I used jdk1.4.2 and diablo-jdk1.5.0 and successfully compiled without any problem, ob course WITHOUT_MOZILLA. I run through and found that "Eclipse Platflorm Plug-in Developer Resources 3.2.0v20060909m-BBt47n6hlEUsvBO" under "Product Configulation" gives 'Plug-in "org.eclipse.platform.source.freebsd.gtk.x86" version "3.1.1" referenced by this feature is missing.' It builds and installs successfully. I have compiled and run a simple java application and all worked as expected. I have also installed the RDT ruby plugin and the RadRails plugin without any problems. Please give it a try, I have not found any errors with it so far. I was also planning on working some of the patches into the main eclipse stream if able to make porting easier on the next release of eclipse. I made the port directory eclipse3.2 so that eclipse 3.1.2 can still be installed if people have problems with the new version. I have attached the shar file for people to try it out. I would like to submit the pr sometime tomorrow unless a problem is uncovered. Let me know asap if you see any problems. Also, would it be better to submit it as an update to the existing eclipse port or leave it as a new port eclipse3.2? I only have it supporting gtk x86 and gtk amd64 right now. I did not add support for motif. I was planning on adding that as an update to the port later if someone needs it to run it with motif instead of gtk. ------=_Part_33286_8768529.1154409751480-- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Aug 1 05:24:05 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 815BF16B442; Tue, 1 Aug 2006 05:22:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mv@thebeastie.org) Received: from p4.roq.com (ns1.ecoms.com [207.44.130.137]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1825D43D45; Tue, 1 Aug 2006 05:22:48 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mv@thebeastie.org) Received: from p4.roq.com (localhost.roq.com [127.0.0.1]) by p4.roq.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 031C24CEE2; Tue, 1 Aug 2006 05:23:12 +0000 (GMT) Received: from vaulte.jumbuck.com (ppp166-27.static.internode.on.net [150.101.166.27]) by p4.roq.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99EAF4CED7; Tue, 1 Aug 2006 05:23:11 +0000 (GMT) Received: from vaulte.jumbuck.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by vaulte.jumbuck.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id C14028A029; Tue, 1 Aug 2006 15:22:46 +1000 (EST) Received: from [192.168.46.102] (unknown [192.168.46.250]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by vaulte.jumbuck.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id BD1D48A027; Tue, 1 Aug 2006 15:22:46 +1000 (EST) Message-ID: <44CEE526.60603@thebeastie.org> Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2006 15:22:46 +1000 From: Michael Vince User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD amd64; en-US; rv:1.7.13) Gecko/20060727 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Greg Lewis References: <44C47D64.6010804@thebeastie.org> <20060725150931.GA31017@misty.eyesbeyond.com> <44C6B826.5080308@thebeastie.org> <20060726144831.GA40775@misty.eyesbeyond.com> In-Reply-To: <20060726144831.GA40775@misty.eyesbeyond.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV using ClamSMTP X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV using ClamSMTP Cc: freebsd-performance@freebsd.org, freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: AMD64 Diablo 1.5 JDK and libthr X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2006 05:24:05 -0000 Greg Lewis wrote: >On Wed, Jul 26, 2006 at 10:32:38AM +1000, Michael Vince wrote: > > >>Greg Lewis wrote: >> >> >>>On Mon, Jul 24, 2006 at 05:57:24PM +1000, Michael Vince wrote: >>> >>> >>>>I just ran it for you now, lower then the others. >>>>libc_r average hits per minute: 6,859 >>>>libc_r session average: 3,441 >>>>libc_r transactions per minute: 2,310 >>>> >>>> >>>Is the machine UP or SMP? >>> >>> >>> >>SMP, it was rebuild using a generic 6.1 SMP kernel for all these tests, >>with HT turned off. >>I did actually record load numbers per minute and Java memory usage. That is not a good idea to have two versions of Eclipse in our ports tree because there are 26 ports depending on Eclipse. I can only speak for myself, but I think the motif version is ugly. I also think if people are running heavy software like eclipse they have enough cpu power to compile gtk. I just missed going back to fix it. It is now fixed and the shar file has been updated on the web server. * Also, I'm wondering why you set a requirement on JDK 1.5 whereas Eclipse only requires JDK 1.4 for runtime. And compiling with JDK 1.5 is known not to work, I wonder how you could build it successfully. I was actually getting errors compiling with the original settings. I then realized that the error I was getting was coming from something that changed with jdk 1.5. Can't remember what exactly it was with trying to recompile that way. The problem was compiling from jdk1.5 to a lower version so I bumped it up to jdk1.5. * You added a pkg-plist file, this is not necessary I added the pkg_plist because I was getting errors during the "make deinstall" about removing some of the files in the eclipse directory an thus leaving the directory behind. By adding the pkg_plist file that problem was resolved. * The motif stuff is stripped out, but personnally I don't care I know. * There is a small error in idReplacer of patch-features-rcp-build.xml: on line 32 replace linux with freebsd. Missed that one, it is now fixed and the shar file has been updated on the web server. * Did you make the mozilla stuff work? As far as I can tell mozilla stuff is working. I am not defining "WITHOUT_MOZILLA" and I am seeing no trouble. Let me know if it does not work for you or I am totally missing something. Thanks for all your input and comments. This is my first time