reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. Although I use the mentioned sources quite often your first=20 source of information should always be FreeBSD's own documentation. AFAIK every entry in the kernel config file should have its own man page. In your case: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=3Dkbdmux&sektion=3D4&manpath=3DFre= eBSD+6.2-RELEASE J. However: 1. the GENERIC kernel config does not include this option; 2. nor does the SMP kernel config; 3. my system works with a kernel config based on GENERIC+SMP, without this options, so it seems to be optional. Indeed the information in kbdmux(4) is very helpful. I now have a basic idea of what kbdmux is about. But I do not know whether I can safely remove it from my config file. Which information source should I use for that? I assume GENERIC, NOTES or the Handbook? Neither of them answers this question. Lastly, useless comments are IMHO worse than no comments at all. You can remove SCSI peripherals if you do not have SCSI devices *but* (it's the role of the Note) some devices are not SCSI devices but will require you to keep the SCSI support. I think FAT* is newspeak :-). The file system is named msdosfs, not FAT. Anyway, the number of bits per FAT entry is of no interest in most cases, so it shouldn't be emphasized. newfs_msdos will choose the best number, or if you tell it, any number that can work. newfs_msdos(8) says "construct a new MS-DOS (FAT) file system ... creates a FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32 file system". It doesn't say anything about how newfs_msdos chooses the best FAT size or other important parameters. newfs_msdos still hasn't caught up with the renaming of file systems from foo to foofs. > [1] > http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-pre.html > [2] > http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-trouble.html A quick reading showed some bugs in [2]: - just after "FAT16 and FAT32", it says "The utility most common usage is # mount_msdosfs /dev/ad0s1 /mnt". It should say something like "This utility's most common usage is indirectly via a line in /etc/fstab or mount -t msdosfs. [Example line in fstab, and the above command line with direct use of mount_msdosfs fixed.] This [section of?] the handbook is too small to describe utilities in not most common usage like newfs_msdos." - a little later, it says It says "Extended MS-DOS file systems are usually mapped after FreeBSD partitions ... with the extended MS-DOS partition located on /dev/ad0s3", but there is no such thing as an extended MS-DOS file system. It should say something like "MS-DOS logical drives are usually mapped after primary partitions ... with the first logical drive being /dev/ad0s3" and possibly add some details ("partition" here means an MS-DOS primary partition; MS-DOS extended partitions aren't mapped; MS-DOS logical drives correspond to FreeBSD slices, except for primary partitions the partitions correspond to slices; check that in MS-DOS speak, primary partitions aren't described as logical drives; logical drives may or may not contain a file system, but in this example /dev/ad0s3 has an MS-DOS file system, and I didn't reword things enough to describe this). ---------------- end bde@ text ------------- The attached patch removes the explicit reference to FATxx (but mentions that some people call msdosfs ``FAT''), fixes the ``most common usage'', and clarifies the note about numbering of extended (msdos) partitions. >How-To-Repeat: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-trouble.html >Fix: Patch attached with submission follows: --- chapter.sgml.orig 2007-07-14 16:51:56.000000000 -0500 +++ chapter.sgml 2007-07-18 20:47:48.000000000 -0500 @@ -3967,24 +3967,37 @@ located in the Start> Programs > System Tools menu. - &os; can support &ms-dos; based file systems (FAT16 and FAT32). - This requires you use the &man.mount.msdosfs.8; command - with the required parameters. The STABLE line of development continues on from 6.2-RELEASE and works towards 6.3-RELEASE. So if 6.2-R does not support a device it can be that 6.2-S does, since it gets backports from 7-CURRENT and other sort of patches to its development tree. Users can install 6.2-R and then using cvsup or csup have the ability to track/follow the 6.2-S branch. FWIW, I (with portmaster author hat on) am sort of ambivalent about this issue. I've avoided adding anything to that chapter about portmaster because my personal feeling is that a laundry list of tools isn't useful to the user, especially if all the descriptions are the same size as the ones that are there now. What I think would be more useful (and again, I'm speaking only for myself) would be a list of tools available with a brief description of each, and links to outside sources (web pages, pkg-descr files, etc.) where an interested user can get more information. I do think that letting our users know that there are tools available is a good thing, I don't think mini-manuals for each tool is appropriate in that context. If anyone else thinks that this is a good idea, I'd be happy to contribute a paragraph on portmaster, and help with rewriting that section if desired. Doug PS, I set reply-to the -doc list since this is more