X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2016 12:16:07 -0000 Hello, I am noticing that when resuming from suspend with 11 alpha 6, the system freezes once in a while with similar symptoms on a Toshiba Satellite machine as well as a Panasonic Toughbook. Both of these machines have intel GMA950 graphics. I would assume that it is a kernel panic but I am not quite sure because I am totally blind. I do know that I can no longer use my power button to shut down the machine and also that I can no longer log in on another TTY because I have a pc speaker beep set up to sound for after I log in. I would file a bug report about this but I think if someone else was able to reproduce the bug, they may be able to gather more information. For example, I don't even know if the screen works after login and starting X or if it returns to normal operation when resuming from suspend the times it does work since I can't see it. Accessibility services within Gnome don't use video hooking as is commonly done in other operating systems so even if the screen was totally corrupted, things would work fine for me with my screen reader and I would have no idea. Sometimes when it does resume correctly, I get errors from witness and drm in the output of dmesg. I often use xrandr to disable the monitors since these are laptops and I can get better battery life this way. I have noticed that when the lcd panels are disabled, I don't have issues with freezing after resume, however, I still get errors printed to the terminal about DRM. I would be happy to provide any info that would be helpful in a bug report, however, I need to be able to gather it from within a desktop environment because that is where my screen readers work. Thanks. I then integrated the ~800 commits to drm / i915 / radeon / amdgpu , testing periodically along the way and updating the linuxkpi as needed. I've just tagged the drm-next branch with drm-4.7-rc1 to indicate that it is in sync with 4.7-rc1 upstream. If any of you are feeling adventurous I would appreciate it if you would try it and report any regressions with respect to drm-next-4.6. I'm aware that there are a number of issues with drm-next-4.6 so I'm only really interested in _new_ issues. If you're feeling really adventurous - run the piglit test suite from the ports' xserver-next branch and do a root cause analysis on test failures. As always the repo is at: https://github.com/FreeBSDDesktop/freebsd-base-graphics Look through the existing open issues before filing a report and check the wiki first to address any problems. I was trying to use FreeBSD when I realized that the graphic support is limited. I am interested on actively contributing to the development (although unfortunately, so far my knowledge is limited). After cloning freebsd-base-graphcis (branch drm-next-4.6), I can finally load the device driver and run Xorg. However, there are some problems: - The response time becomes really slow. - Typing a simple command in the console can take 20 seconds. - The mouse is also moving slow - Executing a simple startx implies a reset because it slowdown the system - Even a simple xclock is a problem I was trying to identify where is the issue and my plan was using dtrace. Right now I can use it to collect kernel stack traces, but instead of the name of function, the output is only showing the addresses. My question is: do I need to compile the kernel with some special flags to support symbols in dtrace ? A secondary question : do you recommend another profiler (or tool) to debug this kind of problem ? Some basic information: I am using the generic configuration and I updated a bunch of ports using freebsd-ports-graphics. - Inti From owner-freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Fri Aug 12 21:25:16 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B0A0ABB885E for ; Fri, 12 Aug 2016 21:25:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (unknown [127.0.1.3]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9A9CC118C for ; Fri, 12 Aug 2016 21:25:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 9A013BB885D; Fri, 12 Aug 2016 21:25:16 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99B47BB885C for ; Fri, 12 Aug 2016 21:25:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 89527118A for ; Fri, 12 Aug 2016 21:25:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u7CLPG2a070184 for ; Fri, 12 Aug 2016 21:25:16 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: x11@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 211797] x11-fonts/xfs: add CPE information Date: Fri, 12 Aug 2016 21:25:16 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: new X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Ports & Packages X-Bugzilla-Component: Individual Port(s) X-Bugzilla-Version: Latest X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: shun.fbsd.pr@dropcut.net X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: x11@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: maintainer-feedback? The first thing I would look at is your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. From the sound of it you may be using a VESA graphics driver in Xorg. If you *are* running the VESA driver you can update the devices section of xorg.conf to contain the following: Driver "intel" This assumes you have installed the xf86-video-intel-2.99 driver pkg. here is an example of Xorg successfully loading the intel driver on my SkyLake system (taken from Xorg.0.log): [ 8508.514] (II) LoadModule: "intel" [ 8508.514] (II) Loading /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so [ 8508.515] (II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation" [ 8508.515] compiled for 1.18.3, module version = 2.99.917 [ 8508.515] Module class: X.Org Video Driver [ 8508.515] ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 20.0 [ 8508.515] (II) intel: Driver for Intel(R) Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810, i810-dc100, i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 854, 852GM/855GM, 865G, 915G, E7221 (i915), 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 945GME, Pineview GM, Pineview G, 965G, G35, 965Q, 946GZ, 965GM, 965GME/GLE, G33, Q35, Q33, GM45, 4 Series, G45/G43, Q45/Q43, G41, B43 [ 8508.516] (II) intel: Driver for Intel(R) HD Graphics: 2000-6000 [ 8508.516] (II) intel: Driver for Intel(R) Iris(TM) Graphics: 5100, 6100 [ 8508.516] (II) intel: Driver for Intel(R) Iris(TM) Pro Graphics: 5200, 6200, P6300 [ 8508.516] (--) Using syscons driver with X support (version 2.0) [ 8508.516] (--) using VT number 9 [ 8508.516] (II) intel(0): Using Kernel Mode Setting driver: i915, version 1.6.0 20160229 hope this helps! -pete From owner-freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Sat Aug 13 05:17:29 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B07EBBB89AE for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 05:17:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99C401D60 for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 05:17:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 95735BB89A9; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 05:17:29 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 951D0BB89A8 for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 