Even as a longtime FreeBSD user (since 5.x) it sometimes confuses the heck = out of me what you need to get some graphics functionality working! If xf86-video-ati-18.1 requires drm-kmod, shouldn't it depend on it? Or if that is not possible because some graphics cards might not need it, at least a pkg-message like "Depending on your hardware, this driver might *require* the drm-kmod port." I saw the message in UPDATING, but to me "It is recommended" !=3D "your har= dware might not work correctly without it". --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Wed Oct 3 20:53:07 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1FFDE10AD464 for ; This problem has existed forever.  I am not sure it is actually a fault in Linux emulation, as these very same symptoms ("failed to retrieve device information" message, console freeze) existed back in FreeBSDDesktop/freebsd-base-graphics days when attempting to run purely FreeBSD OpenGL apps.  At the time the workaround was a patch to Mesa's GPU detection; the underlying kernel problem wasn't addressed. Where would I begin to investigate the problem, in order to fix it and/or to decide who's bug it is?  Unless there is something simpler to try, I may have to dig up those old Mesa patches and see whether a non-Linux binary can be made to trigger the same symptom. By design, is it considered acceptable that any member of the "video" group has permission to destroy functionality of the graphics subsystem?  Is this a bug in the general case, or an accepted technical limitation? So I myself will be only happy having evdev enabled, but because FreeBSD used in many more non-evdev related applications extra care should be taken in order not to break things for all these fleets of FreeBSD servers... There is definitely a regression with xf86-video-ati when using the legacy = drm driver from base. We're currently investigating this and will try to find a way to solve it. If you are on amd64 you can try to use graphics/drm-kmod (this will install either drm-stable-kmod or drm-next-kmod depending on your FreeBSD version), or install either of drm-stable or drm-next directly. If you are on 12 you can also try drm-devel-kmod. With regards to 10.x support, that branch is end of life at October 31, so I suggest you try to update to either 11.2 or the upcoming 12.0. The legacy drm (drm1 and drm2) modules are still in base, the decision to remove them was reverted. They are also available as a port, graphics/drm-legacy-kmod, which works on a very recent 12. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Sat Oct 6 12:38:12 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4997010B8CFE for ; Sat, 6 Oct 2018 12:38:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from greg@unrelenting.technology) Received: from out.migadu.com (out.migadu.com [91.121.223.63]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.migadu.com", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 94D1C732EF for ; Sat, 6 Oct 2018 12:38:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from greg@unrelenting.technology) Received: (Migadu outbound); Sat, 06 Oct 2018 12:38:04 +0000 Authentication-Results: out.migadu.com; auth=pass (plain) Received: from [192.168.1.141] ([62.122.208.146]) by out.migadu.com (Haraka/2.8.16) with ESMTPSA id 4DBA20CE-F3FF-4192-BC0D-BC79FBB68E39.1 envelope-from (authenticated bits=0) (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 verify=FAIL); Sat, 06 Oct 2018 12:38:03 +0000 Date: Sat, 06 Oct 2018 15:38:00 +0300 From: Greg V Subject: Re: linux-c7 and opengl apps?
