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 80A0216A41C; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:41:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dannyboy@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 57EFB43D1F; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:41:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dannyboy@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (dannyboy@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j623fZ5L034994; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:41:35 GMT (envelope-from dannyboy@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from dannyboy@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j623fZos034990; Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:41:35 GMT (envelope-from dannyboy) Date: Sat, 2 Jul 2005 03:41:35 GMT From: Daniel Harris Message-Id: <200507020341.j623fZos034990@freefall.freebsd.org> To: dannyboy@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, dannyboy@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/79877: 'command' command is missing in builtin(1) manpage X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 02 Jul 2005 03:41:35 -0000 Synopsis: 'command' command is missing in builtin(1) manpage Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->dannyboy Responsible-Changed-By: dannyboy Responsible-Changed-When: Sat Jul 2 03:38:55 GMT 2005 Responsible-Changed-Why: This was (almost) fixed in rev. 1.23. What I want is just to make the documentaion more accurate on that point. If the man page would state that those functions allocate storage and are not thread-safe, I wouldn't have to look into the source code for the explanation of their behaviour. That's my point. :-) Giorgos Keramidas wrote: > On 2005-06-30 23:24, Vlad Skvortsov wrote: > >>Giorgos Keramidas wrote: >> >>>On 2005-06-22 02:51, Vlad Skvortsov wrote: >>> >>>>The man pages for both basename(3) and dirname(3) state that the >>>>functions return pointers to the internal _static_ storage. >>>>However, those functions actually perform malloc() call to >>>>allocate storage on the first invocation.