of a meta-discussion about the idea rather than a discussion about the commit. -- This .signature sanitized for your protection From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 19 13:10:40 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B9F6A16A410; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 13:10:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from keramida@freebsd.org) Received: from igloo.linux.gr (igloo.linux.gr [62.1.205.36]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1E85113C47E; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 13:10:39 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from keramida@freebsd.org) Received: from kobe.laptop (vader.bytemobile.ondsl.gr [83.235.244.135]) (authenticated bits=128) by igloo.linux.gr (8.13.8/8.13.8/Debian-3) with ESMTP id l6JCt9q1000938 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NOT); Thu, 19 Jul 2007 15:56:46 +0300 Received: from kobe.laptop (kobe.laptop [127.0.0.1]) by kobe.laptop (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id l6JCsBKK009894; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 15:54:40 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from keramida@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from keramida@localhost) by kobe.laptop (8.14.1/8.14.1/Submit) id l6JCsBvQ009893; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 15:54:11 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from keramida@FreeBSD.org) Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2007 15:54:10 +0300 From: Giorgos Keramidas To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20070719125410.GA9766@kobe.laptop> References: <200707190121.l6J1LOvd007607@repoman.freebsd.org> <20070719054803.GA1002@gothic.blackend.org> <469F1D0F.2090307@FreeBSD.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <469F1D0F.2090307@FreeBSD.org> X-Hellug-MailScanner: Found to be clean X-Hellug-MailScanner-SpamCheck: not spam, SpamAssassin (not cached, score=-3.925, required 5, autolearn=not spam, ALL_TRUSTED -1.80, AWL 0.47, BAYES_00 -2.60) X-Hellug-MailScanner-From: keramida@freebsd.org X-Spam-Status: No Cc: doc-committers@freebsd.org, Chin-San Huang , cvs-all@freebsd.org, cvs-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cvs commit: doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports/chapter.sgml X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2007 13:10:40 -0000 On 2007-07-19 01:13, Doug Barton wrote: >>> en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports chapter.sgml >>> Log: >>> - Introduce another way for upgrading packages and ports using bpkg(8). >> >> I'm not sure the Handbook has the vocation to talk about all >> available tools to manage ports and packages. It would also be nice to have articles like: "Managing thirdparty ports & packages with portupgrade" "Managing thirdparty ports & packages with portmaster" "Managing thirdparty ports & packages with XXX" in the doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/... collection, so the Handbook can talk about the general, common ideas behind port management, and the articles can turn into mini-manuals. It may even be possible to talk about one or two (the 'official' port management tools), and then move the rest into separate articles. If the tools mentioned in the articles get 'official' status or one of the currently official tools gets dropped, or gets stale, we can move chunks of the Handbook from articles to the book, or from the book to standalone articles. Does this sound like something which makes more sense than blowing up the size of the Handbook with full manuals about all the available tools we have now? - Giorgos From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 19 14:50:08 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 10A1116A402 for ; I think I finally got it. In the process I had to solve some problems which to the best of my knowledge are not documented in any FBSD manual. I think my experience might be useful to others. Therefore I'd like to offer a short document on problems with disks previously used by other OS on alpha. This will go nicely under section 4.2 Common Installation Problems for Alpha/AXP Architecture Users (which is completely empty at the present) of FreeBSD/alpha 6.2-RELEASE Installation Instructions http://www.freebsd.org/releases/6.2R/installation-alpha.html I think this is a relatively 'common' problem. I've seen some discussion threads on various forums on this. However, there is nothing in the 'official' FBSD documentation. Moreover, the info is very fragmented and therefore took me ages to figure out. Let me know if anybody is interested in this. At present this is a plain text document. best regards anton -- Anton Shterenlikht Room 2.6, Queen's Building Mech Eng Dept Bristol University University Walk, Bristol BS8 1TR, UK Tel: +44 (0)117 928 8233 Fax: +44 (0)117 929 4423 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 19 17:30:40 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C134716A406 for ; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 17:30:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from support@keyway.net) Received: from mail.keyway.net (mail.keyway.net [216.117.199.18]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9C47613C4B5 for ; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 17:30:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from support@keyway.net) Received: from stab (71-83-132-247.dhcp.rvsd.ca.charter.com [71.83.132.247]) (authenticated bits=0) by mail.keyway.net (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l6JHUQop060671; Thu, 19 Jul 2007 10:30:27 -0700 (PDT) Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2007 10:32:17 -0700 (PDT) From: "Keyway Support Dept." For the moment we have one "official" management tool: portupgrade, hence this one must be documented in the ports chapter. I also feel portmaster may be added in future. For the other third-party tools, they can be the subject of a specific article but adding a mini-howto section in the Handbook for each other tool is not a good thing. I just looked at http://www.bsdstats.org/freebsd/ports.php?category=ports-mgmt just to get an idea of what some (4,982) people use: bpkg 1 portmanager 210 portmaster 265 portupgrade 1836 portupgrade-devel 552 well portupgrade, beside being mentioned everywhere in UPDATING, is really used by our community. -- Marc From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 20 11:54:53 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8DE6116A46C for ; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 11:54:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chinsan.tw@gmail.com) Received: from an-out-0708.google.com (an-out-0708.google.com [209.85.132.243]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 29CA413C467 for ; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 11:54:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chinsan.tw@gmail.com) Received: by an-out-0708.google.com with SMTP id c14so209861anc for ; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 04:54:51 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=O257nVSlUn8MNmuLvGRS/vVXgXVGRYzphEdAYMxswJE9mbDzQHdp+XIH/WOHSXMWre9LPbljKymrSiF6GnulOY4mYYD6mDXcpJ6LbIbLkXE+KPW+0yblB5OC8Aqr4Vfwhbr1VuCTFzejZzFllJzBheDzGA4Z0Ve7FCmtsY4pHCo= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=YfitmZFRlk7hGLrUjdJ99derxihmEAT4Ac0+noq3tXDwy37+RVV4OSYjpJrkUF7CztPFJtnh74QPWVFecSbxcxUb+FZWNH5hDeBVkt1NU/PaWHP31/7Lbagc4hx+ShcacLdSl+2ce8WUpd+dvZPa9cgiUf9S4ZaAwj2UNEPVfvo= Received: by 10.100.47.9 with SMTP id u9mr186567anu.1184932491747; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 04:54:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.100.119.4 with HTTP; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 04:54:51 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <1f27304c0707200454h4b842da7jb2de8327968faee5@mail.gmail.com> Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2007 19:54:51 +0800 From: chinsan To: "Giorgos Keramidas" In-Reply-To: <20070719125410.GA9766@kobe.laptop> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: <200707190121.l6J1LOvd007607@repoman.freebsd.org> <20070719054803.GA1002@gothic.blackend.org> <469F1D0F.2090307@FreeBSD.org> <20070719125410.GA9766@kobe.laptop> Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, doc-committers@freebsd.org, cvs-all@freebsd.org, cvs-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cvs commit: doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports/chapter.sgml X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2007 11:54:53 -0000 On 7/19/07, Giorgos Keramidas wrote: > On 2007-07-19 01:13, Doug Barton wrote: > >>> en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports chapter.sgml > >>> Log: > >>> - Introduce another way for upgrading packages and ports using bpkg(8). > >> > >> I'm not sure the Handbook has the vocation to talk about all > >> available tools to manage ports and packages. I'll revert it back and rewitre a mini article. It's really ok. Don't _revert_ anything. I didn't write about articles because I wanted you to 'revert' anything; it was just a bit of 'thinking aloud' sort of thing. You can leave what is now in CVS there, and write up an article for it. Then when the article has been committed in the tree, the current text can be tweaked to point to the new article :) From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 20 15:50:09 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 95F5F16A478 for ; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:50:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 679AA13C457 for ; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:50:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id l6KFo98B004362 for ; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:50:09 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1/Submit) id l6KFo9Nu004359; Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:50:09 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:50:09 GMT Message-Id: <200707201550.l6KFo9Nu004359@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org From: Yuri Pankov Cc: Subject: Re: docs/114711: [patch] Replace NCURSES_* variables in terminfo.5 with actual values X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Yuri Pankov List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:50:09 -0000 The following reply was made to PR docs/114711; it has been noted by GNATS.
