This may not be the best forum for questions like this; I'd recommend maybe freebsd-hackers or one of the other more technical lists. That said... are you running any other software? You should also consider moving to a more recent version of FreeBSD; 4.6.2-RELEASE is the current latest release and has a bunch of security fixes that aren't in 4.0, and may include fixes for whatever bug is troubling your system.
