Since we add direct dependencies to the ports also to be able to determine those ports which may need a rebuild on some major changes, acroread needs to have an USE_LINUX entry. I've noticed that you removed some USE_LINUX=yes lines from some linux ports with the commit log "Respect the user's USE_LINUX setting." This is the wrong fix for your/our needs. Using USE_LINUX?=yes looks more correct to me. I try to test this later in the evening. If it works as expected I try to also get time to patch all ports and commit the fix tonight, since 1. I can't commit it till the next weekend, 2. you can't commit it and 3. the ports freeze starts soon and we want the ports collection to be in good shape for 5.4-Release. Point 1 and 3 are also the reason why I will not provide a diff for review on freebsd-emulation, which every change which touches such a large amount of ports should provide. I will be reachable via mail in case something breaks. This > is the wrong fix for your/our needs. Using USE_LINUX?=yes looks more > correct to me. I try to test this later in the evening. I'm runnig out of time and I need some sleep. I've put the list of affected ports here: http://www.leidinger.net/FreeBSD/USE_LINUX2.txt Following is the header of the file, it should contain enough information to let a committer work on this issue. I'm reachable via mail and will also have enough time to answer technical questions, but I can't work on this myself in the following week. ---snip--- The following list contains ports which need to be reviewed regarding the USE_LINUX?=yes issue. USE_LINUX should be overridable by either "env USE_LINUX=foobar make" or "make USE_LINUX=foobar". If USE_LINUX isn't overrided, it should contain the value "yes". The commit which introduced the bug had the commit log "Respect the user's USE_LINUX setting." which described the intention, but the change of this commit can be better described as "Remove dependency to the default linux base.". If the above mentioned feature isn't possible without a major change in the actual infrastructure, the original behavior should be restored to get the Ports Collection into good shape for 5.4-Release. The commit of the bugfix should also remove the RUN_DEPENDS line joerg had inserted to fix the acroread7 build on a virgin system (it's a suitable workaround if you don't know how our actual linuxolator is installed; thanks to joerg for pointing out this commit to me after a short discussion about the USE_LINUX stuff in acroread7). ---snip--- Bye, Alexander. -- ...and that is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped. http://www.Leidinger.net Alexander @ Leidinger.net GPG fingerprint = C518 BC70 E67F 143F BE91 3365 79E2 9C60 B006 3FE7 From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 21 11:01:17 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 69FED16A4CE for ; Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:01:17 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0EE5943D2D for ; Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:01:17 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j2LB1GqD013396 for ; Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:01:16 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j2LB1Fnu013390 for emulation@freebsd.org; Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:01:15 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:01:15 GMT Message-Id: <200503211101.j2LB1Fnu013390@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: emulation@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:01:17 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. FreeBSD also has a ptrace, and a quick glance makes it look like there may be a 1:1 mapping for most things. But the PTRACE_PEEKUSER / PTRACE_POKEUSER that uml is trying to do to change sycall numbers sounds rather scary. I'm not sure if there would be a 1:1 mapping for that, and I don't think I understand what they are doing well enough to write it from scratch. It was tricky starting from VmWare2, I've succeed with it on vmware2 and on earlier versions of vmware3 (it my previous notebook). I've used manually configured disks description, like: # cat .vmware/VAIO/ad0 #vm|TOOLSVERSION 0 DRIVETYPE ide #vm|VERSION 2 CYLINDERS 116280 HEADS 16 SECTORS 63 #vm|CAPACITY 117210240 ACCESS "../VAIO/ad01.dat" 0 70 ACCESS "/dev/ad0s1" 70 31487330 RDONLY "/dev/ad0s2" 31487400 62910540 ACCESS "/dev/ad0s3" 94397940 22812300 But last time when I tried it works bad (real system won't boot, It reads boot sector, but can't read entire drive validly). I even try to diagnose problem and load fbsd from CD inside vmware and tried to read raw-devices under fbsd - all looks good, but both win and fbsd refuses to boot from pseudo-disk with strange errors. Probably it is vmware BIOS problem -=20 "vmware BIOS is too old to boot from my real HDD ?" Any advise is appreciated. >Thanks in advance. > --=20 Vladimir B. I've seen the web page before; however the patches didn't apply cleanly to recent -CURRENT, and I also thought that 4.5 would need the same modules (vmmon, etc.) to run, and thus would suffer from the same problem as vmware3. But I'll give it another shot. I am running Windows 2000 Pro and also Windows Millennium inside QEMU. I have also tried using both "-user-net" and "/dev/tun0" connections. The connections fail while trying to authenticate my name and password. This connection is being made from my home (which is behind a hardware firewall) to my workplace. I can connect to the VPN when I am using a native Windows computer at my house. After I get the VPN connection working from within QEMU, I am going to use RemoteDesktop, but I haven't got that far yet. Is it possible to use connect to a Microsoft VPN using Windows inside QEMU? Do you have an up-to-date > linux_base-8/linux-XFree86-libs installed? I should have posted a follow up, but I didn't think it was relevant to security. Turned out all that was needed was to add a couple of missing font paths to the font.conf file in the /compat/linux/etc/fonts directory. I now have both Acrobat Reader 7.0 and RealPlayer up and running. I still have some pretty serious concerns with how I needed to fix the uid lookup problem. What I've got going is less than elegant, not to mention a potential security issue. I'll post a follow up on this tomorrow as it's already gotten too late to be writing even this much here.
