I set up something similar to advisories.sgml to make an errata.html for this testing. In doing the following, the resulting errata.html.inc has the SA advisories, and not the EN notices. I've tried so many combinations, and I am convinced that something is broken at this point. I think this looks fairly good, but I hacked on it some to adjust some wording I thought was awkward. I also used .Fa instead of .Pa for macro arguments and expanded the text to note things like the sorting order and to add more detail on when these functions are executed (and when they aren't). I also picked an MI example (and one that doesn't use the bad form of SI_SUB_FOO - 1). .\" Copyright (c) 2003 Hiten M. This is similar to init and fini routines with the addition of explicit ordering metadata. It allows runtime ordering of subsystem initialization in the kernel as well as kernel modules (KLDs). .Pp The .Fn SYSINIT macro creates a .Vt struct sysinit and stores it in a startup linker set. The .Vt struct sysinit type as well as the subsystem identifier constants .Pq Dv SI_SUB_* and initialization ordering constants .Pq Dv SI_ORDER_* are defined in .In sys/kernel.h : .Bd -literal struct sysinit { enum sysinit_sub_id subsystem; /* subsystem identifier*/ enum sysinit_elem_order order; /* init order within subsystem*/ sysinit_cfunc_t func; /* function */ const void *udata; /* multiplexer/argument */ }; .Ed .Pp The .Fn SYSINIT macro takes a .Fa uniquifier argument to identify the particular function dispatch data, the .Fa subsystem type of startup interface, the subsystem element .Fa order of initialization within the subsystem, the .Fa func function to call, and the data specified in .Fa ident argument to pass the function. .Pp The .Fn SYSUNINIT macro behaves similarly to the .Fn SYSINIT macro except that it adds the data to a shutdown linker set. .Pp The startup linker set for the kernel is scanned during boot to build a sorted list of initialization routines. The initialization routines are then executed in the sorted order. The .Fa subsystem is used as the primary key and is sorted in ascending order. The .Fa order is used as the secondary key and is sorted in ascending order. The relative order of two routines that have the same .Fa subsystem and .Fa order is undefined. .Pp The startup linker sets for modules that are loaded together with the kernel by the boot loader are scanned during the .Dv SI_SUB_KLD subsystem initialization. These modules' initialization routines are sorted and merged into the kernel's list of startup routines and are executed during boot along with the kernel's initialization routines. I agree, but given that it is a bit idiomatic and confusing, it might be best to reword the sentence. I would say s/take on board/tackle/, but I'm not sure 'tackle' is any less confusing. I do find the current wording a bit awkard, but 'take on board' is a bit 'stronger' than simply 'understand' as it implies that the task requires some work (e.g. taking on a new task at a job). Maybe 'embrace' would work. Also, the comma after 'explore' is bogus. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 2 14:54:14 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4BC2A1065694; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 14:54:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ale@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 210E28FC14; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 14:54:14 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oB2EsExQ001771; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 14:54:14 GMT (envelope-from ale@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from ale@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oB2EsDAn001767; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 14:54:14 GMT (envelope-from ale) Date: Thu, 2 Dec 2010 14:54:14 GMT Message-Id: <201012021454.oB2EsDAn001767@freefall.freebsd.org> To: frtzkatz@yahoo.com, ale@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org From: ale@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/127253: Error in Handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/developers-handbook/kerneldebug-ddd.html X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 02 Dec 2010 14:54:14 -0000 Synopsis: Error in Handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/developers-handbook/kerneldebug-ddd.html State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: ale State-Changed-When: Thu Dec 2 14:53:56 UTC 2010 State-Changed-Why: Fixed, thanks! http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=127253 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 2 15:00:24 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F03CD1065694 for ; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 15:00:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C4AD88FC17 for ; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 15:00:24 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oB2F0OdF002907 for ; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 15:00:24 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oB2F0OGr002890; Thu, 2 Dec 2010 15:00:24 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Thu, 2 Dec 2010 15:00:24 GMT Message-Id: <201012021500.oB2F0OGr002890@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org From: dfilter@FreeBSD.ORG (dfilter service) Cc: Subject: Re: docs/127253: commit references a PR X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: dfilter service List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 02 Dec 2010 15:00:25 -0000 The following reply was made to PR docs/127253; it has been noted by GNATS. For one the meaning of "take on" and "take on board" are very different. These would be defined in en_UK as: take on - To over come an issue - http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/take_on take on board - To learn about the topic being discussed. - http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/take_on_board > This is how I would re-word it: > > "Working through this section requires little more than a desire to > explore, > and ability to take on new concepts as they are introduced." > If we are going to complete the disambiguation of this I would use: "Working through this section requires no more than a desire to explore new things, and the ability to take on new concepts as they are introduced."
