From: "Bill Schmitt (SW)" To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, software@schmittnet.com Cc: Subject: Re: i386/86820: ISO Install Disk hangs after acd0: Date: Mon, 03 Oct 2005 14:09:05 -0400 I have now tried 6 beta 4, 5.4, 4.11, 4.10, and 4.9. I can install 4.9 from CD and boot from the hard drive after it is complete. There are no messages in the log after the acd0: line. 4.10 and 4.11 allow me to do a full installation, but the system hangs after the acd0: message in both cases when I attempt a subsequent boot from the hard disk. 5.4 and 6 beta 4 will not move past that point in the installation. Based on appearances, whatever change was made to the boot sequence written to the hard disk starting with version 10, without changing the sequence on the installer, then moved to the installer when 5 was released and presumably included in 6. This motherboard runs 5.4 very well. I have been unable to get any stability with 6.0-BETA3,4,5. I have had various problems with sysinstall (usually ending up with it freezing whilst installing one of the binary package sets - not rebooting - just freezing). I finally installed 6.0-BETA by first installing into a vmware guest, then dumping the filesystems and restoring them from a 5.4 install on another disk partition. The 6.0-BETA install is still not stable, it freezes after a random amount of time after booting. Any suggestions as to how I might troubleshoot this problem? >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 4 08:04:59 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: i386@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 80FB616A41F; Please reopen this PR. I can serve with the requested feedback. Note that I have a Pentax Optio S40 but the behaviour shown is the same with this device (both the original, problematic behaviour and the one shown after applying the fix). If I take out the USB_VENDOR_ASAHIOPTICAL entry from umass_devdescrs, the behaviour is the same as with the provided fix: there are "phase error" messages, but the da0 device works aptly. Here is the exact batch of kernel messages after plugging the camera in: umass0: PENTAX product 0x0015, rev 1.10/0.00, addr 3 da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0 da0: Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device da0: 1.000MB/s transfers da0: 483MB (990976 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 483C) umass0: Phase Error, residue = 0 (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Synchronize cache failed, status == 0x4, scsi status == 0x0 umass0: Phase Error, residue = 0 (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Synchronize cache failed, status == 0x4, scsi status == 0x0 umass0: Phase Error, residue = 0 (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Synchronize cache failed, status == 0x4, scsi status == 0x0 umass0: Phase Error, residue = 0 (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Synchronize cache failed, status == 0x4, scsi status == 0x0 umass0: Phase Error, residue = 0 (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Synchronize cache failed, status == 0x4, scsi status == 0x0 umass0: Phase Error, residue = 0 (da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Synchronize cache failed, status == 0x4, scsi status == 0x0 For my system, kern.osreldate is 700000, but I don't think that this would have too much importance in this case. I'm leary > about building world until I'm sure I can get past the keyboard driver hang. Hi, the commit on June 10th mainly moved all files related to atkbdc(4) and its children to sys/dev/atkbdc and reshuffled some code but had next to no functional changes on architectures other than sparc64. So far there where no reports that these changes actually broke one of these drivers, only false ones. One was that on some machines the fact that the malloc-type atkbdc(4) defines no longer is static happend to exhaust UMA_BOOT_PAGES on some machines which were already close the edge due to other changes. UMA_BOOT_PAGES was increased accordingly. There was another report of keyboard problems since then but which turned out to be triggered by ehci(4): http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2005-August/053957.html I have look at my changes to atkbdc(4) etc. over and over again due to these and still can't think of why the changes could have a negative impact on these drivers. Therefore I think that other changes since June 2nd are causing you problems. The ever ongoing changes to interrupt handling and routing on i386 come to my mind (probing and attaching the keyboards triggers interrupts and I've seen hangs during device configuration caused by problems with interrupts before). But generally I unfortunately can't think of a particular change. It sounds like you already installed a 6.0 kernel on the hard disk. If that's the case you could try some things in order to avoid the hang. In particular you could try to add hint.atkbd.0.flags="0x1" to /boot/device.hints and also try with hint.atkbd.0.flags="0x8". You could also try to remove the hint.atkb* lines there entirely, that way the keyboard controller and its children should be probed somewhat later in that game through PnP rather than as legacy ISA devices. If your board supports ACPI you could also try whether enabling it makes a difference. > Is there anything I can try on the BETA5 disc to either get more information > about the hang to pass on to you or bypass the issue entirely? > Well, you could do a verbose boot but I don't think that won't yield relevant information. If you build a custom kernel with options DDB and KDB enabled or have a 6.0 BETA3 disk which still had these enabled in the GENERIC kernel (I think BETA 4.0, too, but certainly not BETA5) you could try to press CTRL-ALT-ESC in oder to break into the debugger and check with the 'where' command where the machine hangs. Whether breaking into the debugger via that key sequence works however depends on whether the keyboard works at that time (either due to being sufficiently attached for high-level console support or still working through low-level console support before it is reinitialized). If that doesn't work you'll need to use a serial console together with a kernel that is built with options BREAK_TO_DEBUGGER in addition to DDB and KDB and send a break signal on the serial line. Marius ------------------------ It appears there is some sort of interrupt problem as he mentions. I took another 1850R server without any additional PCI cards installed and 6.0-BETA5 boots fine. The original server contained two fxp cards and a hifn crypto accelerator. I will test a few additional things to isolate the problem further. I submitted it after posting to the questions@freebsd.org list and, after a little head scratching, the only suggestions that came back were to submit it as a bug. As of now, I've been forced to install release 4.9 from an old disk that I fortunately had, because I cannot boot successfully after an install of 4.10 or 4.11, and the installation disk itself (from a downloaded ISO image) hangs on releases 5.4 and 6 beta 4. I know there's a lot of work going on getting 6 out the door, but so far this seems to be embedded there, too, and in all the versions I've tried (4.9 installs and boots without issue). I'd like to get away from an unsupported version of FreeBSD. Is there any way I can get a hint on how to proceed? From what I can see on the Problem Report screen (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=86820), I'm the only one who's looked at it.
