FreeBSD 12.2 is due out in October and version 13.0 only five months later. Therefore, I am. I am just inquiring to see if any progress had been made regarding bug: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D237666 This bug affects both the 12.x and 13.x branches of FreeBSD. Fortunately, it does not affect <=3D 11.x branches. FreeBSD 12.2 is due out in October and version 13.0 only five months later. At present, this bug infects both the 12.x and 13.x branches making updating systems beyond 11.x impossible for users of the afflicted systems. The fact that this bug has gone unremedied for so long is somewhat disheartening. --=20 Gerard --Sig_/sVS/T4RpqCNDqH5xId_f/Ye Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQEzBAEBCAAdFiEEIQb/tTwl6I1ueEVtOHMGOIfexWQFAl8poKgACgkQOHMGOIfe xWR9KggAvSwULzwOh2oNK4lSNJOJaGZmBXFVwtL+14cWbWYvgUAPPQnVZAnBQu0V 799s79GeP1K5qTZrHQCJuecQY8y10KZV1pdifn2KCqsKUxyykUKGLoxp+QKMu2CJ hwYiRYQ6rD5Yy381pQsRd3Ke7VIhSISYhbs1mSmz8ckN2f9/aq9IQyiEdOCQD3mR W/5g5qJI8c9prhSBsHgfLfMkow2us9enbtEU1bu8z22EOHcAeNFoXnhpYgUFxJgY a7pSZxCjj12J2w83TZRhcyADzaI/ukPK0E1xktP4uXaCQ0AhOB64bCnbCoRvJa53 grPQCmCMegDOZbprNnc0DJsgGtNhbg== =s0ot -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Sig_/sVS/T4RpqCNDqH5xId_f/Ye-- From owner-freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Fri Aug 7 13:09:06 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 74C3D3BA688 for ; Fri, 7 Aug 2020 13:09:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from peter.blok@bsd4all.org) Received: from smtpq5.tb.mail.iss.as9143.net (smtpq5.tb.mail.iss.as9143.net [212.54.42.168]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4BNQfn4kVvz4PcL for ; Fri, 7 Aug 2020 13:09:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from peter.blok@bsd4all.org) Received: from [212.54.42.134] (helo=smtp10.tb.mail.iss.as9143.net) by smtpq5.tb.mail.iss.as9143.net with esmtps (TLS1.2:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.90_1) (envelope-from ) id 1k427L-0006h0-2y for freebsd-stable@freebsd.org; Fri, 07 Aug 2020 15:09:03 +0200 Received: from 94-209-85-88.cable.dynamic.v4.ziggo.nl ([94.209.85.88] helo=wan0.bsd4all.org) by smtp10.tb.mail.iss.as9143.net with esmtp (Exim 4.90_1) (envelope-from ) id 1k427K-0004RK-Ut for freebsd-stable@freebsd.org; Fri, 07 Aug 2020 15:09:02 +0200 Received: from newnas.bsd4all.local (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wan0.bsd4all.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8B93A28B for ; Fri, 7 Aug 2020 15:09:01 +0200 (CEST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at bsd4all.org Received: from wan0.bsd4all.org ([127.0.0.1]) by newnas.bsd4all.local (newnas.bsd4all.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 5MvmvxmiCu2w for ; Fri, 7 Aug 2020 15:09:01 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [192.168.1.65] (unknown [192.168.1.65]) by wan0.bsd4all.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 16E39112 for ; Fri, 7 Aug 2020 15:09:00 +0200 (CEST) From: peter.blok@bsd4all.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 13.4 \(3608.120.23.2.1\)) Subject: Commit 364003 causes immediate restart Message-Id: Date: Fri, 7 Aug 2020 15:09:00 +0200 To: FreeBSD Stable X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3608.120.23.2.1) X-SourceIP: 94.209.85.88 X-Ziggo-spambar: / X-Ziggo-spamscore: 0.0 X-Ziggo-spamreport: CMAE Analysis: v=2.4 cv=ItSgzJzg c=1 sm=1 tr=0 ts=5f2d526e a=LYXyOGYQqFYBMgK+Y6iqTg==:17 a=kj9zAlcOel0A:10 a=y4yBn9ojGxQA:10 a=G7ypszhyT7mhwc0a96oA:9 a=CjuIK1q_8ugA:10 X-Ziggo-Spam-Status: No X-Spam-Status: No X-Spam-Flag: No X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4BNQfn4kVvz4PcL X-Spamd-Bar: -- Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=none; dmarc=none; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of peter.blok@bsd4all.org designates 212.54.42.168 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=peter.blok@bsd4all.org X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-2.23 / 15.00]; RCVD_VIA_SMTP_AUTH(0.00)[]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_FIVE(0.00)[6]; RWL_MAILSPIKE_POSSIBLE(0.00)[212.54.42.168:from]; MV_CASE(0.50)[]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; PREVIOUSLY_DELIVERED(0.00)[freebsd-stable@freebsd.org]; DMARC_NA(0.00)[bsd4all.org]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-0.99)[-0.992]; RECEIVED_SPAMHAUS_PBL(0.00)[94.209.85.88:received]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.02)[-1.019]; TO_DN_ALL(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-0.32)[-0.320]; FROM_NO_DN(0.00)[]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+a:smtp.ziggo.nl/16]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_NA(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; ASN(0.00)[asn:33915, ipnet:212.54.32.0/20, country:NL]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_LOW(-0.10)[212.54.42.168:from] X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.33 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 07 Aug 2020 13:09:06 -0000 Hi, After commit 364003 STABLE-12 reboots almost immediately. I believe that is somewhat expected because there may be changes to the KPI in STABLE that have not been merged to a RELEASE branch yet.  So since the packages are built against RELEASE branches you will run into issues where you need to build the DRM drivers locally for systems running both STABLE and CURRENT. I don't think this is the root cause. I am seeing the exact same issue after upgrading a Sandy Bridge machine with on-chip-GPU to a recent -STABLE. Worked perfectly fine before with the abandonware-i915kms in base as well as with drm-legacy-kmod. Now both are showing a mere black screen, just like Nils reported. Maybe the recent MFCs of linuxkpi stuff broke something. I'll build some kernels and modules and see if I find the issue. Meanwhile, if it's been discovered (and fixed) already, let me know. Now startx and i3 works fine. Yeah, I got the point, thx. I just happened to observe the same issue with the in-tree-abandonware driver. It has a number of advantages (standards compliance, speed, NLS support) over the one in previous FreeBSD releases, but in accordance with POLA it will require the option WITH_GH_BC=yes to be passed to buildworld and installworld in FreeBSD-12. With WITH_TESTS=yes a large number of tests is built and available as part of the Kyua based test framework - test results from platforms other than i386 and amd64 are welcome. The same version of bc and dc is also available as a port or package, but built with less aggressive compiler optimizations and without any test cases being installed (but they can be run with "make test" in the port directory /usr/ports/math/gh-bc).
