Without any intention to put down your most appreciated will to help with the look of the site, the patch is just a "hack" that does not solve the *real* problem: that the current CSS-based layout is broken and requires a specific font size to work. I'm not fond of the current state of the front page and a few other deeper-level pages, but the fix of the real problems is going to be more difficult that just changing a color here and there, IMHO :( > If the user accidently uses the font-size the designer > expected, the background color no longer matches exactly, > but I think it's close enough. Exactly. This would make it more difficult to locate the form for > submitting new bug reports :( Because in my opinion, anybody submitting a bug report for the first time would benefit from reading the information on http://www.freebsd.org/support/bugreports.html before submitting one - and once you're on that page it really isn't hard to find the "submit a bug report" link. This is vaguely connected to pr www/97234 as well. I also don't think "Report a bug" looks good where it is on the front page. Explicitly listing it second of the six quick links on the front page has the potential to suggest that it's a link new users may need a lot - not something that we want to suggest! In no way is "Report a bug" as important as the link to the Handbook or the ports information, especially in the context of somebody considering trying FreeBSD for the first time. I fully appreciate that it's an important link to have readily available, although I would still question the sense of linking directly to the submit form rather than giving the option of searching (which may reveal a solution to the issue the end user is seeing without even needing to submit a new PR). How are we to choose between one of > these two link orders? :-/ I appreciate what you are saying, although I would question the need for a "Show all open PRs" link, which currently returns summaries for 5347 open PRs in 990k of HTML - I suspect the majority of people accessing it don't actually need to, to or would be much better served by the search function. Removing this unnecessary load may even go someway towards reducing the number of times I see "The PR database is busy at the moment" messages, although I appreciate it may not be related. Neither can I. The original link was a 404 and it was a challenge to navigate their online catalogue in a language I didn't understand... Babelfish suggests it now looks like they no longer sell the BSD daemon toys, instead they list several other suppliers for it at http://www.freibergnet.de/fgnet/haendler.html . However, they do still seem to offer several FreeBSD hosting solutions, so it may be best just to move them to the ISP page. > Apart from the "GND Distribution, Ltd." change, I agree that the rest of > these diffs look fine. ANNOUNCES LONE-TAR v4.2 ==================================================== --------------------------------------------- To VIEW this document in HTML on our website: http://www.cactus.com/index.php?p=press42 --------------------------------------------- To DOWNLOAD this new version of LONE-TAR: http://www.cactus.com/index.php?p=download --------------------------------------------- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ====================== LONE STAR SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES LONE-TAR(r) Version 4.2 MOUNT AIRY, MD (May 17, 2006) - Lone Star Software Corporation is pleased to announce LONE-TAR Version 4.2; A complete backup and disaster recovery solution for systems running SCO UNIX(r), Linux(r) and FreeBSD(r). This version of LONE-TAR includes new, easy to use features such as the BZIP2 compression, Increased Backup Speeds and Enhanced Data Encryption. These features allow for secure and efficient backups to be made with minimal setup and deployment times. NEW FEATURES in v4.2: ======================= o BZIP2 Compression - Feature allows compression ratios of 3 to 1 or even 4 to 1 to be achieved. o Super-Fast Backup option - The number of files on a system is growing exponentially. Therefore, it is no longer practical to show on the screen each and every file name. Additionally, for millions of files, this can consume excess CPU power and slow the backup down. This can increase your screen performance by 15% to 20% in many cases. The catalog file still retains the names of each and every file. o Automatic Expansion of Compressed TAR Archives - Includes support for tar.gz, tar.Z & *.taz archives. If you have an archive such as mypackage.taz; 'lone-tar xvfb my package.taz 20'; will automatically extract the files out of this archive. This is quite useful for dealing with these types of files. Additionally, it is quite useful when you are very tight on disk space and it would require more disk space than you have to uncompress and selectively extract a few select files. o Over 2Gb support for Non-Tape Archives on 32 bit platforms - Most 32 bit platforms traditionally support only files up to 2Gb. Therefore, if you are backing up data to a NFS partition (where the actual files exist on a SUN/HP/RS machine), LONE-TAR will now not stop at the 2Gb limit. Instead, it will keep archiving data until the backup is complete. The size of the archive in these cases can exceed 4Gb and will be the same as the total amount of data to be backed up. o Reports the number of files NOT restored - The new LONE-TAR will now report the number of files "not" restored. This is the most critical piece of information you need to know when doing a restore. Were are my files restored and if not, why not? You need to know how many files were affected. o Elapsed Time on Restore and Verify - Now not only are backup times reported, but verify and restore times are also reported. This is a useful piece of information. Some people want to know how long the bit-level verifies are taking and this is a good way of finding out. The times reported do not include the time waiting for user or juke box to switch volumes. It is only the time reading the media. o TAPE LABEL supports many new field types - New variables are now available that will allow for a customized TAPE LABEL. o SCO over 4Gb raw partition support - LONE-TAR now supports over 4Gb partitions under SCO. In general SCO has a limitation of 2Gb files. In the past, by using the block raw partition, you could exceed the 2Gb barrier up to 4Gb. LONE-TAR v4.2 exceeds this SCO barrier on both a backup and a restore. o Restore Optimization - New restore "Optimization" will create a directory, in ADVANCE of restoring data, of the correct size, and with the proper number of blocks. Otherwise, directories themselves are restored fragmented. o Plus many more script and program enhancements and improvements. Availability: ============= o Supported Operating Systems: - Linux - SCO OpenServer 5.0.5 and greater - SCO OpenServer 6.0 (crash recovery available soon) - FreeBSD 5.x - FreeBSD 6.x o LONE-TAR v4.2 is available via our international network of value added resellers and distributors. Quantity discounts, pricing incentives and competitive upgrades are available, as well as personal home editions and corporate site licenses. o Technical support is included for one full year, which includes 24 x 7 disaster recovery support at no additional cost. o Data Encryption feature is currently available for $119.00 This new feature is built into the LONE-TAR binary [/bin/lone-tar]. o Please contact our Sales office for additional pricing information at 800-525-8649 or by email at sales@cactus.com.
