I've briefly looked into a race condition with if_grow() and I wonder if this is the case you're encountering. The problems only occur on disks connected to the VIA 82C596B UDMA66 controller. There have been no problems at all with the HighPoint controller. I have replaced the disk, motherboard, cables, ram and everything else but the problem does not go away. The one commonality is FreeBSD. I first noticed the problem when a moved from 4.11 to 5.4, and upgrading to 5.5-beta didn't fix the problem. Looking through the stable archives this was reported last year but there does not seem to be any resolution of the problem. Since it is limited to a specific controller, and is definitely DMA related, I assume that it is a bug in the controller handling code, but I don't know how to track it down. >How-To-Repeat: The problems only occur under heavy load with lots of reads and writes, such as a snapshot dump on a live filesystem or a large port compile. >Fix: Adding these lines to loader.conf completely solves the corruption problem: $ grep ata /boot/loader.conf hw.ata.wc=0 hw.ata.ata_dma=0 Unfortunately it also slows disk IO to 20% of previous and loads CPU with interrupt waits all the time. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sat May 27 13:20:24 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E61CF16A52B for ; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:20:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5CCD243D4C for ; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:20:24 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k4RDKORF039219 for ; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:20:24 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k4RDKO8x039218; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:20:24 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sat, 27 May 2006 13:20:24 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200605271320.k4RDKO8x039218@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Marek <0utsider@wp.pl> Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C97B16A4CA for ; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:14:42 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 282C343D46 for ; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:14:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id k4RDEfD6048745 for ; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:14:41 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id k4RDEfJ8048744; Sat, 27 May 2006 13:14:41 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200605271314.k4RDEfJ8048744@www.freebsd.org> Date: Sat, 27 May 2006 13:14:41 GMT From: Marek <0utsider@wp.pl> To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: i386/98010: Transmission error during instalation X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 27 May 2006 13:20:29 -0000 >Number: 98010 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: Transmission error during instalation >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sat May 27 13:20:23 GMT 2006 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Marek >Release: 6.0 and 6.1 >Organization: >Environment: ? >Description: There is a transmission error during instalation that tells -1 bytes were copied.
