I believe this problem exists on all 6.0-6.1 RELEASE amd64 systems, and on the 6.2 RELENG tags. -DIAGNOSIS- How to check if you are effected: grep the 'nm -D /usr/lib/libm.so' output for 'ldexp'. You should get a line matching 'ldexpf', e.g.: # nm -D /usr/lib/libm.so | grep ldexp U ldexp 000000000000ff90 T ldexpf 000000000000ff70 T ldexpl If you do not find the ldexpf symbol, you are effected. -FIX- Required sources: The required version of src/lib/msun/src/s_scalbnf.c is 1.8 which has been included in all 6.x RELENGs. The required assembly version (src/lib/msun/amd64/s_scalbnf.S 1.2) _is_not_correct_ in _any_ RELEASE to date. It is correct in HEAD but not in 6.0, 6.1 or 6.2 RELENGs. (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/lib/msun/amd64/s_scalbnf.S). Build, Test, Install: After updating your s_scalbnf.S, you can 'make clean; make build' in src/lib/msun. Your new library will be /usr/obj/usr/src/lib/msun/libm.so.4. Check for ldexpf, as above. And 'make install' if the build worked. Note that this still needs to be fixed in the future releases, and that this is really a 'bad thing'. Thanks to Steve Kargl for getting me pointed in the right direction. -Kael From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 12 15:18:55 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8585816A52E; Tue, 12 Dec 2006 15:18:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost2.sentex.ca (smarthost2.sentex.ca [205.211.164.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B686943D82; Tue, 12 Dec 2006 15:16:59 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp1.sentex.ca (smtp1.sentex.ca [199.212.134.4]) by smarthost2.sentex.ca (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id kBCFIMNg019048; Tue, 12 Dec 2006 10:18:22 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp1.sentex.ca (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id kBCFIMNB013017; Tue, 12 Dec 2006 10:18:22 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 0EDAD73034; Tue, 12 Dec 2006 10:18:21 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20061212151822.0EDAD73034@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 10:18:21 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.88.1, clamav-milter version 0.88.1 on clamscanner3 X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on amd64/amd64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 15:18:55 -0000 TB --- 2006-12-12 13:10:00 - I didn't see any instructions or guidelines, so here goes: I am trying to install FreeBSD 6.1 (Amd64). I am a complete newbie, but I thought I would be able to do it following the FreeBSD Hand Book. Well, everything looked like it was going fine. I chose a language/country, set the auto configuration for the HDD partitions, and eventually got to the screen that asked me to choose which media to install from. I chose CD/DVD. Then, it gave me an error saying that the system could not detect my CD drive. Weird...since it seemed to know the drive was there to get me to that point. Right now, installing over FTP is not an option. I posted my problem in a FreeBSD forum, but no one seemed to have any solutions other than to send an email to the DL (as I am doing now). The drive I am trying to install off of is the (SATA) Plextor DVDRW (PX - 716A/SW) I have an ASUS A8N32-SLI mobo, an 80 Gb WD SATA HDD (where FreeBSD will go), a 150 Gb WD Raptor X (with Win XP currently installed), an AMD FX-60 dual-core proc (2.6Ghz), a GeForce 7900 GTX, 2GB Corsair memory, Sound Blaster X-Fi, etc... I cant think of any more parts that would make a difference. Thank you all in advance, ~Josh P.S. Remember, I am a NEWBIE!!! If anyone can think of anything that I could try to get this working, please give very specific steps. I dont know anything about Unix yet, so everything I do comes right from the steps in the manual. Thanks. The BIOS handles the original booting of the system. Do you have a regular ATA port on the machine that you could put an old CD or DVD drive on? Why isn't ftp an option? No network? I'm afraid I don't have another option for you. Maybe moving the distribution to some USB drive? For building a server system I would like to use the TYAN Tomcat n3400B motherboard (TYAN S2925G2NR). As far as I know, this motherboard utilises the nVidia nForce 3400 chipset which is similar, or even identical to the new nForce5XX chipsets introduced shortly. The main question is: will FreeBSD 6.2/amd64 work with this board? I need especially both NICs and the SATA-II RAID-0/Mirroring facilities. Thank you very much for your comments. Unmounting it and trying to fsck it > errors, as does mounting it by hand. Strange. I had recently build a system running FreeBSD/amd64 6.1-RELEASE with 3 Areca controller. 1x 4-port with 2x 80 GB Disks mirrored for the system disk and 2x 12-port with total 24x 500 GB Disks for the data partition. This system is used as a backup server. On each 12-port controller I created one raidset with all 12 disks (6000 GB) and on top of this one volume with RAID-6 (5000 GB). In FreeBSD I concatenated this two together with ccd using just the raw /dev/da1 and /dev/da2 devices. In the beginning, when I still could playing around with the system, I tried a few things. Once I also did try to use the raw 5000 GB disk exported from the controller, but I could not create partitions and slices on it, bsdlabel has a problem with partitions over 1 TB. Maybe this is the problem you are running into. Maybe you could try using ccd with just one disk. The other large filesystem (from 4.5 TB to almost 10 TB) I already maintain also use ccd. They are running with 2x 12-port 3Ware and 3x 8-port ICP (older generation) controller for the data partitions. From the performance side of view I like the Areca very much, 'tar -zxf ports.tar.gz' takes only around 25 seconds (controller with BBU and write cache enabled, filesystem with ccd on the 24 disks on 2 controllers with RAID-6). 