updating a port for FreeBSD so I'll take any help I can get to be a better contributor. Does it really matter? Are there any package issue? To be more clearly, it seems to me that runtime and hotspot have different version. build diablo-1.5.0-b00 ---------- "1.5.0" on Runtime Environment. build diablo-1.5.0_07-b00 ---- "1.5.0 update 7" on the HopSpot Client VM. I have built it on my computer at work (HP xw9300 AMD Opteron w/ x86 version of FreeBSD 6.1) and on my laptop (PIII 500 Intel again x86 version of FreeBSD 6.1) at home. I compiled, installed and ran your port successfully. However, you pass ${LOCALBASE}/diablo-jdk1.5.0 to Eclipse build. How do you know the diablo jdk is installed? You better use ${JAVA_HOME} instead. If you want to force using the Diablo JDK and not the bsdjava one, specify JAVA_VENDOR=freebsd in the Makefile. That would maybe be safer as I experienced build failures when using jdk-1.5.0p2_3 instead of diablo-jdk-1.5.0.06.00. Another question: do you really mean to be the maintainer of Eclipse? That may be a lot of work, be prepared to receive a reasonable number of PRs ;-) Just a last one: why are you commenting out the MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME and following line in eclipse startup script? Just curious. I have managed and overcome many technical obstacles so far, such as gjdoc that I had to comment out of the Makefile, but the following one beats me. At some point the build complained about jdk 1.3 or later required. jdk 1.5 and 1.4 won't build on 4.11 with the following error: ===> Extracting for linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.12 => MD5 Checksum OK for j2sdk-1_4_2_12-linux-i586.bin. ===> linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.12 depends on file: /compat/linux/etc/fedora-release - found ELF binary type "0" not known. Abort trap *** Error code 134 Stop in /usr/ports/java/linux-sun-jdk14. Linux emulator (Fedora) is built from ports and linproc is mounted. jdk 1.3, however, compiles successfully. But even with jdk 1.3 available, there are two problems: 1. without the parameter WITH_GNUGCJ openoffice.org build still tries to compile jdk 1.5 then stops the build on the forementionned problem when it tries to set up me the linux jdk. 2. with the parameter DWITH_GNUGCJ package, openoffice.org doesn't see the jdk1.3 that is there and stop building with the same error than before I set it: checking whether to build with Java support... yes checking the installed JDK... configure: error: JDK is too old, you need at least 1.3 ===> Script "configure" failed unexpectedly. Now I know 4.11 isn't supported to run ooo 2.0 but I've got that old laptop that won't run any other OS and I'd like compatibility with ooo 2.0 from my other machines, so any help would be greatly appreciated. How can I strip the ooo to build to the bare working minimum (word processor, presentation and spreadsheet) to achieve a successful build? i.e. how do i shortcut the java build? However, you pass ${LOCALBASE}/diablo-jdk1.5.0 to Eclipse build. How do you know the diablo jdk is installed? You better use ${JAVA_HOME} instead. Fixed If you want to force using the Diablo JDK and not the bsdjava one, specify JAVA_VENDOR=freebsd in the Makefile. That would maybe be safer as I experienced build failures when using jdk-1.5.0p2_3 instead of diablo-jdk-1.5.0.06.00. Fixed - great idea Another question: do you really mean to be the maintainer of Eclipse? That may be a lot of work, be prepared to receive a reasonable number of PRs ;-) I thought I would give it a try and see how it goes. I figured better to try and maintain it if possible instead of it being another port out there without a maintainer. Is it really a bad idea to do this? Please let me know and I will change it back before I submit it. I know I will get requests and questions but since I have not been watching the mailing list that long I have no idea how many PRs or problems come in for eclipse. The Current "Problem Report List" on FreeBSD's website only shows 4 PRs when searching for eclipse. That is why I thought it would be manageable. Please let me know if I am getting in over my head? Just a last one: why are you commenting out the MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME and following line in eclipse startup script? Just curious. All the best, From what I could find this was a workaround to make mozilla, or I believe firefox really, work for eclipse 3.1.2 or earlier on linux and unix systems . If you leave it enabled for eclipse 3.2 it results in the following error when hovering the mouse over a class in the editor, like "String" for example. /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/home//.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.2.0/ configuration/org.eclipse.osgi/bundles/91/1/.cp/libswt-mozilla-gtk-3232.so: Und efined symbol "NS_InitEmbedding" I found one more problem when looking under the "manage configuration" window f or the Eclipse Platform Plug-in resource. That has now been fixed. The eclipse. shar file has been updated on the web site at [1]http://www.freshdevonrails.com /eclipse.shar . I think that we got it this time. I have not seen or heard of a ny more problems. The shar fails for me: ===> Building for eclipse-3.2 The os-ws-arch combination of freebsd-gtk-amd64 is not valid. I suggest it not be put into ports without amd64 support. Also, support packages should be available. Currently, I have eclipse-3.1.2 eclipse-cdt-3.0.2 eclipse-emf-2.1.1 eclipse-gef-3.1.1 all installed and properly working on my amd64 system. Currently I am running FreeBSD x86 on my amd64 computer due to other problems I was having with the 64bit version of FreeBSD 6.0. I will switch my computer over to FreeBSD 6.1 amd64 version and start debugging the port on the amd64 platform. Has anyone tested any of the ported plugins (like eclipse-cdt-3.0.2) against my shar yet?
