One can set it manually by putting: Option "reference_clock" "28.636 MHz" into the respective 'Device' section of xorg.conf. A value used by some other chips is 29.5 MHz. If that doesn't make a difference you probably should try a newer version of the driver by manually updating the port. Use that. You need to set the video output device and then the resolution. Check devices with obdiag and choose test-all. Exit then > setenv ouput-device /path to card then setenv ouput-device screen:rWxHxfrequency. After this, you'll get an xorg.conf and you can check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for whatever frequencies are scanned. Your next problem will be keeping Xorg from loading unnecessary modules. I don't know a way around that yet. I also set Options "AllowEmptyInput" "Off" so it wouldn't disable devices. Now, there is no output to the monitor, just a blank screen. Rates are set to manufacturer's descriptions. In theory, the screen should be active; but, in reality a lot of modules load with no result. 1) Do I need to disable the framebuffer in xorg.conf or by sysctl? 2) I see the refresh rates, modes, and etc in the logfile. Do I copy these values to xorg.conf? 3) Do I need to run -v 9 when running X -config *new? I use that command from the /root with xorg.conf.new. After having failed with powerdns-recursor (doesn't even compile) I tried unbound from /usr/ports/dns/unbound. That one compiles, but it dies with the following error: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/unbound onestart Starting unbound. __sparc_utrap: fatal illegal instruction __sparc_utrap: fatal illegal instruction Bus error (core dumped) /var/log/messages contains: pid 36192 (unbound), uid 0: exited on signal 10 (core dumped) The error message seems to come from lib/libc/sparc64/sys/ __sparc_utrap.c. The main question is whether this is more of a FreeBSD/sparc64 issue or whether that's a software problem. If it is a FreeBSD/sparc64 problem: what should I try? The error kind of suggests that the binary contains illegal instructions, which would be a compiler issue but I can't tell. Any hints? Rates are set > to manufacturer's descriptions. As I said before and as is also suggested in your Xorg.0.log you need to set reference_clock, IIRC for an Rage XL you'll need: Option "reference_clock" "28.636 MHz" in the "Device" section of xorg.conf, but it also might be 29.5 MHz. > In theory, the screen should be active; but, in reality a lot of modules > load with no result. This shouldn't matter; you'll see similar things on f.e. amd64/i386 when drm(4) isn't available etc. > 1) Do I need to disable the framebuffer in xorg.conf or by sysctl? I don't get what you are trying to ask here. > 2) I see the refresh rates, modes, and etc in the logfile. Do I copy these > values to xorg.conf? I'm not sure what you are asking for here; what you should do once output basically works is to add modelines for the resolutions you're using according to the specification of CRT in order to get maximum refresh rates. There's nothing sparc64-specific here, just follow one of the usual guides/modline calculators. > 3) Do I need to run -v 9 when running X -config *new? I use that command > from the /root with xorg.conf.new. I don't know what the former switch is supposed to do and I can't find it in the manual page I've installed here. My guess would be the intention is to use VT 9, which already should be the default though. Actually, such bugs are more likely to hit than compiler or OS bugs. I'd suggest to build unbound with debugging symbols and to obtain a backtrace in order to get an idea what the actual problem could be. Marius
