Some of the problems are obviated, other remain. It may be of help to mention the solutions, so i post them here. Note the laptop is *very* well supported under Ubuntu edgy, so it is not at all Linux unfriendly. Out of the box FreeBSD doesn't recognize - the wifi card. I have found an experimental driver which happens to work, it is called 20070121-wpi-freebsd.tar.gz. A more recent version does *not* work (20070125). Strangely the connection to the access point is more stable with this driver than under Linux or Windows, but the speed is somewhat lower. - the wired card. I have found a binary driver on Marvell's site. It is called mykbsd60x86-8.12.2.3.tar and works. - the agp support does not detect the video card, as a consequence i don't have Xvideo support, nor hardware opengl. Mplayer suffers from that. Apparently the PCI ID of the card doesn't appear in agp code, but appears in drm code (0x27a28086 ). - i have found a binary driver for the snd_hda sound card, called sndkld_releng6_i386_lowlatency.tar.gz which works very well to play sound files, but cannot play music cdroms. And, cherry on the cake, acpi support is such that suspend to ram kills the machine and even worse halt -p doesn't halt the machine, and leaves it spending all the battery. On the other hand machine works nicely, no overheating, Intel speedstep with cpufreq.ko seems to work. Also acpi_sony allows to effectively control screen's brightness. video: Intel 945GM wireless: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 wired: Marvell 88E8036 Fast Ethernet Controller audio: HDA Codec: Realtek (Unknown) -- Michel TALON From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 29 09:53:37 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DACC016A591 for ; Mon, 29 Jan 2007 09:53:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from a.bittau@cs.ucl.ac.uk) Received: from darkircop.org (tapir.cs.ucl.ac.uk [128.16.66.93]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 967F013C471 for ; Mon, 29 Jan 2007 09:53:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from a.bittau@cs.ucl.ac.uk) Received: by darkircop.org (Postfix, from userid 0) id 444DC6D752; Mon, 29 Jan 2007 09:53:18 +0000 (GMT) Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 09:53:18 +0000 From: Andrea Bittau To: "M. It'll have something like this: Section "Device" Identifier "Radeon7500" Driver "radeon" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" Option "DynamicClocks" "on" EndSection Unfortunately, DRI is broken with suspend in freebsd (at least last I checked) so there's no real advantage to adding all of the usual fast agp stuff that I know of. It seems like intels may have had a port like net/iwi-firmware required for its operation. The modem I think: > I am really lost here! > pci0: at device 31.6 (no driver attached) I am really unsure on the modem. I assumed they were lucentmodems (there's a port, comms/ltmdm that might work) but am not sure. I haven't had a need. I need to configure this to for the fan I think > acpi_tz0: on acpi0 The fan (on mine) works automatically. The thermal zone lets you see the temperature via `sysctl hw.acpi`. It introduce a workaround for one hardware bug, and it support now more AMD processors. So yes, this should fix hangs if powerd is activated. Note that people reported another problems but with acpi_throttle, which happens to be a complete different problem. my best guess for now is that the lapic timer is stopped when the processor is throttled, and desactivating apic will help to see if that guess is correct. -- Bruno Ducrot -- Which is worse: ignorance or apathy? -- Don't know. There are two problems infact: 1. ndisgen remains in a tight loop, telling me that my .INF file format is invalid. Upon investigation, I see that there is a default condition for this in the ndisgen program, so I am not sure how to break out of it. It might be a bug, I need to investigate it more before I file a PR for it. 2. I bypassed ndisgen as a result, and used ndiscvt directly instead, but I get a segfault. ------------------- [root@dexter /tmp/pcmcia]# ndiscvt -i ./oxser.inf -s ./oxser.sys /* * Generated from ./oxser.inf and ./oxser.sys (49792 bytes) */ Segmentation fault: 11 (core dumped) ------------------- Has anyone used ndis successfully? I would appreciate