3Ware are slow with smaller files, and the new ICP (now Adaptec) are not supported with FreeBSD (which does not make me unhappy ;). The old ICP only support SATA-1, which today also is a minus. From Areca (ask the support) you can get the 64bit version of the cli tool for FreeBSD. When the world is build with 'WITH_LIB32=yes' in /etc/make.conf, also the cli32 tool will run. I also once installed FreeBSD/amd64 on a systems with only ICP controller. It runs just find, but the tool to monitor the RAID did not work, ICP/Adaptec does not have any 64bit version of it and does only support 32bit. So this forced me to install again with FreeBSD/i386 on that system. May it could run with the 'WITH_LIB32=yes' option in /etc/make.conf, but I did not know that back then. I don't remember exactly, but the tools from ICP complained first about some missing library, which I copied from a 32bit system, but in the end it complained about not being able to connect to the controller. > Are there any known issues with the driver on AMD64? I had > major issues with it on Linux/386 with large memory support > (it would behave equally strangely) that went away when I > took large memory support out, maybe there are some non 64 > bit safe parts common to both? I guess, on Linux you will need a very new 2.6.x Kernel to be able to use the Areca controller. Then the next problem could be support for filesystems over 2TB, which probably also need to be enabled. I also had some interesting effects with "disks" at around 3 TB on the ICP controller. The FreeBSD Kernel had the disks, but only with 2TB. It was easy to solve, on the ICP controller a RAID-5 can be split to 2 virtual disks which the OS then will see. As I used ccd anyway, this was no big deal. On the older 3Ware (8xxx) I could only create a RAID-5 with max 2TB (on the controller), so with 12x 250GB disks I had to build 2x 1.25TB RAID to export as disks to the OS. With the 9xxx 3Ware filesystem over 2TB where possible, but ended at around 2.5TB, which just worked with 12x 250GB disk and RAID-5. As I now know, building and using large (eg. over 2TB) filesystems always gives some headaches. Also doing a fsck on large filesystems can use a large amount of memory. Then the option 'kern.maxdsiz="2147483648"' (2GB) in /boot/loader.conf comes in handy. As default a process can only grow up to 512MB. If fsck starts to use swap, then you need more memory. I once let a fsck run which grow up to 1.5GB with 1GB memory, after around 24h it was not finished. I then put in more memory (+1GB) and restarted fsck, it was done in around 8 hours (4.5TB on the 8xxx 3Ware). I don't know how long a fsck on the Areca will take, I will see it, when I once have to do it. bye Fabian From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 15 00:03:03 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 245F316A4AB for ; Fri, 15 Dec 2006 00:03:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fabian@wenks.ch) Received: from batman.home4u.ch (batman1.home4u.ch [217.8.211.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5221F43CC5 for ; Thu, 14 Dec 2006 23:57:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fabian@wenks.ch) Received: from [62.2.85.181] (flashback.wenks.ch [62.2.85.181]) (authenticated bits=0) by batman.home4u.ch (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id kBENwvde082230 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Fri, 15 Dec 2006 00:58:58 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from fabian@wenks.ch) Message-ID: <4581E53C.2010001@wenks.ch> Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 00:58:52 +0100 From: Fabian Wenk User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 (Macintosh/20061025) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org References: In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new Cc: Subject: Re: System panic during boot from install cd X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 00:03:03 -0000 Hello Jeff jekillen wrote: > I have just finished assembling a new machine that uses: > MSI RX480 Neo2 motherboard w/ realtek ethernet chip builtin. > AMD64 socket 939 3500+ processor. > > When attempting to boot from the FreeBSD v6.0 install cd > the process is aborted with the following messages: > > re0 ehternet address 00:13:d3;a5:ad:89 > re0 diagnostic failed received short packet > re0 attach aborted due to hardware diag failure > kernel trap 12 with interrupts disabled Could you try with FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE or 6.2-RC1? It looks like the on board realtek ethernet is causing this problem. Maybe an BIOS update will help (should be available from MSI). Or else just take an other ethernet card and disable the onboard NIC. To test it, disable the onboard ethernet in the BIOS and try again. If it does boot fine, it is the NIC. This does not mean, that the NIC is broken, it could be that this realtek chip is to new and not yet fully supported from the FreeBSD driver. You also could try to boot with "ACPI disabled" or with "safe mode". Could you also try this with FreeBSD/i386? bye Fabian From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 15 13:17:32 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2973516A4D4 for ; Fri, 15 Dec 2006 13:17:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd-smp@epcdirect.co.uk) Received: from gunfright.epcdirect.co.uk (gunfright.epcdirect.co.uk [195.10.242.32]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D7D843CBF for ; Fri, 15 Dec 2006 13:15:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd-smp@epcdirect.co.uk) Received: from lfarr (l-farr.int.epcdirect.co.uk [192.168.6.200]) by gunfright.epcdirect.co.uk (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9A5D36C8807; Fri, 15 Dec 2006 13:16:50 +0000 (GMT) From: "Lawrence Farr" To: "'Fabian Wenk'" , Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 13:16:48 -0000 Message-ID: <00c201c7204b$48d40900$0200a8c0@lfarr> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook 11 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.3028 In-Reply-To: <4581D8B8.7090408@wenks.ch> Thread-Index: Accf1tWTHm9oDcX/TIiwvwTY5YddrQAS5jDw Cc: Subject: RE: Areca Weirdness X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 13:17:32 -0000 > -----Original Message----- > From: Fabian Wenk [mailto:fabian@wenks.ch] > Sent: 14 December 2006 23:05 > To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org > Cc: Lawrence Farr > Subject: Re: Areca Weirdness > > Hello Lawrence > > Sorry for the late answer, I hope it still can help you. > ** lots of helpful info cut from here ** > > > bye > Fabian > Hi Fabian, Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed reply! I created a 2Tb volume within the raid set and booted off that without issue in the end. On Linux and FreeBSD I had to use GPT support for the larger partitions. Coincidentally, the culprit of the mystery crashes that I was having may have been a dodgy power supply (it went off with an impressive bang yesterday). It had been fine on i386 booting directly from the Areca for a few weeks now tho. I recently bought a Dell E521. It runs XP with the normal problems :), I made it dual boot because eventually it should run FreeBSD and FreeBSD only. I tried FreeBSD 6.2, to no avail, even not with the USB ports disabled as suggested by Jean-Baptiste Quenot [1]. The results are the same as he describes. So I decided to go the brave way *cough* and get FreeBSD current /AMD64 as of 200611. I was able to boot, run the installer but it does not (as expected) understand the cdrom drive. However, it recognized the nic (bfe) so I could install over FTP from my other workstation. The install runs fine. After rebooting the system comes up fine. I installed cvsup, used the standard-supfile, ran cvsup, built world and a new GENERIC kernel. The system still boots fine (with mouse disconnected, that is). I compiled X, I am satisfied with the xorg 'nv' driver. Up till now I don't have problems with the mouse if I connect it after boot. Sound works as well (good job! :). So, my actual questions: 1) Since I could not find much info about problems with this machine after the post of Jean-Baptiste, I was wondering, is there still work being done on the USB-problems? 2) What is the status of de SATA driver for the CD/DVD player? The machine is not completely useless since it is dual boot, I am willing to do some tests (I am not a kernel programmer nor am I a low level hardware specialist). So if wanted, feel free to let me know. You're welcome. Probably it will also help others when building large file systems. > I created a 2Tb volume within the raid set and booted off that Ah, ok. Yes, the Areca controller have some interesting new ideas how you can use the disks in a RAID. In the first place, it looked strange to me, but then I realised how flexible it could be. Building a raidset without giving them any RAID level and then define the RAID level for the volume (the "disk" for the OS) which is build on the raidset. Even change (upgrade) a volume from eg. RAID-5 to RAID-6 is possible. If there are still empty ports on a controller, a raidset can be expanded with adding another disk. Expanding of a volume also is possible, but the OS then needs to grow the filesystem too. About the 2 TB disk size limit, on servers I always use the "DD" mode to build the partition, eg. without the DOS compatible MBR and boot loader. I guess then also a boot partition larger as 2 TB should be possible, but I did not try. In the servers with large filesystem I always have a separate RAID controller with only 2 small disks (80 GB) mirrored for the system. It is nice to have a system running at multiuser when in need do debug problems with the large filesystem / RAID. I have one server with a dual channel SCSI ICP RAID controller with 16x 140 GB disks (RAID-5 with 1 hot spare). The disk in FreeBSD is reported as "da0: 1963350MB (4020940980 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 250292C)". On the disk I have one slice ("DD" mode) with 6 GB /, 4 GB swap and 2x 950 GB data partitions, which works just fine, but maybe this is because its below 1 and 2 TB. > without issue in the end. On Linux and FreeBSD I had to use GPT > support for the larger partitions. Coincidentally, the culprit I did not know (or remember) about GPT, after some googling I found "Large data storage in FreeBSD" [1], but when I look a the tables, it seems that this page has not been updated anymore. [1] http://www2.ch.freebsd.org/projects/bigdisk/index.html When we built the first large (4.5 TB) filesystem in February 2004 with FreeBSD 5.2 we run into several problems which needed fine tuning (eg. reducing the number of inodes). But as of today, I have a 8TB filesytem running on FreeBSD/i386 6.1-RELEASE with quota (only to report, not to enforce) so far without problems. We still reduce the number of inodes, as the defaults are to much. > of the mystery crashes that I was having may have been a dodgy > power supply (it went off with an impressive bang yesterday). We also had strange problems with regular PCs.
