What does 'tick tock' mean? "Tick, tock" is used to describe the looping sound that a conventional, mechanical clock makes. Simply saying "tick, tock" is used to suggest that "time is passing, and something should happen, preferrably soon", or even "time is running out, and you are yet to do something, so hurry up". Concretely, I am impatiently waiting for answers to my questions. Wait! I gather that "" (the empty string, aka. nothing or neither) is the answer to all 4 questions. That is: - What has so far been gained through the use of GA? -- Nothing. - Of these, which ones could not have been achieved otherwise, such as with a different tool? -- Neither. - Also of these, which ones are significant, and why? -- Neither. - What warrants the continued application of GA? -- Nothing. Do I gather correctly? The Foundation has granted permission to use the logo and Deb and I discussed an agreeable attribution text that would fit within the confines of the template. Due to the limitations of blogger and my even more limited design skills, it is using a very simple template and clean design. Anyone in the project who has a CFT or would like to bring attention to interesting commits, features, Handbook changes, requests for assistance, etc. is welcome to either request an author account or to send the list or myself the desired text for a post. This is just yet another blog that I keep an eye on for a project and blogger is good at emailing admins whenever a comment or new post is posted so I expect SPAM comments and inappropriate posts to be very limited and short-lived. I'll let it settle for a week or two in the doc teams hands before I announce it to the larger dev mailing list. Hopefully we will have several authors by that time, and if anyone is interested, another admin or two. ITPUG is organizing the seventh edition of the Italian PostgreSQL Day, a national conference aimed at promoting the PostgreSQL database engine. During the past events we had speakers from all over the world, and therefore the conference usually allows for the double language italian-english. While I understand the conference is not strictly related to the FreeBSD world, I kindly ask you to evaluate if the following announce can be inserted in the FreeBSD events page. Please note that conference is not for free, and attendees will have to pay a ticket to access the event. I've already placed a post in the forums with some details about the international call for papers (see http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=40590) and therefore it is fine if you decide to not include the event in the FreeBSD events page. Please take into account also that there are other PGDays around the world, and I don't see them listed in the events page, so evaluate also if you want to "open" the events page to this kind of conferences or not. In the case you decide the event is worth to be inserted in the events page, please find below the event description. Do not esitate to contact me for any doubt. Thanks for you time. Regards, Luca ======================== PGDay.IT 2013 - Italian PostgreSQL Day The Italian PostgreSQL Users Group [ITPUG](http://www.itpug.org) presents the seventh edition of the [Italian PGDay](http://2013.pgday.it). The Italian PGDay is a well known event and represents a great opportunity for attendees to get in touch with the PostgreSQL community members and developers. The conference accepts both italian and english speakers; please see the [International Call For Papers](http://2013.pgday.it/index.php/programma/call-for-papers-english/). The conference will hold two parallel sessions allowing for tutorial, regular talks and ligthining talks; moreover during the event there will be interactive sessions. As usual, social events will be organized before and after the conference. For more info please see the [PGDay.IT 2013](http://2013.pgday.it) web site. ======================== From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 4 16:31:04 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BCB5DE90 for ; Thu, 4 Jul 2013 16:31:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from khazar@gmx.us) Received: from mout.gmx.net (mout.gmx.net [74.208.4.201]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 86AB91FFE for ; Thu, 4 Jul 2013 16:31:04 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mailout-us.gmx.com ([172.19.198.46]) by mrigmx.server.lan (mrigmxus001) with ESMTP (Nemesis) id 0Ljqgv-1UNNUF3U8v-00bq9f for ; Thu, 04 Jul 2013 18:30:54 +0200 Received: (qmail 25328 invoked by uid 0); 4 Jul 2013 16:30:54 -0000 Received: from 166.70.207.2 by rms-us024 with HTTP Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Date: Thu, 04 Jul 2013 12:30:50 -0400 Face: iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAADAAAAAwAQMAAABtzGvEAAAAAXNSR0IArs4c6QAAAAZQTFRFtpi4 AAAAUERDAwAAAAF0Uk5TAEDm2GYAAAABYktHRACIBR1IAAAACXBIWXMAAA3XAAAN1wFCKJt4AAAA B3RJTUUH3AYXDToY1bs5DgAAAN5JREFUGNNjYCAGGECoGjAp/x9KPYBQf0CUzP9/QJLxR/0PEPXb /z5I8OD1+2A1X/cD1TAzpM8HqmH/kBYPFJT/YcQClLH/Lw0xZGbDBwaG+v/3G/4CqRMSNv8bGGos ///7f4BB+vH+59EKDIzzew83AI2u/zCH8QMDc139p8cfGJg+8EnfBPI+MB5veMLA/IdRiUGNgfGZ 4MQPbAyMD3/xJQA1HPj/cAqQOvz/Rz2Qen7/h/0BBsYHDDbyQFd8YBDhB1oPdDPbDAYGkEfsGBjq gBQf0BVgXzJCfEk0AADmBlPuoZRzIAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg== From: "Genghis Khan" Message-ID: <20130704163052.270270@gmx.