any tips for this. That is my primary concern now, because I have to get the card up _asap_. Thanks in advance. Your problem may be related to the fact that the .INF file is either not ASCII coded (but maybe UTF-8) (you can verify this with file(1)) or contains garbage somewhere, like a spurious character or a newline or whatnot that the Windows parser does not trip upon but the ndis one does. You may need to try around a bit. Also, you may want to search the website of the card manufacturer to see if they have a more recent version of the driver or try drivers for various Windows versions. Hope these tips help somewhat :-) -- Regards: Szilveszter ADAM Budapest Hungary From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 1 22:09:44 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C3E1216A408 for ; Thu, 1 Feb 2007 22:09:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from osl1smout1.broadpark.no (osl1smout1.broadpark.no [80.202.4.58]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6BF6413C4B6 for ; Thu, 1 Feb 2007 22:09:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from osl1sminn1.broadpark.no ([80.202.4.59]) by osl1smout1.broadpark.no (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.05 (built Oct 21 2004)) with ESMTP id <0JCT00DWT1K7QP40@osl1smout1.broadpark.no> for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Thu, 01 Feb 2007 23:09:43 +0100 (CET) Received: from kg-work.kg4.no ([80.203.66.169]) by osl1sminn1.broadpark.no (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.05 (built Oct 21 2004)) with SMTP id <0JCT00GOA1K6YPU6@osl1sminn1.broadpark.no> for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Thu, 01 Feb 2007 23:09:43 +0100 (CET) Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2007 23:09:38 +0100 From: Torfinn Ingolfsen X-Face: "t9w2,-X@O^I`jVW\sonI3.,36KBLZE*AL[y9lL[PyFD*r_S:dIL9c[8Y>V42R0"!"yb_zN,f#%.[PYYNq; m"_0v; ~rUM2Yy!zmkh)3&U|u!=T(zyv,MHJv"nDH>OJ`t(@mil461d_B'Uo|'nMwlKe0Mv=kvV?Nh@>Hb<3s_z2jYgZhPb@?Wi^x1a~Hplz1.zH To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-id: <20070201230938.8b546beb.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Sylpheed 2.3.1 (GTK+ 2.10.8; i386-portbld-freebsd6.2) Content-type: multipart/mixed; boundary="Boundary_(ID_DNywO1yVywqaHSrAS34SsQ)" Subject: Toshiba OmniBook 5500CT, FreeBSD 4.11 and two PCCards X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2007 22:09:44 -0000 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --Boundary_(ID_DNywO1yVywqaHSrAS34SsQ) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT I have an old Toshiba laptop (OmniBook 5500CT), which is too old to run FreeBSD 6.x or even 5.x on. The reason for that is that the PCCard controller isn't supported / doesn't work under 5.x or 6.x. So I installed FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE on it, and upgraded to 4.11-stable. I would like to use the OmniBook as a temporary firewall, while I upgrade the real firewall. For this to work, the OmniBook needs to have two network cards. Being old, this machine don't have built in network card(s), usb port(s) or anything that could be of help here. But it has two PCCard slots. I had been searching the web for ACPI issues, and they were posted to this list, so I thought it was the best (judging from the name as well ;), but I didn't know there was a dedicated one for ACPI. It has this controller: sdh0@pci21:0:2: class=0x080500 card=0x201d17aa chip=0x08221180 rev=0x18 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Ricoh Company, Ltd.' device = 'SD Bus Host Adapter' class = base peripheral I'm running 7-current. The driver can do 1MB in ~30 seconds (with DMA, transferring single 512 blocks). It's not great, but at least it's a starting point. It should work fine, although doing stuff like pulling the card out half way through a transfer will most likely mess things up. I also have a patch that will allow mmc and mmcsd to be compiled as modules, and to be detached. To use my driver, you need to apply that patch [mmc.diff]. I attach it to this e-mail to ease review. --- Index: conf/files =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/conf/files,v retrieving revision 1.1171 diff -u -p -r1.1171 files --- conf/files 5 Jan 2007 01:46:26 -0000 1.1171 +++ conf/files 3 Feb 2007 01:49:30 -0000 @@ -754,8 +754,8 @@ dev/mlx/mlx_disk.c optional mlx dev/mlx/mlx_pci.c optional mlx pci dev/mly/mly.c optional mly dev/mmc/mmc.c optional mmc -dev/mmc/mmcbr_if.m optional mmc -dev/mmc/mmcbus_if.m optional mmc +dev/mmc/mmcbr_if.m standard +dev/mmc/mmcbus_if.m standard dev/mmc/mmcsd.c optional mmcsd dev/mpt/mpt.c optional mpt dev/mpt/mpt_cam.c optional mpt Index: conf/kmod.mk =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/conf/kmod.mk,v retrieving revision 1.213 diff -u -p -r1.213 kmod.mk --- conf/kmod.mk 20 Oct 2006 07:31:15 -0000 1.213 +++ conf/kmod.mk 3 Feb 2007 01:49:30 -0000 @@ -318,7 +318,7 @@ ${_src}: MFILES?