This has been a long standing tradition. Mainly, because you could theoretically rescue yourself out of some bad situations by being able to compile yourself out of it, since statically linked executables won't break if e.g. libc.so or ld-elf.so is screwed up. This is also the reason that /sbin/init and /rescue/rescue are statically linked. Additionally, it could give a minor performance improvement, that is if the slowdown caused by dynamic linking is not offset by reading a larger executable. > My Raspberry Pi 3 is self-hosting with -j4 and doesn't run out of memory > if the toolchain is shared. Is there a downside to this option? I normally always use WITH_SHARED_TOOLCHAIN, and I have yet to encounter any problem with it. -Dimitry --Apple-Mail=_1FBDFFF8-E436-4ECE-B5EB-37FCEB0E86FD Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=signature.asc Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: Message signed with OpenPGP using GPGMail -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG/MacGPG2 v2.0.30 iEYEARECAAYFAlhgEaUACgkQsF6jCi4glqNo8QCdEzzB0I95lZhBuB/H8GtpaV3P u2gAnRolVXSlMDLAoZ1MO9b2wHKfOXOX =1KT8 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Apple-Mail=_1FBDFFF8-E436-4ECE-B5EB-37FCEB0E86FD-- From owner-freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org Tue Dec 27 08:37:17 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-toolchain@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A392DC9127B for ; Tue, 27 Dec 2016 08:37:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from markmi@dsl-only.net) Received: from asp.reflexion.net (outbound-mail-211-164.reflexion.net [208.70.211.164]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 3EF4F1306 for ; Tue, 27 Dec 2016 08:37:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from markmi@dsl-only.net) Received: (qmail 12398 invoked from network); 27 Dec 2016 08:38:19 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO mail-cs-01.app.dca.reflexion.local) (10.81.19.1) by 0 (rfx-qmail) with SMTP; 27 Dec 2016 08:38:19 -0000 Received: by mail-cs-01.app.dca.reflexion.local (Reflexion email security v8.20.0) with SMTP; Tue, 27 Dec 2016 03:37:23 -0500 (EST) Received: (qmail 31865 invoked from network); 27 Dec 2016 08:37:22 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO iron2.pdx.net) (69.64.224.71) by 0 (rfx-qmail) with (AES256-SHA encrypted) SMTP; 27 Dec 2016 08:37:22 -0000 Received: from [192.168.1.111] (c-67-170-167-181.hsd1.or.comcast.net [67.170.167.181]) by iron2.pdx.net (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 2D3EAEC7888; Tue, 27 Dec 2016 00:37:09 -0800 (PST) From: Mark Millard Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 10.2 \(3259\)) Subject: 6.2.0 based devel/powerpc64-gcc rejects sys/powerpc/powerpc/db_trace.c for very old code Message-Id: Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2016 00:37:08 -0800 To: FreeBSD Toolchain , FreeBSD PowerPC ML X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3259) X-BeenThere: freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: Maintenance of FreeBSD's integrated toolchain List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2016 08:37:17 -0000 I have submitted: Bug 215600 - devel/powerpc64-gcc based buildkernel: = sys/powerpc/powerpc/db_trace.c rejected for: '__builtin_frame_address' = with a nonzero argument is unsafe sys/powerpc/powerpc/db_trace.c -r132070 2004-Jul-12 is when this __builtin_frame_address use was introduced: void db_trace_self(void) { db_addr_t addr; addr =3D (db_addr_t)__builtin_frame_address(1); db_backtrace(curthread, addr, -1); } head was at -r310556 for this discovery but with a patch for libdwarf in ctfconvert to enable buildkernel to get this far. I take it something is going wrong in this second case, e.g. TOOLS_PREFIX is likely not defined, while ${MACHINE} is not "host". --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.=
