In /etc/start_if.wi0 I set: ifconfig wi0 wepmode off ssid "" and in /etc/rc.conf: ifconfig_wi0="DHCP" It now finds open APs, associates, and starts dhclient without a problem. -- R. The card is a no-name brand ("Mentor"), and I'm using it in my Sony Vaio Picturebook laptop. For the most part it works ok: I can initialize it, get it to associate, I can even do WPA2 with it using wpa_supplicant. The only problem is that after it's been running for a while (usually several hours, though sometimes sooner), the laptop will freeze up. Typically when it happens, one of the LEDs on the card will be flashing, which I think means it's become disassociated or the re-keying interval has expired. Sadly, since the whole laptop wedges up completely, I have no clue what's causing the problem. I haven't noticed the same problem when testing the same card with my Soekris board at home, and I don't have another laptop or card to test it with, so I'm at a bit of a loss. I've tried everything I can think of to try and get the laptop to cough up some useful info but with no joy. The fact that I can only get it to crash maybe once or twice a day doesn't help. I suspect the issue is related to WPA2 somehow, so if you're not going to use that, you may not notice any problems. Give it a try and see what happens. -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (510) 749-2329 | Senior Engineer, Master of Unix-Fu wpaul@windriver.com | Wind River Systems ============================================================================= you're just BEGGING to face the moose ============================================================================= From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 19 07:18:17 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F30A216A41F for ; Wed, 19 Oct 2005 07:18:16 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd-listen@fabiankeil.de) Received: from smtprelay01.ispgateway.de (smtprelay01.ispgateway.de [80.67.18.13]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2467143D45 for ; Wed, 19 Oct 2005 07:18:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd-listen@fabiankeil.de) Received: (qmail 19086 invoked from network); 19 Oct 2005 07:18:13 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO localhost) ([pbs]775067@[217.187.176.213]) (envelope-sender ) by smtprelay01.ispgateway.de (qmail-ldap-1.03) with SMTP for ; 19 Oct 2005 07:18:13 -0000 Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 09:18:58 +0200 From: Fabian Keil To: Parv Message-ID: <20051019091858.3ea880bd@localhost> In-Reply-To: <20051018192903.GB27080@holestein.holy.cow> References: <1129300711.742.6.camel@RabbitsDen> <434FA5CA.31658.856AD66D@localhost> <20051018073526.GC2987@lbl.pl> <20051018104551.0a7e7a45@localhost> <20051018192903.GB27080@holestein.holy.cow> X-Mailer: Sylpheed-Claws 1.9.14 (GTK+ 2.6.4; i386-portbld-freebsd5.4) X-PGP-KEY-URL: http://www.fabiankeil.de/gpg-keys/freebsd-listen-2006-08-19.asc X-Face: `PhZA=Lxak@TtN(1g, #<&MCpy@&]f<.#LD|V?.7uN7(:.RP/8s&S, oWJtD[Xd4(_YsBm?fGC OLJGk9OysbMQE%?&$, M[odvx9[[`'F\@JjAC@w4X6/-Gr^apr)f''exvwLOUalUW?~>frSC-Y]0v9, U4"Hz]~H&ZP%S1YJV@MfDIDu2>cw~wMiCW#9PY: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="Signature_Wed__19_Oct_2005_09_18_58_+0200_H3Q8u=XLEMxMx6++"; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=PGP-SHA1 Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Suspend drains battery on IBM T42 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 07:18:17 -0000 --Signature_Wed__19_Oct_2005_09_18_58_+0200_H3Q8u=XLEMxMx6++ Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Parv wrote: > in message <20051018104551.0a7e7a45@localhost>, > wrote Fabian Keil thusly... > > > > KubaTyszko wrote: > >=20 > > > > Have you tried the suspend to disk? When I first got my T42p, I went around-and-around-and-around trying to get S4BIOS to show up. I tried creating suspend-to-disk partitions and files with a couple of different utilities from the IBM site and from (i think) the bios maker's site (phoenix). I was never able to get anything to work, and finally just decided that the machine just didn't offer S4BIOS. The readme from IBM site that you reference above does say that T42's are supported, so I may be ready to take another look at this. I notice in the readme that hibernation won't work if you're using the OS2 boot manager, which I take to mean that one must be using the original IBM MBR code. I bet that the FreeBSD boot manager will fubar it too. I had this problem when I was getting suspend to disk to work on my Sony Vaio PCG-Z505-something-or-other, and ended up dual booting with the stock MBR jumping to the "active partition" (freebsd), which had a copy of grub installed and taking it from there. Here's a summary of what I figured out when I first got my T42p: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-mobile/2004-September/004851.html g. I did this, and have onw remaining propblem: if I have X (xorg/windowmaker under 5.4) on and close the lid (withous having suspended first) the I "loose" the top 1 cm or so of the screen. The mouse also gets an "offset", which HUPing moused does not change. Nor does a refresh or restart of windowmaker work: only stopping and restarting X will do it. I prefer not to do automatic suspend for the lid close, since I sometimes leave it on for longer periods, e.g. so that cron can do some regular tasks overnight, and want to protect the keyboard from cats. Would setting some value (which?) for the lid close help?