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 References: <51AF2DE4.3090103@gmx.com> <51CEEE8E.8010800@gmx.com> RMID: #imap/GKH/INBOX 25425 51CEEE8E.8010800@gmx.com S: genghiskhan@gmx.ca SCF: #imap/GKH/Sent Subject: Re: "injunction" on the use of GA To: dt71@gmx.com X-Claws-Account-Id: 5 X-Claws-Auto-Indent: 1 X-Claws-Auto-Wrapping: 1 X-Claws-Encrypt: 1 X-Claws-End-Special-Headers: 1 X-Claws-Manual-Headers: X-Claws-Privacy-System: pgpmime X-Claws-Sign: 0 X-Flags: 0001 X-Mailer: GMX.com Web Mailer x-registered: 0 X-GMX-UID: a8ancfcI3zOlOY2ciHIhWpd+IGRvb4Dq Cc: webmaster@freebsd.org, freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, freebsd-chat@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 04 Jul 2013 16:31:04 -0000 On Sat, 29 Jun 2013 16:26:22 +0200 dt71@gmx.com wrote: > Tick, tock. > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-chat@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-chat > To unsubscribe, send any mail to > "freebsd-chat-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" Opt out of PRISM http://prism-break.org/ I do not trust Eff, but they do have legitimate information, sometimes. I agree there is more updating working to be done here. Couple of notes: 1. This gets rid of references to a removed port and likely also stops people from jumping through hoops and coming asking for the patchsets for it. I think that alone is good enough to get this committed in its present state. 2. The OpenJDK6 port may continue to be maintained by the community in terms of security patches even though Oracle has EOL'ed JDK6. Not clear yet if that will happen, but the IcedTea people certainly have expressed some interest in doing that. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=179801 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 5 01:00:01 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@smarthost.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 932B695C for ; Fri, 5 Jul 2013 01:00:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206c::16:87]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C47317C4 for ; Fri, 5 Jul 2013 01:00:01 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.7/8.14.7) with ESMTP id r651012x007230 for ; Fri, 5 Jul 2013 01:00:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.7/8.14.7/Submit) id r65101Nl007229; Fri, 5 Jul 2013 01:00:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2013 01:00:01 GMT Message-Id: <201307050100.r65101Nl007229@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Cc: From: dfilter@FreeBSD.ORG (dfilter service) Subject: Re: docs/179801: commit references a PR X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list Reply-To: dfilter service List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 05 Jul 2013 01:00:01 -0000 The following reply was made to PR docs/179801; it has been noted by GNATS. The primary purposes are to clean up duplicated author definitions in both share/xml/authors.ent and share/xml/developers.ent, and as a added bonus simplify writing up author names/email addresses in web pages. Apart from merging developers.ent into authors.ent, removing the former, and update the Committers Guide there should be little user-visible changes: - a.portmgr renamed to a.portmgr.members - a.doceng renamed to a.doceng.members - team.re renamed to a.re.members.email and moved from share/xml/freebsd.ent to share/xml/authors.ent - a.core updated and moved from share/xml/mailing-lists.ent to share/xml/teams.ent - share/pgpkeys/{addkey.sh|README} updated Translations are untouched except for build fixes. The Turkish website is broken both here and in head. To test, you can either check out doc/projects/entities or doc/head and apply the patch at [1]. After that, run 'make' in en_US.ISO8859-1/ or 'make WEB_ONLY=yes ENGLISH_ONLY=yes' in en_US.ISO8859-1/htdocs/ as usual. I'm hoping someone will sanity check the following as a reasonable course of action, as I really don't want to mess anything up. I'm reading: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/problem-reports/index.html The problem is the man page for renice. Has anyone tried it as the root user in a jail? You can increase the nice value of any process within the jail you like, but you can't decrease it. In other words