05:17:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 8487E1D5F for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 05:17:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u7D5HSle095546 for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 05:17:29 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: x11@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 211797] x11-fonts/xfs: Add CPE information Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2016 05:17:28 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Ports & Packages X-Bugzilla-Component: Individual Port(s) X-Bugzilla-Version: Latest X-Bugzilla-Keywords: easy, security X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: koobs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: ports-secteam@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: maintainer-feedback? I am currently having to use the vesa driver because radeon does not work correctly with the chipset. (On Linux, it does, but not on FreeBSD). Is there any chance we could see support for my chipset in an upcoming release ? In case it is needed, my system is FreeBSD 10.3 amd64 with AMD A6-6400K (Richland) processor paired with Asus A68HM (FM2 socket) motherboard. > Preach it*LOUD*, brother !!!! There are a whole family of AMD APU's > (Jaguar, Richland, Kabini, Kaveri etc.) which are apparently rather > widely used in laptops & some tablets & other low power machines, & > (*VERY*) sadly unsupported in FreeBSD :-( .... > > -- William A. Mahaffey III This is most unfortunate. I had purchased the motherboard and processor=20 hoping to move to FreeBSD as the only OS. It turns out that FreeBSD is=20 the only OS which does not work with Radeon HD 8470D graphics. Windows=20 does, Linux does, but FreeBSD does not. Between running FreeBSD with the=20 vesa driver (which does not let me play videos smoothly) and the=20 alternatives, I find it much better to run my hardware on Windows XP for=20 the time being, despite the fact that 1) MS does not support XP; 2) this=20 beats the purpose of my hardware upgrade. One thing that baffles about FreeBSD is not that FreeBSD is picky about=20 the hardware supported, but there is no way to determine in advance=20 whether certain hardware will work on not. It should not be difficult to=20 put up a web page which lists hardware compatibility ratings for the=20 most popular hardware available online. Since things like CPU, disk=20 drives, memory modules, monitor, keyboard and mouse always work, as a=20 desktop user, I only need hardware compatibility scores for graphics=20 adapter, sound card, ethernet adapter, printer/scanner. If I could=20 easily see which currently available adapter/card/printer is supported,=20 it makes life easier for everyone - for me buying the hardware, for=20 FreeBSD users looking to support the OS and the hardware it runs on.=20 This also becomes a strong incentive to hardware manufacturers to ensure=20 that their hardware works on FreeBSD; because it would be flashing news=20 if their competitor's hardware works while theirs doesn't. When purchasing hardware, I have a couple of times tried to enquire from=20 freebsd mailing lists whether certain hardware will work or not. Nobody=20 replies. It seems a mantra in the freebsd community - "We do not comment=20 on hardware compatibility upfront". It would, in my humble opinion, be=20 better to go in the opposite direction - if an online portal and a=20 dedicated mailing list could actually discuss hardware compatibility, it=20 makes things better for hardware buyers as well as FreeBSD itself. In the current situation, I have written many, many messages to various=20 mailing lists and freebsd experts detailing the problem with Radeon HD=20 8470D graphics. The only comment I have so far is the William A.=20 Mahaffey III message, which clearly says that Richland graphics don't=20 work. I am even willing to buy a new nvidia graphics card if that could=20 make my FreeBSD system workable, but there is not even a single nvidia=20 card available at Amazon/Flipkart which I can see mentioned as supported=20 on the FreeBSD Graphics web page. The only cards listed there are ages=20 old and possibly very expensive cards. Not even a single card with the=20 current bunch of 210/610/710/730 chipsets is referred on that page.=20 Isn't that strange ? --=20 Regards, Manish Jain From owner-freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Sat Aug 13 19:31:40 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EAA9ABB92AF for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 19:31:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from stoa@gmx.us) Received: from mout.gmx.net (mout.gmx.net [212.227.15.19]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mout.gmx.net", Issuer "TeleSec ServerPass DE-1" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 459A61E01 for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 19:31:39 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from stoa@gmx.us) Received: from archlinux.localdomain ([97.66.215.44]) by mail.gmx.com (mrgmx001) with ESMTPSA (Nemesis) id 0MfW5D-1brYJU3FXv-00P22K for ; Sat, 13 Aug 2016 21:31:32 +0200 Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2016 14:31:21 -0500 From: Dutch Ingraham To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Any chance for ATI Radeon 8470 HD graphics ? It should not be difficult to I responded to you four days ago when you posed this same query to a different list: https://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=233464+0+current/freebsd-questions Can you not determine from the link provided in that message whether your card is supported? Since things like CPU, disk There is a bit of this online, but it either requires users to do a _much_ better job of keeping it up to date or having the installer automatically send systems configuration info to freebsd.org. The former is not likely succeed and the latter is likely to be branded as intrusive and wouldn't even tell us how well the device works - just that it's there and there's a device driver for it. Unlike some Linux distros, FreeBSD doesn't have vendors testing it when they ship. If you can propose a robust solution, at the very least for the more full-blown PCBSD installer, I'm sure someone would be inclined to help. For the more technically minded, it isn't difficult to go in to the drivers themselves and look at the PCIID list and check out the corresponding model names. That will give you a rough idea if the driver is at least intended to supported said device. In terms of actual support, as opposed to advertised support, you run in to the issue that the most recent update to drm drivers from upstream (namely Linux) was from Linux 3.8 which was released on Monday, 18 Feb 2013 - roughly 42 months ago. If support for your hardware came out any more recently than that you're out of luck. Longer term FreeBSD will re-converge with upstream. My drm-next branch is in sync with the drm and drivers in Linux 4.7 and I'll be syncing it with 4.8-rc1. I can't yet provide this as an alternative to you because I have not had time to iron out the ttm bugs keeping radeon and amdgpu from working. Once I'm done with my Kaby Lake tester I'll start looking in to that. Cheers. -M
