There is one extra right parenthesis at the end of the sentence: "The original page in B is now completely hidden since both C1 and C2 have a copy and B could theoretically be destroyed if it does not represent a “real” file)." The second one is in section 9 Bonus QA session by Allen Briggs, question 9.5. Finally, in the page coloring section, it might help to have a little more description of what you mean here. I did not quite follow it. In the sentence "If you access offset 0 in main memory and then offset offset 128K in main memory you can wind up throwing away the cached data you read from offset 0!" there is one extra word offset. >How-To-Repeat: Look at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/vm-design/vm-objects.html http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/vm-design/allen-briggs-qa.html#Q9.5. >Fix: Change: The original page in B is now completely hidden since both C1 and C2 have a copy and B could theoretically be destroyed if it does not represent a “real” file). There appears to be very little support for Spanish speaking users right now- I tried to browse the Spanish mailinglist ( https://listas.es.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo ) but the server was down. Furthermore, many users prefer web forums over a mailinglist. If I were to set up a Spanish FreeBSD forum, would this be viewed with acceptance or hostility by the community here? I found several simple domain names relating to Spanish and FreeBSD, and I am able to host the forums on a fairly reliable server. Anyone interested? I'm asking here because I don't want to go to the trouble and expense of setting this up if it won't be used. But if it would be used and mentioned officially as a FreeBSD support forum, I would be happy to do it. Please let me know! Thanks for your help. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. This is the same way the rc.conf work. Note, that the devfs.rules and devfs.conf are different files with completely different purposes. We certainly need to clarify this in the devfs(8) manual page (as a start it should be good to xref devfs.rules(5) and devfs.conf(5) manual pages in SEE ALSO at least). FreeBSD as a project won't sponsor it, but if there are enough people interested in this, there is no reason why it would not succeed. There are other forums out there such as bsdforums.org. I don't think yours would grow as big being that you are in a niche, but that is fine. After all it is about helping others, right? :) Regards, Brad Davis From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Sep 18 16:14:55 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 701DF16A597 for ; Mon, 18 Sep 2006 16:14:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from norgaard@locolomo.org) Received: from strange.daemonsecurity.com (59.Red-81-33-11.staticIP.rima-tde.net [81.33.11.59]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C967D43D64 for ; Mon, 18 Sep 2006 16:14:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from norgaard@locolomo.org) Received: from [192.168.7.193] (68.Red-80-34-55.staticIP.rima-tde.net [80.34.55.68]) by strange.daemonsecurity.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id B889D2E035; Mon, 18 Sep 2006 18:14:52 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <450EC5FA.2000103@locolomo.org> Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2006 18:14:50 +0200 From: Erik Norgaard User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 (Windows/20060909) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "S. I personally don't agree that web foras are preferred: The benefit of mail is that it pushes into your mailbox and you get all the messages in different foras as they arrive, no need to login and check each forum individually. Anyway, the worst thing would be fragmentation, please do an extra effort trying to contact people on the spanish mailinglist to coordinate. While www.es.freebsd.org is down, www.freebsd.es is UP! Erik, I agree with you that traditional mailing lists do have a big advantage. I'll try to contact the admin of the Spanish mailing list, as you mentioned. But I think you'd probably agree that some people prefer a web gui, especially if they only want occasional support. And actually, my preferred forum software, SMF, provides a way of posting via email, and users can opt-in for email notification of new replies. So it's really a pretty handy support method. Do you think there's any chance of getting the webmaster to just add a link to my forum on the page http://www.freebsd.es/es/support.html under web resources? I understand of course that FreeBSD will not give any other official support, as it is a 3rd party site, but as I said, I would like Spanish users to at least know that a spanish forum option exists, if I go through with this. By the way, this mailing list seemed to me to be the most relevant, since it relates to documentation. But if there's a more appropriate english list or contact, please let me know. I'd suggest removing the list, as it is completely outdated and as such totally misleading, as there are no indications on which date or for which release the list was compiled. It even does not list either configured tunnels (RFC 2893) or 6to4 (RFC 3056) as supported; I have no clue when support for both was integrated but posts to mailinglists regarding the gif and stf interfaces (which support 6to4 and tunnels) indicate the support for both is several years old by now. I'm eager to get the ball rolling :) Sorry for the delay[*]. I've discussed this briefly with a couple of doc committers and we're a bit unsure about how to proceed. My suggestion is that you (Paul and Duane) do something like this: 1. Start out by defining what areas you would like to work on, this way it'll be easier for us to know what we can expect. 2. Work together in some way, and keep your work synchronized. 3. Submit patches to doc@, and CC hackers@ or arch@ (but not both!) if you need some clever kernel hacker to review your work. Try to send small incremental patches, since it will be a lot easier for us to review and commit them that way. PR's may also be a good idea. If all this becomes a major PITA to handle, maybe we can discuss setting up p4 accounts etc. I'm very interested in getting the ball rolling, but I'd like to see some results (patches etc) before someone sets you up with p4 accounts. You would do the project a big favor if you are able to finish this project, and I am very much looking forward to start reviewing your patches. The Arch handbook has been lacking in content for far too long now. [*] /me kicks everyone in CVSROOT-doc/access. Am I the only interested in docs these days? If I were already a kernel architecture expert I might contemplate documenting two similar but different architectures but, as I am not, I would prefer to concentrate on the CURRENT kernel and its subsystems. My main interests include locking, threads, and scheduling. I'm not sure what to work on first; I need to cover mutex(9) and mtx_*[39] and the lockmgr(9) functions. Also I need to cover atomic variables and operations, why they are needed and when they are used. I also want to cover kernel organization, the distinction between threads and processes, scheduling of threads and processes, the idea of kernel preemption, kernel threads, user-land threads, and 1:1 threading versus M:N threading. I would also like to learn about and discuss the issue of whether one kernel architecture can do it all. Some of the issues effecting UP and UP small scale multi-core machines are probably different than the issues effecting multiprocessor multi-core massively threaded architectures. What are those issues and what type of kernel would best support each architecture or can one kernel do it all. The great thing is that most of this has been written already by others. It just needs, mostly, to be brought into one place.
