I just got an Asus M2N-E wich has a NForce 570 chipset. Got 4 SATA disks (seagate 250G), and when i plug in all the 4 disks, FreeBSD cannot boot. It freeze when detecting the drives. i.e. ata2-master: pio=PIO4 wdma=WDMA2 udma=UDMA133 cable=40 wire ad4: xxxMB at ata2-master SATA150 ad4: xxxxxxxxsectors [] ..... ad4: nVidia check1 failed ad4: Adaptec check1 failed ad4: LSI (v3) check1 failed ad4: LSI (v2) check1 failed ad4: FreeBSD check1 failed ata3-master: pio=PIO4 wdma=WDMA2 udma=UDMA133 cable=40 wire ad6: xxxMB at ata3-master SATA150 ad6: xxxxxxxxsectors [] ..... aGEOM: new disk ad4 GEOM: new disk ad6 d6: nVidia check1 failed ad6: Adaptec check1 failed ad6: LSI (v3) check1 failed ad6: LSI (v2) check1 failed ad6: FreeBSD check1 failed ata4-master: pio=PIO4 wdma=WDMA2 udma=UDMA133 cable=40 wire ^-------- here it freeze forever. If i take some disks out, i.e. leave 1 disk. thigs works It happens the same when i boot from the harddisk or the installCD (for the 4 drives connected) Ive try to disable everything in the bois (including the IDE, USB, SATA Raid, etc). I did try to boot without acpi too. It looks like nforce5 are not supported jet is this true? If so, a better choose would be the VIA K8T890, right?... Ive try with the iso snapshots of STABLE and CURRENT of august. any tip is welcome. Thanks in advance. Did you try any of the suggestions in my previous mail? E.g.: use TCP NFS transport instead of UDP, and/or force NFSv2 instead of NFSv3. You could also try lowering the MTU (although I think it's not the cause of the problem in your case, but it might be worth a try nonetheless). What are your NFS mount options? What is the size of the file on which the mount became stuck? Do the contents of the file matter? i.e. when you create a file of the same size with dd(1) that contains only zeroes, can you copy it to the NFS share? A bit of tcpdump output might be helpful, too. Please use the options "-vv -s1600", otherwise it's useless. > I nearly lost a really really important pdf > which was generated online and my browser became stuck on showing me the > "save as" dialog... If it happens again, you can mount the NFS share again over the same mount point. Of course that's only an emergency measure, not a solution (and it won't help if an application is accessing the offending file again). Best regards Oliver -- Oliver Fromme, secnetix GmbH & Co. Note that this problem was only manifesting on *VERY CURRENT* (i.e. updated within the last few days) RELENG_6 and with the latest ports. If you're testing on older versions, that only confirms that it used to work previously. Anyway, based on subsequent testing the problem seems to only be sporadic, which will make it much harder to diagnose. Mount options are: tcp,soft,nfsv3,bg,rw This time it was during playing music from nfs and scping a large file from nfs to another system - so I can't tell this time what exactly caused it. It is almost working: too bad as soon as the SATA disks are probed, the system is overflowed by a massive interrupt storm. > Ive try with the iso snapshots of STABLE and CURRENT of august. 7-CURRENT with one disk only is able to complete setup (very slowly), though the problem is still present (try vmstat -i). 6-STABLE completely HANG as per your report. The same does 7-CURRENT with more than one ATA channel used: i.e. you can boot if you put two disks on ports SATA1 and SATA2 (ata2 master and slave), but it hangs if you try SATA1 and SATA3 (ata2-master and ata3-master). Unfortunately there wasn't any ack from interested party (I suspect it may be linked to ATA-SATA and/or ACPI routing of IRQ), so I think there are no developers in possess of that MB. Angelo. This week I was in the process of ordering a new server with several Areca RAID controllers. In advance I checked the Areca website for the amd64 tools (the cli32 pendant) mentioned in the arcmsr(4) manpage in FreeBSD 6.1. I could not find it and filled out the support form on their website [1] to ask about it. I got an answer the next day with the information, that they don't have it now, but engineers are developing it and that a beta should be ready in a few weeks. Two days later (aka today) I had a beta version in my mail. Now I'm waiting for the new server to arrive. [1] http://www.areca.com.tw/ In April I wanted to run FreeBSD/amd64 on a server with ICP-Vortex RAID controller (GDT models). Until this point, we were really happy with the ICP-Vortex controllers, with SCSI and SATA. The ICP-Vortex controllers are supported with FreeBSD/amd64, but the srcd and icpcon (to monitor and maintain the RAID) from ICP-Vortex are only available for 32-bit. I tried them to run on FreeBSD/amd64, but they could not connect to the controllers. I did sent an e-mail to their german support, but they will not support FreeBSD/amd64. So this forced me to install and run FreeBSD/i386 on this server. Back then, ICP-Vortex already belong to Adaptec. :( I also have some servers running with 3ware controllers. I did not ask for support yet. I use the tw_cli tool to maintain and monitor the RAID, but only with FreeBSD/i386 (as I don't have the "right" CPU in this servers for amd64). With small files or a lot of processes doing I/O the 3ware are slow compared to the ICP-Vortex. On one server I had a disk which failed, but with the hot spare disk, it started to rebuild automaticaly. At about 75% of rebuilding it was reporting ECC errors reading from an other disks. I did retry the rebuild with the IgnoreECC option, but this did again fail at the same point. I did not had any success in rebuild this RAID and was forced to move all the data and services to an other server. I was running this server several days with the degraded RAID in production without problems. Afterwards I even tried a reboot (and expected it to fail), but even this worked. I don't count this RAID failure as a failure of the 3ware controller. I think the 3ware did a good job in not taking out the other failing disk from the RAID and keept it running. As I then already had to rebuild the RAID from scratch, I decided to replace the 3ware with ICP-Vortex (as the CPU is only i386 capable) for better performance. Somehow I do not like to use the new "Adaptec" ICP-Vortex controllers, so I will try Areca for now, they sound promising. bye Fabian From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Sep 7 21:25:14 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D2EB916A4DA; Thu, 7 Sep 2006 21:25:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from killing@multiplay.co.uk) Received: from multiplay.co.uk (core6.multiplay.co.uk [85.236.96.23]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AA63043D80; Thu, 7 Sep 2006 21:25:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from killing@multiplay.co.uk) Received: from vader ([85.236.96.60]) by multiplay.co.uk (multiplay.co.uk [85.236.96.23]) (MDaemon PRO v9.0.1) with ESMTP id md50002970252.msg; Thu, 07 Sep 2006 22:24:00 +0100 Message-ID: <035701c6d2c3$eb574aa0$b3db87d4@multiplay.co.uk> From: "Steven Hartland" To: "Jo Rhett" References: <44EC0B9B.5020705@withagen.nl><003f01c6c68d$64688e60$b3db87d4@multiplay.co.uk> <20060907184316.GC56998@svcolo.com> Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2006 22:23:46 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2962 X-Spam-Processed: multiplay.co.uk, Thu, 07 Sep 2006 22:24:00 +0100 (not processed: message from valid local sender) X-MDRemoteIP: 85.236.96.60 X-Return-Path: killing@multiplay.co.uk X-MDAV-Processed: multiplay.co.uk, Thu, 07 Sep 2006 22:24:00 +0100 Cc: amd64@freebsd.org, stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: suggestions for SATA RAID cards X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2006 21:25:15 -0000 Jo Rhett wrote: > However keep in mind that Highpoint support is nearly clueless. I did have a little bother getting through to the dev's for support with a disk compatibility issue but once I located the right person highpoint support was very good. I believe you are wrong here and my own performance tests here backs this up, showing it keeps up with the more expensive areca in a number of areas notably, providing 180MB/s in sequential read tests from a 5 disk array. Obviously if your array is RAID10, the 180MB/s is very good! If you are using RAID0|5, then something is slowing you down (possible clash between disk firmware and the Areca, or unfortunate choice of strip chunk size). Another thing to check is that both systems have the same vfs.read_max sysctl tunable, as that makes quite a difference on RAID systems! If you have the time to keep playing with these machines, it might be interesting to try block sizes other than 1M - could expose different behavior too! Cheers Mark
