Unfortunately, my Alpha has some hardware issue and will no longer boot. It started while trying to run Firefox (I suspect X doesn't respect the DMA bug in the pass 1 Pyxis). This crashed the machine a couple times, and I kept retrying it, and now it won't do anything. Without X, it was rock-solid, and Firefox worked fine over X forwarding. Other X programs that didn't use large pixmaps worked fine too. Once I get the machine back up, I'll send in a patch. Incidentally, if anyone has any experience debugging Alphas, I'd appreciate help. It's an AlphaPC 164SX and is stopping at POST code 0x14, which the manual informs me indicates "Memory errors cleared; start reading system ROM". -Nathan From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 1 17:54:20 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 340D016A420 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 17:54:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@sopwith.solgatos.com) Received: from schitzo.solgatos.com (pool-96-225-216-68.ptldor.fios.verizon.net [96.225.216.68]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0049D13C45A for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 17:54:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@sopwith.solgatos.com) Received: from schitzo.solgatos.com (localhost.home.localnet [127.0.0.1]) by schitzo.solgatos.com (8.14.1/8.13.8) with ESMTP id m11HV25j011405; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 09:31:02 -0800 Received: from sopwith.solgatos.com (uucp@localhost) by schitzo.solgatos.com (8.14.1/8.13.4/Submit) with UUCP id m11HV2q9011402; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 09:31:02 -0800 Received: from localhost by sopwith.solgatos.com (8.8.8/6.24) id RAA21312; Fri, 1 Feb 2008 17:23:57 GMT Message-Id: <200802011723.RAA21312@sopwith.solgatos.com> To: Nathan Whitehorn In-reply-to: Your message of "Fri, 01 Feb 2008 09:08:22 CST." <47A335E6.9090209@uchicago.edu> Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2008 09:23:57 +0000 From: Dieter Cc: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: No X server on Alpha? Have you made any hardware changes recently? added/removed card, ... You might need to reinstall the SRM firmware, if it will get far enough to do that.
