Now it seems to compile successfully , but doesn't seem to work for me for some reason - the pcm0 device is not detected at boot time. I have attached the dmesg, but it just doesn't show any pcm0. What's strange to me is that kldstat shows that both modules are loaded: todorov-bsd-laptop# kldstat Id Refs Address Size Name 1 3 0xffffffff80100000 87afc8 kernel 2 1 0xffffffff8097b000 37cd8 sound.ko 3 1 0xffffffff93ea1000 1e19 snd_atiixp.ko todorov-bsd-laptop# Maybe you know what the problem could be? Thanks in advance. P.S: i can see sth strange in the dmesg: pci0: at device 20.2 (no driver attached) is that supposed to be the sound device? :) Regards, Angel On 12/18/05, Ariff Abdullah wrote: > > On Sun, 18 Dec 2005 13:51:45 +0200 > Angel Todorov wrote: > > Hi Ariff, > > > > Thanks for the reply. The rest: I don't know whether this driver used to work before contigmalloc(9) behavior changes but it works here after the change(with/without my patch). > 1) Excessive inlining - maestro.c won't survive if WARN=1. Inlining > failure probably cause incorrect code generation. This need to be > addressed. Agreed. AFAIK the driver has the following issues on CURRENT. 1. use of msleep(9) in the driver. Since the driver does not know whether it has other locks held, I guess it should not use msleep(9). 2. As the driver directly changes PCI power state via pci_set_powerstate(9) the driver gets numerous LORs. I think it's job of bus layer and switching power state between start/stop/suspend and resume routine is questionable. 3. use of critical_enter(9)/critical_exit(9). I don't know whether the driver really need this calls as it alreay has a driver lock. 4. use of recursive mutex lock which should be elimited and locking is not complete. 5. DMA buffer management issues. Due to lack of documentation we may need to guess how to program APU/ASSP/WaveCache. 6. It seems that sometimes the driver fails to initialize codec. I guess this is the main reason users report broken driver. My patch shamefully borrowed Linux's magic initialization code but it didn't help. 7. As you said, excessive inlining : this can be easily removed. The patch at http://people.freebsd.org/~yongari attempts to address all issues except 5 and 6. > 2) Delayed interrupt hook - few drivers (ich, atiixp) need to delay > further chip initialization in order to let interrupt works first. > I cannot tell whether this is the right solution, but probably > worth a try. > I can't sure but this is not the case for maestro(4) as PR submitter sees codec timeout messages(e.g. the user saw timeout message before serving the first interrupt request). > Anyway, I'll try to get the specific hardware first. -- Regards, Pyun YongHyeon From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 20 14:35:32 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7B54316A420 for ; Tue, 20 Dec 2005 14:35:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dmitry@atlantis.dp.ua) Received: from postman.atlantis.dp.ua (postman.atlantis.dp.ua [193.108.47.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F084D43D8E for ; Tue, 20 Dec 2005 14:35:17 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dmitry@atlantis.dp.ua) Received: from smtp.atlantis.dp.ua (smtp.atlantis.dp.ua [193.108.46.231]) by postman.atlantis.dp.ua (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id jBKEZ4oW096021; Tue, 20 Dec 2005 16:35:04 +0200 (EET) (envelope-from dmitry@atlantis.dp.ua) Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 16:35:04 +0200 (EET) From: Dmitry Pryanishnikov To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20051220162205.P90277@atlantis.atlantis.dp.ua> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Cc: Vaida Bogdan Subject: Re: fujitsu siemens no sound driver in sndstat X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 14:35:32 -0000 Hello! > Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 17:39:25 +0200 > From: Vaida Bogdan > > I just bought a Notebook Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pro V2040 Centrino 1.6GHz, > Linux > ( http://www.emag.ro/notebook/fujitsu...pAPED2040-9C3ZA ) and I can't > find a compatible sound card driver. > Same problem as with mine ASUS M5A: hardware vendor implemented only new-style Intel High Definition Audio: none2@pci0:27:0: class=0x040300 card=0x201717c0 chip=0x26688086 rev=0x04 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '82801FB/FR/FW/FRW Intel High DefiNition Audio Controller' class = multimedia and disabled old-style AC97 audio engine within chipset. FreeBSD sound driver doesn't support Intel HDA yet. You can try NetBSD 3.0 RC6 (or wait for 3.0 release), it claims Intel HDA support (see azalia(4)). I wonder whether it would be easier to port HDA support from NetBSD than create it from scratch... Sometime ago I decided to install my Voodoo 3 3000 on the AGP expansion slot to use it to improve the performance of X. So I recompiled the kernell including tdfx driver in it, and as I read on the documentation it would add a voodoo device on my devices under /dev. It figures that nothing happens, but the driver is there when I run kldstat # kldstat Id Refs Address Size Name 1 16 0xc0400000 427988 kernel 2 2 0xc0828000 1d4fc sound.ko 3 1 0xc0846000 4664 snd_t4dwave.ko 4 14 0xc084b000 56270 acpi.ko 5 1 0xc1640000 2000 dragon_saver.ko 6 1 0xc1649000 17000 linux.ko 7 1 0xc18b5000 8000 sis.ko 8 1 0xc1ba4000 6000 tdfx.ko Can anybody tell what is wrong? Intel's HDA is _not_ a different codec, but a completely new design of the sound engine. Linux and NetBSD people have already written support for that engine, our haven't yet. Also, I don't like Intel's police to license all HDA implementations, read http://www.intel.com/standards/hdaudio/ Implementation of the High Definition Audio Specification requires a license from Intel. Contributors to the High Definition Audio Specification have signed the High Definition Audio (Azalia) Developers Agreement and have provided input to the specification under the terms outlined in that agreement. Implementers that have signed the High Definition Audio Specification (Azalia) Adopter Agreement are licensed to produce products based on the specification under a reciprocal, royalty-free license to certain intellectual property rights from Intel and other Contributors and Adopters for their products that are compliant with the licensed versions of the High Definition Audio Specification. It sounds somehow restrictive, doesn't it? But NetBSD people have done it, so I think FreeBSD people should be able to do it also. There is an increasing bunch of new Intel's hardware which provides HDA as the only sound option, there is simply no other way around it. If you are only interested in "better" 2D X11 performance you'll need the "tdfx" as the "Driver" in the X11 config's "Device" section (/etc/X11/XFree86.conf or more recently /etc/X11/xorg.conf). The voodoo 3/4/5 supports 3D opengl acceleration in XFree86 or X.org's implementation of X11, for which you need the "tdfxdrm" kernel module, the device nodes for that appear in /dev/dri/ when the card is detected and the kernel module loaded. You'll need to have 'load "dri"' and 'load "glx"' in the X11 config's "Module" section. For 3D acceleration you'll also need the x11-servers/driglide or graphics/glide3 port (not sure which you'll have in your ports tree) installed. Note that the voodoo3 only supports opengl in 16bit color depth with the DRI. The voodoo3 is getting a bit dated hardware wise. http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ should have some notes about it. Here's one: - when you do 'make install', you will se the message about rebuilding the kernel (which is good). Note however, that at this point, the cxm_iic and cxm modules are installed to /boot/kernel. So when you make a new kernel, they get moved to /boot/kernel.old You reboot and try to 'kldload cxm_iic', but get an error message becasu there are no such module in the new /boot/kernel. Several kernel configurations have been tested. The motv program (a part of the multimedia/xawtv port) has been used for tests with the following settings: TV norm - SECAM, frequency table - russia.
