It works on my laptop as a sound-blaster Pro, and under MS-DOS as the
same.  Are you sure that you have the port, irq, and such correctly
configured?

Here are my lines.
controller      snd0
device sb0      at isa? port 0x220 irq 5 conflicts drq 1 vector sbintr
