This worked well except that NetBSD does NOT do NFS file locking (it seems) and therefore anything that wanted a file lock failed. Think cron and vipw for two examples. You already have rarp and bootparam or dhcp set up and working, right? Replace the netbsd boot.net with boot/loader Make a directory somewhere and export it to your ultra >From the iso image step over each of the directories in 6.0-RELEASE. In most of them there is a handy install.sh file which is slightly wrong for what you need to do, but gives you the idea. In the base directory, for example, cd /you/exported/root/filesystem; cat /cdrom/6.0-RELEASE/base/base.?? | tar xzpf - Repeat for all of the other directories in 6.0-RELEASE that you wish to install. edit etc files to your hearts content boot net the ultra. Re edit etc files boot net and repeat until you are happy. The email exchange that seemed to answer most of my questions starts at: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-sparc64/2005-October/003519.html good luck! cheers bruce On Sun, Dec 25, 2005 at 03:26:06PM -0600, Gunter Wambaugh wrote: > I couldn't find the answer to my problem in the archives, so here > goes. At worst you'll get stuck like I am :-) I installed rarpd (on Linux, since I could not get the OS X version to do anything beyond printing "got a packet") and edited /etc/ethers as follows: 08:00:20:c2:8d:f0 10.0.0.200 where the first part is the MAC address of the first ethernet interface on the Sun, and the second is an IP address I picked. Newer Suns can do DHCP, but I think the OpenBoot version on mine is too old. Then I copied boot/loader from the first FreeBSD install CD to /tftpboot, made a symlink named with a hex version of the IP address, and started tftpd (on a different machine from the rarpd server). If you're using OS X 10.4 as I was, you can start tftpd with "sudo launchctl start com.apple.tftpd". The relevant part of the (/private)/tftpboot directory looks like: lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 6B Dec 31 14:02 0A0000C8@ -> loader -r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 195K Dec 31 14:01 loader* Next I set up a NFS server. I first tried directly exporting the automounted CD image (/Volumes/FreeBSD_Install), but when I tried to mount that, the mount point was empty; not quite sure what was going on there. So instead, I copied the contents to a local disk: % nidump exports / /Users/Shared/FreeBSD_Install -ro -mapall=nobody (that'd be /etc/exports or /etc/dfs/dfstab on a more normal Unix system) and I was able to mount it successfully. Finally, I set up a DHCP server (ISC dhcpd 3) to serve the NFS root information. The network already has a DHCP server device which I couldn't add arbitrary information to - actually, I plan for this Sun to be the new DHCP server if I ever get it installed! dhcpd.conf is: ddns-update-style none; default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; log-facility local7; subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { } host install { hardware ethernet 08:00:20:c2:8d:f0; fixed-address 10.0.0.200; always-reply-rfc1048 on; option root-path "10.0.0.3:/Users/Shared/FreeBSD_Install"; } At that point all that remained was typing 'boot net' on the Sun. Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/network@1,1 File and args: /platform/sun4u/kernel/unix 34e00 Consoles: Open Firmware console FreeBSD/sparc64 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.0 (root@s-dallas.cse.buffalo.edu, Wed Nov 2 09:45:36 UTC 2005) bootpath="/pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/network@1,1" boot: ethernet address: 08:00:20:c2:8d:f0 net_open: server addr: 10.0.0.3 net_open: server path: /Users/Shared/FreeBSD_Install There'll be a short delay, then "Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf", then a longer delay before the FreeBSD kernel starts booting. >From looking at boot/loader.conf on the CD, it looks like I'm supposed to get a MFS root, but instead I get a (read-only) NFS root. During boot I do see this line: md0: Preloaded image 4194304 bytes at 0xc056435 and I was able to mount /dev/md0 after startup, but I can't figure out how to get it to be used as a root device. -- Nicholas Riley | From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 3 15:24:04 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0E25F16A41F for ; Tue, 3 Jan 2006 15:24:04 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from njriley@shrug.csl.uiuc.edu) Received: from shrug.csl.uiuc.edu (shrug.csl.uiuc.edu [130.126.137.135]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B93843D45 for ; Tue, 3 Jan 2006 15:24:03 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from njriley@shrug.csl.uiuc.edu) Received: from shrug.csl.uiuc.edu (njriley@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by shrug.csl.uiuc.edu (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k03FO21b041983; Tue, 3 Jan 2006 09:24:02 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from njriley@shrug.csl.uiuc.edu) Received: (from njriley@localhost) by shrug.csl.uiuc.edu (8.13.4/8.12.11/Submit) id k03FO2tk041982; Tue, 3 Jan 2006 09:24:02 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from njriley) Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2006 09:24:02 -0600 From: Nicholas Riley To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20060103152402.GB40204@uiuc.edu> References: <20060103013246.GB34161@uiuc.edu> <20060103142149.3311c15b@blackdog.umbrella.net> <20060103143746.GA40204@uiuc.