it behaves as though you were a standard user except you can change other users' processes too. This all seems reasonable as you don't want the root user in their jailed machine pinching CPU time from everyone else. It's probably documented somewhere, but I've only found an old discussion about allowing jailed users to renice anything. It's certinaly not in the first place I'd look - the man page. So, what I've done: I've searched for "renice" in http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?query and not found it listed. I've Googled for things like "renice in jail" I've checked out the behaviour out on running systems I have available to me. I'm about to fill out this form here: http://www.freebsd.org/send-pr.html Should I do anything else first? Thanks, Frank. These parts shouldn't be changed or at least not with other changes if you want to improve them. Also, the real changes seem to be a bit messy, there are duplicated entries and some commented out ones and all of this intermixed with indentation changes so it is hard to see the overall effect. This file should be reviewed. As for the email element, it doesn't logically belong to HTML so it shouldn't have the XHTML namespace. Actually, it is borrowed from DocBook, which doesn't have a namespace up to version 4.5. In turn, DocBook 5.0 has its own namespace. So I suggest to leave the email element in the empty namespace for now and with the DB 5.0 migration it will go to the DocBook namespace. For this, you also need to modify share/xml/xhtml.xsl and remove the namespace prefix in the match attribute: + <xsl:template match="xhtml:email"> + <xsl:text><</xsl:text> + <xsl:choose> + <xsl:when test="@role='nolink'"> + <xsl:apply-templates /> + </xsl:when> + <xsl:otherwise> + <a> + <xsl:attribute name="href"> + <xsl:text>mailto:</xsl:text> + <xsl:value-of select="." /> + </xsl:attribute> + <xsl:apply-templates /> + </a> + </xsl:otherwise> + </xsl:choose> + <xsl:text>></xsl:text> + </xsl:template> And with this change, this part becomes redundant: --- share/xsl/freebsd-xhtml-common.xsl (svn+ssh://svn.freebsd.org/doc/projects/entities) (working copy) +++ svn+ssh://svn.freebsd.org/doc/projects/entities (revision 42173) @@ -6,6 +6,7 @@ version='1.0' xmlns="http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/transitional" xmlns:str="http://exslt.org/strings" + xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" extension-element-prefixes="str" exclude-result-prefixes="#default"> @@ -162,6 +163,27 @@ <xsl:call-template name="svnref.genlink"/> </xsl:template> + <xsl:template match="xhtml:email"> + <code class="email"> + <xsl:text><</xsl:text> + <xsl:choose> + <xsl:when test="@role='nolink'"> + <xsl:apply-templates /> + </xsl:when> + <xsl:otherwise> + <a class="email"> + <xsl:attribute name="href"> + <xsl:text>mailto:</xsl:text> + <xsl:value-of select="."/> + </xsl:attribute> + <xsl:apply-templates /> + </a> + </xsl:otherwise> + </xsl:choose> + <xsl:text>></xsl:text> + </code> + </xsl:template> The rest looks fine, thanks for your work on this! Is there a page or *really simple* guide to doing it, that assumes nothing? As to the changes, I'd go from: Users other than the super-user may only alter the priority of processes they own, and can only monotonically increase their ``nice value'' within the range 0 to PRIO_MAX (20). (This prevents overriding administrative fiats.) The super-user may alter the priority of any process and set the priority to any value in the range PRIO_MIN (-20) to PRIO_MAX. Useful priorities are: 20 (the affected processes will run only when nothing else in the system wants to), 0 (the ``base'' scheduling priority), any- thing negative (to make things go very fast). to Users other than the super-user may only alter the priority of processes they own, and can only monotonically increase their ``nice value'' within the range 0 to PRIO_MAX (20). Why is this referring to "super-user", and not "root". I prefer root, but if there's a style-guide that says call root "super-user" then fair enough. Yes, you could call root something different if you wanted to mess with things but I'd guess anyone knowing enough to do that would be above being confused by the documentation. Regards, Frank. Assuming the source in is /usr/src: cd /usr/src/usr.bin/renice cp renice.8 renice.8.orig Edit the new version as desired. When done, cd /usr/src diff -u usr.bin/renice/renice.8.orig usr.bin/renice/renice.8 > ~/renice.diff This is a bit easier if you use Subversion to check out the source. > I'm tempted to re-write the whole lot, but I'm successfully resisting. The use of asides, "the affected processes will run only when nothing else in the system wants to", and "administrative fiats" make me twitchy. It seems more complicated than necessary and could stand with some clarity improvements.
