I have to different setups where digital flat panels are attached to the analog (secondary) outputs of differnet Radeon-based cards. In both setups the selected resolution matches the monitor's native and the timings are selected based on DDC data obtained from the monitors. The monitors are from different makers (Dell, Planar). In both setups, the monitor attached via a VGA cable is showing distinctly worse picture, than its twin, that is attached to the DVI. It is particularly noticable during the initial X startup (the waves go up and down X's black-and-blue grid). I know, DVI is supposed to be better than VGA, but not this much better... Is there a trick, perhaps, some Option of the radeon driver? Thanks! Actually apparently DVI is that much better. I get same flicker with Samsung flat panel on nvidia both under X (same on FreeBSD and SUSE) and under Windows (XP and Server 2003 FWIW). With DVI the picture is excellent. So I would think this is not as much problem with X. If however anyone has some magic setup options, I'd welcome them as well :) And yes it gets more bearable depending on color/texture of background. The grid on X startup is designed to be difficult on monitors... Thanks! Actually apparently DVI is that much better. I get same flicker with Samsung flat panel on nvidia both under X (same on FreeBSD and SUSE) and under Windows (XP and Server 2003 FWIW). With DVI the picture is excellent. So I would think this is not as much problem with X. Currently, each port Makefile has to make a choice as to which actual file to use to depend on to bring in the dependency, eg: ${X11BASE}/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/crox1c.pcf.gz:${X_FONTS_CYRILLIC_PORT} The left hand side of this has two drawbacks, first that it requires an awful lot of typing, and second, there is no consistency across port Makefiles, which may make things fail rather badly if, in this case, crox1c.pcf.gz disappeared from the plist of X_FONTS_CYRLLIC_PORT. The proposed solution: 1. For each X_*_PORT variable, there is an associated X_*_DEPENDS variable, in this case it would be: X_FONTS_CYRILLIC_DEPENDS= ${X11BASE}/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/crox1c.pcf.gz All port Makefiles would then look like: ${X_FONTS_CYRILLIC_DEPENDS}:${X_FONTS_CYRILLIC_PORT} and either of these variables would only have to be changed in one place to update every single port in the tree that uses them. 2. An extension of (1) above: X_FONTS_CYRILLIC_DEPENDS= ${X11BASE}/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/crox1c.pcf.gz:${X_FONTS_CYRILLIC_PORT} The port Makefile would then simply change to, eg: RUN_DEPENDS= ${X_FONTS_CYRILLIC_DEPENDS} The advantages here are less bits to type in the port Makefile, but it's possible that portlint and friends would have to be updated to handle this type of system (though it does already handle the common usage of RUN_DEPENDS= ${BUILD_DEPENDS} Thoughts? Please do cc me on any followups, I have to try and keep my subscriptions down to a fairly sane level, and this is more of an infrastructal thing than an actual X11 issue. I tried adding same part of code used by 'keyboard' driver and then tried a couple of variations on the theme. Didn't get it to work. Then I tried 'keyboard' driver and leds apparently don't work there either. I didn't even notice that before... Since xorg-server port works on sparc64 as it is now, I'd try to avoid bumping revision for this change only for now and if possible bundle it with possible other fixes should any be needed before ports are frozen for FreeBSD 6.0 release. If no other fixes are needed I'd commit this and bump revision just before the freeze so there are updated packages for release. How does this sound? Dejan
