From: Peter Jeremy To: IKEGAMI Akiko Cc: bug-followup@freebsd.org Subject: Re: amd64/119591: [amd64] [patch] time_t on 64-bit architecture Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2008 07:50:31 +1100 --VuQYccsttdhdIfIP Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Whilst I agree that the existing LEAPYEAR macro can only handle dates between 1901 and 2099, this macro is only used to convert timestamps to/from the RTC - and currently that code will only support dates between 1970 and 2069. There is provision to separately store the century in the RTC but this code is not currently active. Note that the code to write the time back to the RTC currently steps year-by-year and is therefore also needs a rethink before the range is massively increased. --=20 Peter Jeremy --VuQYccsttdhdIfIP Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHiSgX/opHv/APuIcRAvlSAJ0ToZ3alNx0ZQToWtqr1w3NszmvuwCferLU g8VCxtobSdYLszr3QO7KM9Y= =pnIr -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --VuQYccsttdhdIfIP-- From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 13 08:31:46 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4CD9816A418; Sun, 13 Jan 2008 08:31:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost2.sentex.ca (smarthost2.sentex.ca [205.211.164.50]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F92B13C457; Sun, 13 Jan 2008 08:31:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp2.sentex.ca (smtp2.sentex.ca [199.212.134.9]) by smarthost2.sentex.ca (8.14.1/8.13.8) with ESMTP id m0D8Vjth001497; Sun, 13 Jan 2008 03:31:45 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp2.sentex.ca (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id m0D8VjvJ016759; Sun, 13 Jan 2008 03:31:45 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 35EB67303E; Sun, 13 Jan 2008 03:31:45 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20080113083145.35EB67303E@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2008 03:31:45 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.91.1, clamav-milter version 0.91.1 on clamscanner3 X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on amd64/amd64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2008 08:31:46 -0000 TB --- 2008-01-13 08:30:00 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2008-01-13 08:30:00 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for amd64/amd64 TB --- 2008-01-13 08:30:00 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2008-01-13 08:30:53 - cvsupping the source tree TB --- 2008-01-13 08:30:53 - /usr/bin/csup -r 3 -g -L 1 -h localhost -s /tinderbox/HEAD/amd64/amd64/supfile TB --- 2008-01-13 08:31:03 - building world (CFLAGS=-O -pipe) TB --- 2008-01-13 08:31:03 - cd /src TB --- 2008-01-13 08:31:03 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Sun Jan 13 08:31:05 UTC 2008 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree [...] ===> gnu/usr.bin/cvs/cvs (cleandir) rm -f cvs add.o admin.o annotate.o buffer.o checkin.o checkout.o classify.o client.o commit.o create_adm.o cvsrc.o diff.o edit.o entries.o error.o expand_path.o fileattr.o filesubr.o find_names.o hardlink.o hash.o history.o ignore.o import.o lock.o log.o login.o logmsg.o main.o mkmodules.o modules.o myndbm.o no_diff.o parseinfo.o patch.o prepend_args.o rcs.o rcscmds.o recurse.o release.o remove.o repos.o root.o run.o scramble.o server.o stack.o status.o subr.o tag.o update.o vers_ts.o version.o watch.o wrapper.o zlib.o cvs.1.gz cvs.5.gz cvs.1.cat.gz cvs.5.cat.gz rm -rf cvs-sanity rm -f .depend GPATH GRTAGS GSYMS GTAGS ===> gnu/usr.bin/cvs/contrib (cleandir) sed -e 's,@CSH@,/bin/csh,' -e 's,@PERL@,/usr/bin/perl,' /src/gnu/usr.bin/cvs/contrib/../../../../contrib/cvs/contrib/Makefile.in > Makefile "Makefile", line 15: Need an operator make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue *** Error code 1 Stop in /src/gnu/usr.bin/cvs. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src/gnu/usr.bin. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src/gnu. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. Anyway, this code should be replaced by merging from the i386 version (after fixing style bugs in that). The i386 version used to be identical with the amd64 versioni, but the i386 version now uses somewhat over-engineered generic code (kern/subr_clock.c) that has different problems in this area: It rejects years > 2037 and is broken for years before 1970 or 1906 (at least with 32-bit time_t's), but its leapyear() function pretends to support the much larger range of 32-bit ints which it cannot possibly support in full. There has to be a range check for the limited range that can be supported, and it may as well be for 1901-2099 or 1906-2037 or 1970-2037 or even 2000-2037 so that everything can be simpler. > There is provision to > separately store the century in the RTC but this code is not > currently active. Better remove it in case it is used :-). It was negatively useful even at the Y2K boundary since the heuristic for determining the century works better except across > 100-year intervals which no one cares about. i386 has lost the heuristic so it can't even go back to 1999. > Note that the code to write the time back to the RTC currently > steps year-by-year and is therefore also needs a rethink before > the range is massively increased. inittodr() also loops on the year. So does clock_ct_to_ts(). This is a good method for a small range of years. So Service checks were not performed anymore. For some reason the parten forked service processes with a WCPU of 100% taking all the cpu. The only workaround was to kill -9 the corresponding pid. This is not of much help since Nagios doesn't repeat killed service checks anymore (or I don't now how). So I had to combine a cron script killing these processes (to give you an idea: were are performing about 1000 service checks per 15 minutes. Roughly 10 of which were malfunctioning) and I had to reload the nagios-daemon in order to reschedule killed service checks. >How-To-Repeat: I tried Nagios 2.10 on FreeBSD6.3 PRERELEASE amd64 >Fix: I downgraded to 6.2-RELEASE-p10 FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE-p10 #0: Thu Jan 17 20:21:26 GMT 2008 Now everything is working fine again. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 18 04:16:08 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9F2A016A417; The reason for this is you need the i386 includes to build your program, but they are not installed during a installworld (see stage 5.1 in src/Makefile.inc1). It's not clear in your report, are you recompiling the program under i386, or copying the binary from FreeBSD/amd64 to the FreeBSD/i386 system? If you build your program under FreeBSD/i386, does your program run without these problems on i386 and amd64? The reason for this is you need the i386 includes to build >your program, but they are not installed during a installworld (see >stage 5.1 in src/Makefile.inc1). I assume, that all needed includes are the same under amd64 and i386... Problems are not connected with sizeof(int) or prototyping. Unfortunately, I can't port my program (that is cernlib) to 64-bit (I try !), because one intensively uses int (and integer*4 :) to store pointers, so I need to compile it in 32-bit environment - if possible, on FreeBSD/amd64, if not - I should choose to continue using the FreeBSD/i386 on 64-bit CPU :( Note, that Sun's OpenLook (ports/x11-toolkits/xview{,-clients}) compiled, but not work under amd64 for the same reasons - pointer should fit into int. However 32-bit binaries are OK. At least, I encounter too less problematic places (really two - syscalls getrlimit() and lseek(), see below) during 32-bit compiling in comparison with porting to 64-bit... >It's not clear in your report, are you recompiling the program under >i386, or copying the binary from FreeBSD/amd64 to the FreeBSD/i386 >system? Failed binary produced under FreeBSD/amd64 as static w/ -m32 and executed on FreeBSD/amd64 and (after copying :) on FreeBSD/i386 - with the same faulty results. >If you build your program under FreeBSD/i386, does your program run >without these problems on i386 and amd64? Yes, binary produced under FreeBSD/i386 as static have not a problem during execution under both FreeBSD/i386 and FreeBSD/amd64. So I conclude, that problem possibly in FreeBSD/amd64's 32-bit compatibility support, at least in syscall getrlimit(). Furthermore, I have now yet another example of faulty syscall - lseek(). Example text (see below) compiled natively under i386 and amd64 works as expected (outputs the same): i386> ./tseek.32 or amd64> ./tseek.64 fildes=3, nbdo=0 isw=0, errno=0 1 stat=0 1 write(): res=4096, errno=0 fildes=3, nbdo=8192 isw=8192, errno=0 2 stat=0 2 write(): res=4096, errno=0 fildes=3, nbdo=4096 isw=4096, errno=0 3 stat=0 3 write(): res=4096, errno=0 However compiled under amd64 as cc -c -g -W -Wall -m32 -o tseek.o tseek.c cc -c -g -W -Wall -m32 -o cfseek.o cfseek.c cc -g -W -Wall -m32 -static -B/usr/lib32 -o tseek tseek.o cfseek.o says: amd64> ./tseek.32on64 fildes=3, nbdo=0 isw=0, errno=0 1 stat=0 1 write(): res=4096, errno=0 fildes=3, nbdo=8192 isw=-1, errno=22 error in CFSEEK: Invalid argument 2 stat=-1 2 write(): res=4096, errno=0 fildes=3, nbdo=4096 isw=-1, errno=22 error in CFSEEK: Invalid argument 3 stat=-1 3 write(): res=4096, errno=0 Produced output file shows, that lseek() really does nothing when failed. That is incorrect. If the binary you compile doesn't run under FreeBSD/i386 either, then it is obviously _not_ a compat32 bug since FreeBSD/i386 doesn't have compat32. You are probably having problems because all your headers are amd64 headers so you end up with various types being 64-bit that should be 32-bit and incorrect structure sizes, etc. This is probably causing the corruption issues you are seeing. You can compile your apps either on a 32-bit box or create a 32-bit chroot on your 64-bit box (just be sure to copy an i386 ld-elf.so.1 to ld-elf32.so.1 in your chroot). -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 19 20:20:03 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 49B4016A4DA for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 20:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4E9C813C455 for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 20:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m0JKK3Nu050818 for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 20:20:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m0JKK3wg050817; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 20:20:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 20:20:03 GMT Message-Id: <200801192020.m0JKK3wg050817@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org From: "Scot Hetzel" Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/119771: troubles w/ -m32 executables on both amd64 and i386 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Scot Hetzel List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 20:20:03 -0000 The following reply was made to PR amd64/119771; it has been noted by GNATS. The includes are not the same between amd64 and i386. sys/types.h pulls in machine/endian.h and machine/_types.h. These two includes are different. That is why you would need to build the includes for i386 under amd64. An example of building the includes is in stage 5.1 of buildworld. > Unfortunately, I can't port my program (that is cernlib) to 64-bit > (I try !), because one intensively uses int (and integer*4 :) to store > pointers, so I need to compile it in 32-bit environment - if possible, > on FreeBSD/amd64, if not - I should choose to continue using the > FreeBSD/i386 on 64-bit CPU :( You would need to create a 32-bit build environment similar to how buildworld stage 5.1 build the 32-bit libraries, or install FreeBSD/i386 into its own partition/directory and build it from there. 1. Create directory to install FreeBSD/i386 into: mkdir /usr/home/build32 2. Mount FreeBSD/i386 disc1 iso mount -t cd9660 /dev/cd0 /mnt or mount -t cd9660 /dev/`mdconfig -f 6.3-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso` /mnt 3. Install FreeBSD/i386 into /usr/home/build32 cd /mnt/6.3-RELEASE/base DESTDIR=/usr/home/build32 install.sh 4. link ld-elf.so.1 to ld-elf32.so.1 cd /usr/home/build32/libexec ln -s ld-elf.so.1 ld-elf32.so.1 cd ../usr/libexec ln -s ld-elf.so.1 ld-elf32.so.1 Now place your source some where under /usr/home/build32, then chroot /usr/home/build32. Change to the location of your sources and build your binary.
