Have not tried with other versions or OSes (have OpenBSD & Scientific Linux easily available and can try if that'd be helpful). This uses the Tyan 2865 mainboard. I have a couple machines that use this board. The BIOS that ships is bogus- machines wouldn't boot (don't remember the details of why since it's been a while now). Updating the BIOS fixes it. Just built a couple of these last week and noted the most recent BIOS is dated March 2006. You might want to double check Sun's site and see if they've released updates. -- Best regards, Ken Gunderson Q: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. I also miss CPU temperature (still UP, it seems ASUS changed SuperIO chip on newer revisions (don't remember ITE's part number for that chip). Are there any drivers I could test? Please apply kern/94939 and tell me if shutdown(8) with -r or reboot(8) works for you. My suspicion is that it will. Also, you may be interested in kern/94822, as FreeBSD won't hang on start-up attaching atkbd(4). If you're working on Intel SBX82 blades, specifically, kern/94833 and bin/94815 may also be interesting to you. Please leave me cc'ed to this thread as I don't subscribe to this list. But even a 30 minute job could involve over a day to wait for scheduling or due to time differences. Thank you for your kind email. I am not sure why some of the other emails were rude. Off-topic but to respond to mails from this list: Also, it is common for consultants/tech support to work remotely on systems that are owned by people who have no related skills or knowledge at all. I have many remote customers who have undocumented systems installed by admins that have been fired, layed off, or gone. Sometimes they do not even know the operating system or software they use. In my case, the system was installed by a knowledgable network administrator who happened to install the common (and frequently available[1]) "i386" disk on a 64-bit system. He was new to FreeBSD, and since his system was "Intel" not "AMD" and since the CD booted and installed fine, it made sense to him. If possible, some output in dmesg that said something like "AMD64 should be used for this system" and "This system appears to have multiprocessors so consider using options SMP" could be useful for even a novice. Jeremy C. Reed p.s. Thanks to FreeBSD Mall and others, I have handed out hundreds of "i386" disks at various events. If possible, some output in dmesg > that said something like "AMD64 should be used for this system" and "This > system appears to have multiprocessors so consider using options SMP" > could be useful for even a novice. I'm afraid I have to disagree. Such "hints" could be very misleading, _especially_ for a novice. Wether amd64 should be used on a particular system is a decision which should be made by the admin (or whoever installs the system), depending on various things. It is _not_ as simple as "this is amd64 hardware, so you should run FreeBSD/amd64". That would be plain wrong. Running amd64 has advantages as well as disadvantages. There are a lot of things to take into account. There may be good reasons to run FreeBSD/i386 on amd64 boxes. Some people even might find a sentence like the above one frustrating or even offending, because they would _like_ to run amd64, but they can't because they need a certain piece of software that doesn't run on amd64. I think it would be okay if the i386 kernel printed a line that says something like "this processor supports running FreeBSD/amd64 (64bit mode), please refer to for cons and pros." It's similar with the SMP issue. First of all, it's not trivial to detect whether enabling SMP would be an advantage or not. Detecting SMP support of the hardware is one thing. Detecting if actually two or more processors are present is another thing (or two cores, or hyperthreading support, which are all different things with different advantages and disadvantages). If only one processor is present, enabling SMP can make performance worse because of the additional locking overhead. Also take into account that some high-end hardware such as Sun servers support enabling and disabling processors while the OS is running (even if FreeBSD doesn't support that yet, but it shouldn't be ruled out for the future), and even hot-swapping of CPU boards. So while there might be just one processor present or enabled when the system boots, more of them could be enabled later on. Another thing to keep in mind is that some drivers or kernel options might not be compatible with SMP. For example, the polling option used to be incompatible with SMP (I think that has been fixed). For a particular situation it could have made sense not to enable SMP because polling might be more beneficial. Just my two cents. Best regards Oliver -- Oliver Fromme, secnetix GmbH & Co. Following your advice, I've updated the BIOS, which is now at version 1.07 (from Sun's supplemental disk version 1.2 [0]). This BIOS version seems to be from January '06 rather than March '06. Sadly, I'm still getting the BTX loader error when trying with 6.1- BETA4 amd64. As I noted in the gnats entry, a snapshot of OpenBSD 3.9 amd64 runs quite happily, which would be fine for my purposes except that I need jails. Does anyone have any further suggestions or a more recent BIOS flash that they could send my way? The strange problem I had was that when the boot loader would load it would crash if I didn't touch any key on the keyboard. The last thing I saw, before it crashed was it reading the /boot/loader.conf off the CD. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to read the crash, as the screen at that point was unreadable. I suspect that the point in which it crashed was when it was loading the kernel, but before it displayed the message that it was loading /boot/kernel/kernel. This problem occured with both the FreeBSD/AMD64 boot-only and disc1 install CD-ROMs. Thinking that I may need to disable something with acpi, I tried to break into the boot loader by pressing the space bar repeatedly. But it wouldn't break into the boot loader, instead it loaded the kernel and I was able to install FreeBSD/AMD64 6.1-Beta 4. Once I had FreeBSD/AMD64 6.1-Beta 4 installed, I was able to repeatedly boot the system from the Hard Drive without the boot loader crashing. Anyone else have a problem with the AMD64 install CDs? I'm running my "multipurpose gateway" on an A8V-MX w/ an Athlon 3800+. The sound and ethernet work fine on 6.1 and it has been stable for me so far. If you want to use X (at least THIS release) you'll need another video card. I use it for a "multipurpose gateway", so I can't give my final opinion until it has a few hundred days of uptime on it. -- This .signature sanitized for your protection From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 31 21:00:42 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8AAA216A400 for ; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 21:00:42 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D2A3343D7C for ; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 21:00:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k2VL0Wcw078399 for ; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 21:00:32 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k2VL0W1h078398; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 21:00:32 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2006 21:00:32 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200603312100.k2VL0W1h078398@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Anthony Lau Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5613416A42A for ; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 20:51:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0CD5743D53 for ; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 20:51:26 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id k2VKpP3R011400 for ; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 20:51:25 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id k2VKpP1Q011399; Fri, 31 Mar 2006 20:51:25 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200603312051.k2VKpP1Q011399@www.freebsd.org> Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2006 20:51:25 GMT From: Anthony Lau To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: amd64/95167: driver for SuperMicro H8DAR-T (Adaptec AIC-8130: (Marvell 88SX6041) 4-port Hercules-2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2006 21:00:42 -0000 >Number: 95167 >Category: amd64 >Synopsis: driver for SuperMicro H8DAR-T (Adaptec AIC-8130: (Marvell 88SX6041) 4-port Hercules-2 >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: high >Responsible: freebsd-amd64 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: update >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Fri Mar 31 21:00:31 GMT 2006 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Anthony Lau >Release: 6 >Organization: ASA Computers >Environment: FreeBSD 6 64bit >Description: To whom it may concern, I am looking for SuperMicro H8DAR-T driver with SATA chipset (Adaptec AIC-8130: (Marvell 88SX6041) 4-port Hercules-2. I remarked that when I run 2 simulation program [1], sometimes, one of them run one or several of its threads [2] very slowly, but sometimes, it doesn't occur. I remarked that is doesn't depend on SMP/UP, ULE/4BSD, i386/AMD64. It seems to occur also with the kernel stress test under the same conditions (all of them). In this case, the mouse is blocked, etc. I tested different kernels, and recorded the output of sysctl vm [3]. I increased vm.swap_async_max but this doesn't change the deal /a priori/. All that didn't occur with a Sempron64. All was slower but the mouse didn't blocked etc. This was a time ago, I may be wrong. It seems to be an architecture problem (??). I can give more quantitative data, but I need help to focus the tests... How much does it have and is the system using any swap space? I suspect that something is not working well in V5 or V6 with writing to/reading from swap. I have reported a similar problem and Kris K. asked me to try adjusting vm.swap_async_max, but the system has been replaced and I ave been having trouble getting a systems set up to test. (Disk died.) I hope to try Kris's suggestion next week, but your report makes this seem less likely. I can say that I don't see this on my new system which increased memory from 256MB to 1GB. Needless to say, it seldom has to use the swap file and I must agree that it seems tied to threaded processes. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O.