= dev/acpica/acpi_if.m dev/ata/ata_if.m dev/eisa/eisa_if.m \ dev/iicbus/iicbb_if.m dev/iicbus/iicbus_if.m \ - dev/mmc/mmcbr_if.m mmc/mmcbus_if.m \ + dev/mmc/mmcbr_if.m dev/mmc/mmcbus_if.m \ dev/mii/miibus_if.m dev/ofw/ofw_bus_if.m \ dev/pccard/card_if.m dev/pccard/power_if.m dev/pci/pci_if.m \ dev/pci/pcib_if.m dev/ppbus/ppbus_if.m dev/smbus/smbus_if.m \ Index: dev/mmc/mmc.c =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/dev/mmc/mmc.c,v retrieving revision 1.1 diff -u -p -r1.1 mmc.c --- dev/mmc/mmc.c 20 Oct 2006 06:39:59 -0000 1.1 +++ dev/mmc/mmc.c 3 Feb 2007 01:49:37 -0000 @@ -117,7 +117,26 @@ mmc_attach(device_t dev) static int mmc_detach(device_t dev) { - return (EBUSY); /* XXX */ + struct mmc_softc *sc = device_get_softc(dev); + device_t *kids; + int i, nkid; + + /* kill children [ph33r]. -sorbo */ + if (device_get_children(sc->dev, &kids, &nkid) != 0) + return 0; + for (i = 0; i < nkid; i++) { + device_t kid = kids[i]; + void *ivar = device_get_ivars(kid); + + device_detach(kid); + device_delete_child(sc->dev, kid); + free(ivar, M_DEVBUF); + } + free(kids, M_TEMP); + + MMC_LOCK_DESTROY(sc); + + return 0; } static int @@ -553,6 +572,8 @@ mmc_discover_cards(struct mmc_softc *sc) while (1) { ivar = malloc(sizeof(struct mmc_ivars), M_DEVBUF, M_WAITOK); + if (!ivar) + return; err = mmc_all_send_cid(sc, ivar->raw_cid); if (err == MMC_ERR_TIMEOUT) break; @@ -571,10 +592,11 @@ mmc_discover_cards(struct mmc_softc *sc) printf("SD CARD: %lld bytes\n", ivar->csd.capacity); child = device_add_child(sc->dev, NULL, -1); device_set_ivars(child, ivar); - break; + return; } panic("Write MMC card code here"); } + free(ivar, M_DEVBUF); } static void @@ -743,3 +765,4 @@ static devclass_t mmc_devclass; DRIVER_MODULE(mmc, at91_mci, mmc_driver, mmc_devclass, 0, 0); +DRIVER_MODULE(mmc, sdh, mmc_driver, mmc_devclass, 0, 0); Index: dev/mmc/mmcsd.c =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/dev/mmc/mmcsd.c,v retrieving revision 1.1 diff -u -p -r1.1 mmcsd.c --- dev/mmc/mmcsd.c 20 Oct 2006 06:39:59 -0000 1.1 +++ dev/mmc/mmcsd.c 3 Feb 2007 01:49:37 -0000 @@ -50,6 +50,7 @@ struct mmcsd_softc { struct disk *disk; struct proc *p; struct bio_queue_head bio_queue; + int running; }; #define MULTI_BLOCK_READ_BROKEN @@ -104,6 +105,8 @@ mmcsd_attach(device_t dev) sc->disk->d_unit = device_get_unit(dev); disk_create(sc->disk, DISK_VERSION); bioq_init(&sc->bio_queue); + + sc->running = 1; kthread_create(&mmcsd_task, sc, &sc->p, 0, 0, "task: mmc/sd card"); return (0); @@ -112,7 +115,27 @@ mmcsd_attach(device_t dev) static int mmcsd_detach(device_t dev) { - return (EBUSY); /* XXX */ + struct mmcsd_softc *sc = device_get_softc(dev); + + /* kill thread */ + MMCSD_LOCK(sc); + sc->running = 0; + wakeup(sc); + MMCSD_UNLOCK(sc); + + /* wait for thread to finish. As a consequence the main remaining problem on this laptop is solved. Note this brings XVideo support, but harware OpenGL still does not work for an unknown reason. Xorg.0.log reports (II) I810(0): [drm] installed DRM signal handler (II) I810(0): [DRI] installation complete (II) I810(0): direct rendering: Enabled but glxinfo reports: name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: No and glxgears produces crap results. For the convenience of people who could be tempted to buy the same laptop (i find it very nice, and not overpriced), here is dmesg, with, i hope, all hardware detected - note there is a pccard controller, but no pccard slot, only flash card slots, controlled by pccard. Also the touchpad is recognised as an Alps touchpad under Linux with all sorts of functions, here it acts as a standard mouse, tapping has no effect: rose% dmesg Copyright (c) 1992-2007 The FreeBSD Project.
