Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports listed in this email are ports that depend on one or more of the ports that are scheduled to be removed, but are not yet themselves on the list. However, once those ports are removed, these ports will then become broken, and thus the reason for this email. However, in the first 36 hours, it crashed twice (diablo-jdk1.5.0_06). We then upgraded the JVM to the latest and the greatest version diablo-jdk1.5.0_07. It ran flawless for 30 hours, and then crashed again suddenly. By restarting the tomcat-instance manually it runs again for some time, but the crashes seem to appear at random. Below the log created by the JVM for detecting the 'unexpected error'. Is this a bug, or shoud we disable/enable some JVM-opts ? Thanx in advance # # An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x426c5fb6, pid=1869, tid=0x8672200 # # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM I added the JVM-parameter -XX:+UseMembar now, but i understand that the diablo-1.5.0_7 has this turned on by default, so that probably doesn't help (the server hasn't crashed since though, but is only up for 10 hours, so not conclusive). It is a 2-processor machine though: does that require tuning ? Some ideas: 1) check your datasize ulimit for the login class of the user tomcat is running under. 2) set the X malloc() option (ln -s X /etc/malloc.conf) and see if you get a diagnostic message as to why malloc() is returning NULL. 3) watch the java process memory utilization over time with top or ps -l and look for increasing memory usage. > I added the JVM-parameter -XX:+UseMembar now, but i understand that the > diablo-1.5.0_7 has this turned on by default, so that probably doesn't > help Correct > (the server hasn't crashed since though, but is only up for 10 > hours, so not conclusive). > > It is a 2-processor machine though: does that require tuning ? Also just to clarify... the recently released diablo binaries contain all the corrections in the port version of the jdk plus a few new ones that need to get committed back to the port version. You won't see the SMP SIGBUS on the port version since that was a result of an multiprocessor optimization Sun did after the initial release of 1.5. The size started at 450M (res 100M) and after 6 hours increased to 600M (res 160M). I can imagine that if that continues another 10 hours, the 1 Gb limit is reached causing crash. Tomcat however read lower memory-usage, but that will be memory within the JVM-reserved memory, which differs from the process-memory in FreeBSD (I presume). Could it be a memory leak ? Or is this increase normal because it contains cached memory which can be freed when nescessary ? And where could I see the diagnostic message for the malloc() function ? Right, tomcat reported memory usage doesn't account for memory the jvm uses in addition to the java object heap. Hmmm, looking over the original bug report I don't see -Xmx or -Xms arguments being used. Also, it could take some time for the java process memory utilization to stabilize. Even after it stabilizes there is some fluctuation when full GC's occur. For the sake of minimizing some of these issues, try running tomcat with -Xmx250m -Xms250m so that all of the java heap is allocated upfront and then look for increasing java process memory usage after things stabilize. > > Could it be a memory leak ? It does sound like you've found a leak. Now the hard part is isolating it. It would be helpful to know if you see the same behavior with the port version of the jdk. This would reveal if the leak is new or not. If you could try to isolate the leak to simple test program that would be helpful. The last time I hunted down a leak in the jdk I had a test program to work with. The process is tedious - track each malloc and match it up with a free. Attempting to do that on tomcat with a full blown web app would be impossible. The catalina log just says: java in malloc(): error: out of memory Furthermore, no hs_err_pidXXXX.log files created by the way. I saw the java-process reach the 1 Gb limit in top, and then dissapear. Glad you diagnose it as memory-leak. I use the lambdaprobe monitor application on tomcat, which uses quite some resources (www.lambdaprobe.org). I now undeployed it, hoping the leak is caused by this monitoring-app instead of our webapp. If problem continues, I check other ports.
