I have Asrock K7VT4A Pro motherboard with via VT8237 chipset. Sound is great, I just can not control the volume. I know it is a known issue, but maybe this information can help someone to resolve this problem. I run FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE-p6. I applied a patch from http://staff.mybsd.org.my/skywizard/FreeBSD/sound/snd_RELENG_5_20050825_035.diff, but still no luck. After that dmesg shows: dmesg | grep pcm pcm0: port 0xc400-0xc4ff irq 22 at device 17.5 on pci0 pcm0: pcm0: cat /dev/sndstat FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Installed devices: pcm0: at io 0xc400 irq 22 kld snd_via8233 (5p/5s/1r/0v channels duplex default) Win driver says it is a CMI 9761A codec. If I boot from "live" FreeSBie CD, 1.1 it is the same situation. Thanks for your support, Ales. Current sound driver doesn't have 'soft volume' to control volume attenuation through software and unfortunately, your sound codec (CMI 9761) doesn't have its volume controller. Fortunately, basic infrastructure (feeder) to implement this already exist and hopefully will not cause much radical changes. Hopefully I (or anybody) will have enough time to implement this within this week. -- Ariff Abdullah MyBSD http://www.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://staff.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://tomoyo.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 4 16:19:55 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D40D16A41F for ; Sun, 4 Sep 2005 16:19:55 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ales.rom@kabelnet.net) Received: from mta1.siol.net (mta1.siol.net [193.189.160.40]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 61E4743D49 for ; Sun, 4 Sep 2005 16:19:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ales.rom@kabelnet.net) Received: from edge1.siol.net ([10.10.10.210]) by mta1.siol.net with ESMTP id <20050904161952.EXXG1639.mta1.siol.net@edge1.siol.net>; Sun, 4 Sep 2005 18:19:52 +0200 Received: from [192.168.1.241] (really [193.77.178.206]) by edge1.siol.net with ESMTP id <20050904161951.GSRT18798.edge1.siol.net@[192.168.1.241]>; Sun, 4 Sep 2005 18:19:51 +0200 Message-ID: <431B1EA5.40109@kabelnet.net> Date: Sun, 04 Sep 2005 18:19:49 +0200 From: =?windows-1252?Q?Ale=9A?= User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.6 (X11/20050820) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org References: <431ACA22.4070900@kabelnet.net> <20050904184631.5a7cb68e.skywizard@MyBSD.org.my> <431ADCA9.9050404@kabelnet.net> <20050904235904.2a351cb5.skywizard@MyBSD.org.my> In-Reply-To: <20050904235904.2a351cb5.skywizard@MyBSD.org.my> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Cc: Ariff Abdullah Subject: Re: snd_via8233 - no volume control X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 04 Sep 2005 16:19:55 -0000 Ariff Abdullah wrote: >On Sun, 04 Sep 2005 13:38:17 +0200 >Aleš wrote: > > >>Yes, here is mixer otput: >> >>/usr/sbin/mixer >>Mixer vol is currently set to 84:84 >>Mixer pcm is currently set to 78:78 >>Mixer speaker is currently set to 59:59 >>Mixer line is currently set to 65:65 >>Mixer mic is currently set to 61:61 >>Mixer cd is currently set to 79:79 >>Mixer rec is currently set to 74:74 >>Mixer line1 is currently set to 49:49 >>Recording source: mic >> >>Ales >> >> >> >This probably will take some time. Thanks. I just found, that some sort of volume control is possible even now in xmms equalizer. With preamp (+/- 20dB) volume is affected just as expected. But xmms volume and balance doesn't work. Thanks again. I'm wondering if CMI9761 is similar to CMI9739A. I'm having the very same problem. I'm using kldload snd_ich to load the kernel module, could that be the problem? Thanks :) I just bought a Sweex 5.1 soundcard since my onboard-sound was a horrible disaster (5.1 channels, but only two available, and the volume could not be set except for on and off). The new card was cheap, so that can cause the problem I have now :) The card has an C-Media chip on it (C3DX, CMI8738) but is not detected by snd_cmi. Apparently, from what I read round and about, the CMI8738 should work like a charm on FreeBSD with snd_cmi loaded (which is partly why I bought it in the first place... apart from the money). Does anyone has any idea as to what to do to trace the problem? All I know is pciconf, which doesn't do me any good... It doesn't even show the darn thing (although it does show the onboard soundcard which is not recognized by the kernel, since I do not load the module any longer). kldstat shows me that snd_cmi is loaded, but I do not think that the problem is with the software at all. pciconf should always show the device, even if it cannot be detected by the kernel, right? Or should I somewhere put all the IRQ's in order? And how? The more I think about it, the more I fear the card itself is broken. Or is this a known problem with how Sweex solders the CMI8738 on their triplex? (Oh, btw, the card came with the sources for a Linux-driver from CMedia for the CMI8738. I'm not a C-programmer (yet) but could that be of any help?) Several outputs follow below... (hey, that's weird... the USB 2.0 controller seems to be undetected :) well, well... I DO learn from this! What's that, ehci?) regards, -- Frans-Jan v.
