The problem also occurs with standard 5.3 kernel (and also 4.9). >Description: USB mass storage, 1/ 2.5" HDD box with USB2, 2/ USB flash key, ohci, machine will lock up, reset, or kernel panic when the device is plugged in or unplugged. This doesn't happen every time, and seems to happen more on slower machines (socket 7, less often on P///-800). If no crash or lockup, the USB mass storage (da0) works fine. Problem has happened on several machines with different chipsets and processors, and also happens with 4.9. I suggest that when a USB device is [un]plugged, several cycles of connect/disconnect/connect occur in rapid succession and the driver can't handle this. PaidForOs works fine on the same hw. It is unreasonable to assume that connectors will make/break cleanly. >How-To-Repeat: Repeatedly plug/unplug USB mass storage on ohci USB hw, 4.9 or 5.3. Try 'wiggling' the connector during [un]plug to provoke the problem. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 27 05:00:10 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 521A216A4CE for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 05:00:10 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1081A43D2F for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 05:00:10 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j2R509xp094375 for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 05:00:09 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j2R509k6094370; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 05:00:09 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 05:00:09 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200503270500.j2R509k6094370@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Murray Baker Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C6C6A16A4CE for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 04:55:19 +0000 (GMT) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ACAC843D41 for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 04:55:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j2R4tJdw048707 for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 04:55:19 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j2R4tJxg048706; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 04:55:19 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200503270455.j2R4tJxg048706@www.freebsd.org> Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 04:55:19 GMT From: Murray Baker To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Subject: i386/79272: "ata" detects and enables UDMA66 or UDMA100 with 40 wire cable X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 05:00:10 -0000 >Number: 79272 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: "ata" detects and enables UDMA66 or UDMA100 with 40 wire cable >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun Mar 27 05:00:09 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Murray Baker >Release: 5.3 >Organization: >Environment: 5.3 standard or custom kernel, several different machines. >Description: "ata" driver detects too high an xDMAx speed, several hw combinations, 5.3-RELEASE. From: Floris 'Tamama' van Gog To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, pluto_777@mac.com Cc: Subject: Re: i386/73666: 5.3 UDMA error WD1600 can't partition drive Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 15:44:40 +0200 Same problem installing 5.3 on a p120 laptop with a 3GB drive. laptop/hardisk supports UDMA2 mode. After reading the mailing lists from back in sept 2004, the following fix can be applied: At boot, select 6 (loader prompt) and type: set hw.ata.ata_dma=0 boot This will disable DMA and completely remove any problems related to it. then it will continue to boot normally After install, upon boot, again disable dma (else it will not be able to mount.. it cant access the drive) To automagically apply this upon every boot, you can alter /boot/loader.conf to include the following: hw.ata.ata_dma=0 Now, I think this is not really a fix, at most a silly temporary patch. It completely disables dma (udma modes) and severely impacts system performance. Note that my in the case of my slow Pentium 120, the drive becomes completely unaccessable when dma mode is enabled. The complaints are timeouts on dma. It does not seem related to network (I dont ave any), or ACPI. The machine is a compaq proliant 850 dual pentium pro 200, with 425mb ram and 4 gb scsi hdd. I have installed freebsd 5.4 pre, m0n0wall, and pfsense. I have experienced the same problem with each one erasing the NVRAM. I have also installed debian linux,ipcop, smoothwall which all do not erase nvram. What happens when it erases the nvram is it causes the second processor to fail. These compaq servers are setup with a smart start cd which stores all system info in nvram. You can uses this system to completely wipe everything bios, hdd, nvram. I have used this cd several times and installed several distro's and the only one that seems to conflict with this machine's nvram is anything based on freebsd. >How-To-Repeat: Just install OS >Fix: None that I can find. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 28 19:49:54 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3129116A4CE;