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20060103143746.GA40204@uiuc.edu> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Subject: Re: NFS install writability on Netra t1 105 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 03 Jan 2006 15:24:04 -0000 On Tue, Jan 03, 2006 at 08:37:46AM -0600, Nicholas Riley wrote: > From looking at boot/loader.conf on the CD, it looks like I'm supposed > to get a MFS root, but instead I get a (read-only) NFS root. I tried copying over the corresponding portions of the mfsroot to the CD-ROM, changing the NFS mount to read-write, and configuring the network manually, but sysinstall then tries to install on /, as if I were running it on an installed system. How do I get it to realize that I'm doing an initial install, and to mount the target media somewhere else? I've seen several reports of people actually using the FreeBSD installer on sparc64 (albeit in 5.x versions); is it supposed to work still? Nothing exotic, I'm just attempting to use the installer over NFS because there's no local CD-ROM. > I've never tried installing on a nfs disk, I just untarred the > assorted bits from the cdrom on the nfs server. FreeBSD should prompt you for the root device right before it starts init, so you can type 'md0' at the prompt (the default would be hme0). --pgp-sign-Multipart_Tue_Jan__3_12:33:29_2006-1 This is my write-up about net-booting, which I believe someone referred to the thread in the archives two days ago since that's where I found it: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-sparc64/2005-October/003522.html c> Please do not ignore my problem. Please try to be a good scientist by doing lots of reading, taking good notes including error messages, and including pieces of your lab notebook in your questions. What modules/drivers must one load to get a working sun type 5 (din) mouse/keyboard under the console and in xorg? The keyboard of course works fine under the console. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any documentation on the subject that isn't i386 centric. I've tried most things that seem not unlikely, I have prior experience with sparc32/xsun, but either it has been too long or things are a bit different now :P. I realize I'm being pretty ambiguous here, just wanted to know what kernel modules and xorg drivers handle them. -- James Tanis jtanis@pycoder.org http://pycoder.org From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 7 17:16:15 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A98716A41F for ; Sat, 7 Jan 2006 17:16:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bsd@bathnetworks.com) Received: from lmail.bathnetworks.co.uk (mail.bathnetworks.com [84.92.24.252]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7C06E43D45 for ; Sat, 7 Jan 2006 17:16:14 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bsd@bathnetworks.com) Received: (qmail 20701 invoked by uid 510); 7 Jan 2006 17:19:22 +0000 Received: from 84.92.24.252 by lmail.bathnetworks.co.uk (envelope-from , uid 508) with qmail-scanner-1.24-st-qms (clamdscan: 0.87/1146. spamassassin: 3.0.2. perlscan: 1.24-st-qms. For 6.0 P1 consiole the type 5 works out of the box ish. I say ish as the leds don't work and the only keymap appears to be US. I don't think the mouse works at all. With x-windows try this: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "Protocol" "standard" Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30" Option "XkbRules" "sun" Option "XkbModel" "type5" Option "XkbLayout" "gb" Option "XkbKeycodes" "sun(type5)" EndSection Change XkbLayout to your layout. BTW again it sort of works some keys are wrong and the leds don't work. I haven't bothered any further as I use ssh & vnc to connect and that works correctly. The mouse works though /dev/cuau3 as there is no sysmouse. These will be included in the kernel via the device entries for puc, uart, and the general console stuff you need (depends which console you're going for, though with the creator device and syscons I've gotten the same kind of performance I'm used to from FreeBSD - which is good.) :-) puc allows demultiplexing on the uart serial port, which is how the Sun pre-USB keyboard/mouse stuff worked. The keyboard is connected directly to the host, and then the mouse to the keyboard, usually all connected to puc1. To give you some idea, here's the dmesg output on an Ultra1 box. uart0: on puc0 uart1: on puc0 uart2: on puc1 uart2: keyboard (1200,n,8,1) uart3: on puc1 As you can see puc0 is the actual physical serial ports on the system (uart0 and uart1), and puc1 is the keyboard/mouse port, which uart2 is the keyboard and uart3 is the mouse. To activate moused for a Sun type5 setup, you'll almost certainly want the command `moused -t mousesystems -p /dev/cuau3`. This will allow you to have Xorg access the mouse via /dev/sysmouse, as well as providing mouse functionality on a syscons console. So yes, the mouse does in fact work on the console with FreeBSD 6.0 on sparc64. :-) The LED problem is a known issue, and I have a GNATS ticket open on it, you can check out the FreeBSD bug tracking system and see if you maybe have anything to add to the information I've already provided in that ticket to assist the kernel dev folks in identifying and addressing the lock key LED problem. However, as all the toggles still work just fine, I marked the ticket as non-critical. __________________________________________ Yahoo! DSL – Something to write home about. Is it possible to change the console keyboard layout to gb rather than us? I've actually got a type6 kb and remembering which keys do what is a real pain. I'll look, If there is anything I can do to help I certainly wouldn't mind. The particular box I'm talking about is an ultrasparc 60 that I just got my hands on, eventually it'll run headless in my closet.. but that won't be until I'm much more familiar with the platform. Unfortunately I sold my soul to my fiance and agreed to get rid of my spare ss5 and a barebones ss20 that I'd gotten years and years ago :P.
